T-Mobile, Verizon sign spectrum deal to grow 4G network

Posted on Jun 26, 2012 by MG1

Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile signed an agreement covering a range of AWS spectrum swaps and sales that should improve 4G coverage for both companies.
While the deal concerns various AWS spectrum exchanges between both carriers, the net result will be improved spectrum holdings for T-Mobile in 15 of the county's top 25 markets and reaching 60 million customers.
Verizon will gain holdings that cover 22 million customers, as well as an undisclosed cash payment from T-Mobile.
"This agreement will provide T-Mobile with critical AWS spectrum, enhancing both network capacity and performance and allowing us to meet the growing consumer demand for 4G mobile broadband," T-Mobile CEO and President Phi...

Verizon Wireless announced that, starting today, it will bring its 4G network to new regions across the country.
The spread of 4G reaches 46 new markets this week, including cities in 22 states from Maine and Alaska to Texas, Indiana, and California.
The carrier is also expanding its existing 4G coverage in 22 of the cities where it already has a presence.
Those new coverage areas will get to enjoy Verizon's controversial new data plan.
Verizon's new offering scrapped nearly all of its existing plans in favor of the "Share Everything" plan, which caters to users who share data between up to 10 devices.

Verizon FiOS Quantum official: 300Mbps fiber

Verizon FiOS Quantum official: 300Mbps fiber

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon has launched its new FiOS Quantum broadband internet service, offering up to 300Mbps downloads and up to 65Mbps uploads along with digital TV and phone packages. The new service – which Verizon says could download a 5GB Full HD movie in just 2.2 minutes – doesn’t come cheap however, with plans stretching all the way to a whopping $210 per month.
That’s based on a two-year agreement for the maximum-speed FiOS Quantum service. If you’re content to “make do” with 150Mbps downloads instead of 300Mbps (and the same 65Mbps upload rate) then you can pare it down by more than 50-percent, to “just” $100 per month.
Cheaper packages offer 75/35Mbps for $90 per month, and then carry on down the ...

T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42Mbps network faster than Verizon's 4G LTE in 11 cities

T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42Mbps network faster than Verizon's 4G LTE in 11 cities

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

In speed tests conducted by PC Magazine, T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42Mbps 4G network beat Verizon's 4G LTE network in 11 cities. What does PC Magazine think about T-Mobile's HSPA+ service? "It’s really fast, covers a lot of the country and is inexpensive," says the publication. Taking it even further, PC Magazine says that with this type of speed available to its customers, the nation's fourth largest carrier doesn't really need an LTE network except to have the additional spectrum and for marketing purposes. Anyone who thinks that T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42Mbps network doesn't belong in the same conversation as LTE should probably take a look at the numbers
Although it was outperformed in some areas, as w...

Droid Incredbile 4G LTE signage arrives at some Verizon Wireless stores

The Droid Incredible was announced earlier this year by Verizon Wireless without a solid launch date. Rumors point to a June 21st launch, but there has been no solid information supporting this estimated launch date until now. According to Droid-Life, select Verizon Wireless stores received marketing materials for the next generation Incredible handset over the weekend. This doesn’t confirm the launch date, but its timing would fit in perfectly with a mid-June launch.

Dropbox confirms Galaxy S III on AT&T and Verizon won't include 50GB storage

Dropbox confirms Galaxy S III on AT&T and Verizon won't include 50GB storage

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

If that extra Dropbox storage helped swing the Galaxy S III pendulum in your favor, and you're a customer of AT&T or Verizon, it's not good news. Droid Life reports that one such expectant customer was asking Dropbox, via its forums, where their storage was. The cloud-space provider informed them that not all carriers are offering the deal, with those two big hitters being among them. This is further confirmed elsewhere on its support pages (check the source). So, just as we thought operators were loosening their grip, it seems some old habits don't die so easily.

Verizon tells the FCC it still needs AWS spectrum for LTE

Verizon tells the FCC it still needs AWS spectrum for LTE

Posted on Jun 08, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon is making a case to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in hopes of getting the FCC to approve Verizon’s purchasing of 20-30 MHz-worth of AWS spectrum to build out its LTE network. In a statement to the FCC, Verizon stated that refarming its PCS spectrum would not give it the capacity it needs to handle the growth of traffic on its LTE network. Verizon does plan to refarm the PCS spectrum to LTE anyway, but sees this as a bolstering of, and not a supplement for its plans for the AWS spectrum.
Verizon goes on to suggest that unless the FCC gives them the rubber stamp of approval on the AWS spectrum purchase, they will face network constraints in some areas as early as next yea...

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Official is as official does... right? In a bid to one-up the Galaxy S II's launch here in the States, Samsung has just announced that five carriers will soon have their own customized versions of the Galaxy S III. And by "soon," we mean "beginning in June." AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular are all in line to take part, with exact pricing and availability to be announced by each of the five carriers in the coming weeks. We are, however, told to expect on-contract prices as low as $199, and it sounds as if all five variants will keep the same 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

Of course owners of the GSM version are already rocking 4.0.4, even the Sprint version (which is actually identical save for different branding and the presence of Google Wallet) have enjoyed the update for a month.
