If you've been itching for Sony to take your money since it announced its flagship BDP-S790 Blu-ray player, then get ready to open up that wallet. The device is now available at Sony's online store for $249.99, with an estimated ship date of April 24th. The dual-core player (yes, there's a dual-core CPU in here!) will also be available in stores on May 6th for folks who prefer schlepping their electronics the old-fashioned way. Besides 4K upscaling and 3D playback, the BDP-S790 features DLNA, Netflix, VUDU, Amazon Instant Video, Slacker, Pandora, Twitter and Facebook capabilities. Panasonic has officially priced-out its 2012 Blu-ray player lineup announced back at CES, and it includes no fewer than six boxes (and price-points) for you to choose from. Four of the new players -- ranging in price from $150 to $350 -- are capable of playing your favorite Blu-ray flicks in 3D and come with Panasonic's Viera Connect service, which provides access to online content from Amazon, Hulu and Netflix and a host of applications including Facebook, Skype and Twitter.

Sharp Launches a Blu-ray Player with MHL Input

We've seen MHL connectivity on receivers and TVs, but Sharp has packed an MHL port into its new BD-AMS20U Blu-ray player. The 20U also gives you built-in Wi-Fi, a processor that will clean up DVD and streaming video, and a front facing USB port. The AMS20U will be available in April at $199. If you can go without the MHL, the otherwise similar AMS10U will be available for $179 in March.

Sony Announces BDP-S790 Blu-ray Player Coming Soon

Sony is looking to release new Blu-ray players in April. Among the collection is the BDP-S790, which is the company’s flagship model. The main feature about this device is that it is capable of upscaling Blu-ray movies from full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution to a 4K resolution. A 4K resolution is 4 times the pixels of 1080p resolution and provides the same kind of detail that is seen in the theaters. Other major features will include Wi-Fi capabilities, the Smart TV platform, and access to the Sony Entertainment Network. Sony has not announced a retail price for the BDP-S790 at this time.

Toshiba's 2012 line of Blu-ray players will support DLNA streaming, as well as the now-standard Netflix, Vudu, and YouTube playback. The 2D and 3D players will match the design of the company's Aero LED TVs and come in Wi-Fi ready models available in April and Wi-Fi enabled versions coming in May. Pricing hasn't been announced, but we may be able to find out today on the floor at CES.

Sony just announced its 2012 line of smart Blu-ray players at CES, and the highlight is the BDP-S790, which can upscale "any content" to 4K. We're don't know exactly how that'll look, but we're guessing it'll be a lot like scaling DVD to 1080p — so probably just good enough to hold you over until true 4K content becomes more readily available. The S70 also features built-in Wi-Fi with the usual Netflix, Pandora, and Hulu support, but you can also connect an optional camera and use Skype, and Sony's new Socialize app lets you share to Facebook and Twitter. No pricing yet, but Sony says it'll be out this April.

Organic Light-Emitting Diode TVs offer the promise of the best picture quality ever (and yes, we’re including CRT). Long “vaporware” in the TV world, 2012 might be the year we see actual models. Samsung’s 55-inch model sure seems like the real deal… maybe. They’re promising a delivery in 2012, but at the moment there’s no pricing, release date, or even a model number. We remain optimistic, but skeptical. HDGuru was told it was advancements to the lifespan of the blue phosphor that allowed development of OLED into a real (potentially) product this year.

There are few A/V products these days that I really get excited about. When Oppo released the BDP-95, I was pretty eager to get my hands on one. As you can see, the player performed flawlessly in our bench tests. It did everything the venerable BDP-83SE did but added more features such as 3D support, better analog bass management and the ability to support more streaming services such as Netflix, Blockbuster, Youtube and now Pandora.

You can get a Blu-ray player with a packet of cornflakes these days, figuratively speaking. The decks are so cheap that, for most, the very concept of a BD spinner costing £500 (a monkey, in cockney rhyming slang) is pure insanity.
However, in the world of home cinema, you tend to get what you pay for. And with cheap and cheerful Blu-ray players, that generally means that you'll get the ability to play high-def movie content, but at the detriment to performance.
Therefore, Onkyo still believes that there's enough of us out there who favour video and audio quality over our bank balances, and as such has crafted the BD-SP809, with a street price of £499.99.
