Google has revealed the extent to which world governments request controversial or contrary sites be excluded from search results, using its Transparency Record to highlight potential censorship. The newly updated section details Google’s response to complaints such as YouTube videos allegedly promoting terrorism, with takedown-requests from the US more than doubling in the July to December 2011 period from the previous six months.
Although Google complied with some of the requests, it did not accede to all. In the final tally for that six month period, the search giant agreed to act or partially-act on as many as 93-percent of complaints (for the US) or as few as zero (for Russia, Hungary a...

Verizon FiOS Quantum official: 300Mbps fiber

Verizon FiOS Quantum official: 300Mbps fiber

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon has launched its new FiOS Quantum broadband internet service, offering up to 300Mbps downloads and up to 65Mbps uploads along with digital TV and phone packages. The new service – which Verizon says could download a 5GB Full HD movie in just 2.2 minutes – doesn’t come cheap however, with plans stretching all the way to a whopping $210 per month.
That’s based on a two-year agreement for the maximum-speed FiOS Quantum service. If you’re content to “make do” with 150Mbps downloads instead of 300Mbps (and the same 65Mbps upload rate) then you can pare it down by more than 50-percent, to “just” $100 per month.
Cheaper packages offer 75/35Mbps for $90 per month, and then carry on down the ...

'Xbox Surface' tablet launch -- 7-inch tablet unveiling rumored

'Xbox Surface' tablet launch -- 7-inch tablet unveiling rumored

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Rumors and speculation have been flying since Microsoft announced last week that it was hosting a press conference in Los Angeles on Monday, and that might be exactly what the Redmond-based company was hoping for. Early well-sourced reports indicated that a Microsoft-branded tablet is on tap for the event, and a number of subsequent reports have said much of the same. TechCrunch later reported that we should expect a Barnes & Noble collaboration, but B&N squashed that rumor relatively quickly. Next up from the rumor mill? An “Xbox Surface” tablet with a 7-inch display, an ARM based TI processor, full HD 1080p-output and a 28-nanometer AMD graphics processor. An an interesting side note, Micr...

Microsoft unveils Surface line of Windows 8 tablets

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft announced Surface, a line of Windows 8 tablets tonight at the “big event” everyone’s been talking about. The two models are similar to the company’s strategy for different versions of Windows — there’s a Windows RT-based tablet for mainstream consumers and a professional tablet for users with higher-end needs.
Both tablets feature a 10.6-inch ClearType HD display. They’re designed with what Microsoft is calling VaporMg, a “combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch.” They also have built-in kickstands and a Touch Cover that folds out to expose a keyboard. In this form factor, the tablets essentially...

SPDY not much faster than HTTP after all?

SPDY not much faster than HTTP after all?

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Not as SPDY as you thought SPDY is awesome. It’s the first real upgrade to HTTP in 10+ years, it tackles high latency mobile networks performance issues and it makes the web more secure. SPDY is different than HTTP in many ways, but its primary value comes from being able to multiplex many requests/responses from client to server over a single (or few) TCP connections. Previous benchmarks tout great benefits, ranging from making pages load 2x faster to making mobile sites 23% faster using SPDY and HTTPS than over clear HTTP. However... Guypo

Google completes buyout of Magnolia Broadband patents, puts a little extra protection under its belt

Google completes buyout of Magnolia Broadband patents, puts a little extra protection under its belt

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Magnolia Broadband revealed that Google was buying some of its patents at the start of June, but to say that its confirmation was brief would be an understatement. It's being more verbose now that the transaction has been cleared: Google now owns over 50 patents for beamforming wireless signals. Magnolia characterizes the techniques as important to making the best use of cellular connections, which could well be helpful to a company that just bought Motorola. Having said this, we can't help but think that the various patent battles of Google's recent acquisition may play a part; obtaining cellular-specific patents would give potential attackers a reason to think twice.

Sony Xperia Ion hits AT&T June 24th for $99 on contract

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

In the tech industry, time (and the fleeting interests of geekdom) waits for no one product. So, it's understandable if you've already forgotten about Sony Mobile's US flagship: a sleekly designed, mid-range contender known as the Xperia Ion. It's been nearly six months since the electronics giant officially unveiled the device at CES and, for brand loyalists still clinging to the edge of their seats, the wait's nearly over. Starting June 24th, AT&T will be offering the LTE handset -- a first for the newly unified wireless outfit stateside -- for $99 with a new two-year agreement (insert applause for Nokia and its precedent setting Lumia 900 here).
So, what do you get for that compelling pri...

Anti-hacker retaliation: new policies

Anti-hacker retaliation: new policies

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

More companies are risking escalating retaliation with the hacker community by directly going after hackers who break into their systems, Reuters reports. The publication describes the new techniques as “active defense” or “strike-back” policies that use deception to either distract the target hacker with misinformation or to get the hacker to inadvertently reveal more about themselves and their machines. For example, Reuters notes that some companies create “beacons” that contain false information and are then traced back to hackers’ machines once they’re extracted.
These new, aggressive measures have proven controversial because, as security experts have told Reuters, there are “some cases ...

Anonymous hackers protest European Union, INDECT

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Notorious hacker-activist group Anonymous is back with another operation that aims to strike fear into the hearts of lawmakers in the European Union. While the operation does not involve any cyberattacks, Anonymous is attempting to rally supporters for a massive protest on July 28th. The group is protesting the EU-backed research project INDECT, which looks to develop technology that can automatically detect criminal threats by analyzing conspicuous behavior online and in real life through various surveillance measures. Opponents of the project contend that it is an invasion of privacy that collects data illegally. “We have been accepting the claims of disclosure of our private data for too ...
