Ice Cream Sandwich update for AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S II delayed for technical reasons

Ice Cream Sandwich update for AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S II delayed for technical reasons

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 by MG1

Last night, it seems that word had slipped out that the Android 4.0 update was available for the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II via Kies. Unfortunately, it turned out that the update was available only for a limited time. For those unfamiliar with the process, Kies allows users to connect their Samsung-made device with a PC or Mac using a USB cable. One use of Kies is to install software updates such as Android 4.0 as an alternative to an OTA update.
So why was the Android 4.0 first made available and then apparently pulled? One AT&T customer decided to discuss the matter with an AT&T rep via a Live Chat. And during this chat, the rep said that the update has been delayed due to "Te...

Sony Xperia Ion hits AT&T June 24th for $99 on contract

Sony Xperia Ion hits AT&T June 24th for $99 on contract

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

In the tech industry, time (and the fleeting interests of geekdom) waits for no one product. So, it's understandable if you've already forgotten about Sony Mobile's US flagship: a sleekly designed, mid-range contender known as the Xperia Ion. It's been nearly six months since the electronics giant officially unveiled the device at CES and, for brand loyalists still clinging to the edge of their seats, the wait's nearly over. Starting June 24th, AT&T will be offering the LTE handset -- a first for the newly unified wireless outfit stateside -- for $99 with a new two-year agreement (insert applause for Nokia and its precedent setting Lumia 900 here).
So, what do you get for that compelling pri...

Samsung Galaxy S III -- AT&T to ship the device on or before June 21st

Posted on Jun 12, 2012 by MG1

While AT&T has confirmed the future availability of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III smartphone, the nation’s second largest carrier has not announced a release date. Last week it was reported that the device may be available on June 18th, but when preordering the handset as an AT&T Premier customer, the carrier indicates that the Galaxy S III will arrive “on or before” June 21st, Droid Matters reports. The highly anticipated smartphone will also launch on T-Mobile and Sprint on the same date. An AT&T spokesman declined to comment.

Qualcomm figures out how to support both AT&T and Verizon 4G LTE

Qualcomm figures out how to support both AT&T and Verizon 4G LTE

Posted on Jun 06, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

AT&T has a 700 MHz 4G LTE network, as does Verizon, but those networks aren’t interoperable because they use different blocks of spectrum. There’s a debate in the FCC right now as to whether operators should make their networks interoperable. It isn’t as easy as simply saying “make it so!”, there’s a lot of hardcore science involved with regards to antennas, filters, and power amplifiers. People said that it was going to be impossible to make a phone that supports multiple blocks of spectrum in the 700 MHz band, but Qualcomm has figured it out. In fact, they say that phones should be out by the end of the year that can handle three blocks of spectrum in bands below 1 GHz, three bands above t...

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Official is as official does... right? In a bid to one-up the Galaxy S II's launch here in the States, Samsung has just announced that five carriers will soon have their own customized versions of the Galaxy S III. And by "soon," we mean "beginning in June." AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular are all in line to take part, with exact pricing and availability to be announced by each of the five carriers in the coming weeks. We are, however, told to expect on-contract prices as low as $199, and it sounds as if all five variants will keep the same 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

The wait for the Sony Xperia Ion in the US has been a long one, but that summer release feels considerably closer now that the Android flagship has swung by the FCC. As we'd hope, the Ion is passing through in full AT&T regalia, carrying the 700MHz and 1,700MHz 4G LTE bands it needs to run on Big Blue -- albeit with a legacy Sony Ericsson label. Along with the expected 850MHz and 1,900MHz HSPA 3G frequencies, we're also seeing an odd instance of 1,700MHz 3G that would normally be reserved for T-Mobile. Given that there isn't matching 2,100MHz support, we're more inclined to see the 1,700MHz block as related to AT&T spectrum refarming or other, more practical purposes than as a ghost of attem...

LG E970 for AT&T with Adreno 320 GPU comes out on top of graphics benchmarks

LG E970 for AT&T with Adreno 320 GPU comes out on top of graphics benchmarks

Posted on May 29, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Cell PhonesLGAT&T

Now we don't know whether the LG E970 for AT&T that appeared in GLBenchmark's database will sport the dual-core MSM8960 Pro Snapdragon, or the quad-core APQ8064, but it will surely sport the new Adreno 320 graphics processor, judging from the GPU details revealed.
The specs also list HD 1280x768 pixels display and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and we've heard before that the Sprint version - LG LS970 "Eclipse" - of this new LG flagship might feature 2GB of RAM, like the LG Optimus LTE 2, and sport a quad-core processor, so that's what could be in store for AT&T's version as well.

This chipset paves the way for NVIDIA to be working on the 4G LTE network AT&T offers in the very near future and through the future as well with Tegra-powered devices galore. The qualification tests this chipset has just gone through will allow product manufacturers from all corners of the market to quickly and easily get set up with 4G LTE and will set NVIDIA up for big wins in the connected AT&T smart device market for some time to come.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL hits the FCC with AT&T-friendly LTE

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL hits the FCC with AT&T-friendly LTE

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

ASUS isn't known for offering its tablets to North American carriers with 3G or 4G; an FCC filing for a cellular-capable Transformer Pad TF300 could be a clue at a break in the WiFi-only trend. Along with the usual wireless, a TF300TL variant of the Android 4.0 slate has stopped by the agency with the 850MHz and 1,900MHz frequencies needed for HSPA 3G as well as, best of all, 700MHz and 1,700MHz support for LTE-based 4G. All four are what we'd look for in an AT&T-oriented tablet, so don't be surprised if Ma Bell carries a 4G Transformer Pad before long. All but the 700MHz band would be handy for Canadian networks as well. There's no surefire evidence of when the tablet might make a more form...

AT&T HTC One X bootloader unlocked via command line trickery

AT&T HTC One X bootloader unlocked via command line trickery

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

When HTC confirmed to us that it wouldn't be offering an official bootloader unlock solution for the AT&T version of the One X, we assumed that the Android hacking community would step in and find a solution. Twenty days later, that solution is here via a process detailed by grankin01 at xda-developers. The process involves using the command line and a hex editor to trick HTC's tools into believing that the AT&T One X is a Canadian version, thereby allowing the bootloader to be unlocked. Be forewarned that as of right now there isn't a simple script for this process, but instead a twelve-step program during which a typo could brick your device. It probably won't be too long until a simpler a...

AT&T begins refarming 2G spectrum in New York City

AT&T begins refarming 2G spectrum in New York City

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: AT&T

As mobile operators continue to move toward the promised land known as "the future," it grows ever more important for them to make some room for it. AT&T announced today that it has started the process of refarming its 2G 1900MHz spectrum in New York City, which should alleviate some of the growing demand on the carrier's 3G and 4G networks within the city. AT&T isn't volunteering specific details on how long the transition will take, and it's only saying that the freed-up bandwidth will be used for high-speed services. There are still plenty of customers on 2G-only devices that will be affected by the transition -- they may still have service for now, but it will likely degrade as the proce...
