UK Kindle Touch starts shipping week early

Posted on Apr 20, 2012 by MG1

Those in the UK who pre-ordered the Kindle Touch or Kindle Touch 3G have been getting a nice surprise today, as Amazon has released the devices a week earlier than anticipated. Originally slated to be in stock from 27 April, the new eBook readers are now already on sale (on 20 April).
"Orders from customers worldwide for our new line of electronic ink Kindles have exceeded our expectations," said Kindle EU's vice president, Jorrit Van der Meulen.
"We know that UK customers are eager to get their hands on these new Kindles, which is why we’re delighted to be able to ship several days earlier than we planned."

E Ink revenues nose dive 60% in January

E Ink revenues nose dive 60% in January

E Ink, the popular company that provides paper-look gray-scale displays for eReaders, reported consolidated revenues of $48.02 million in January, down 63.6% from the same month last year and 11% sequentially. The growing popularity of media tablets with full-color displays likely played a big role in the decline — sales of Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet are thought to be eating into the companies’ respective dedicated eReader businesses to an extent. Even though E Ink’s revenue took a nose dive in January, the company said that it expects to post revenues of $1.35 billion this year, up 5% from 2011.

Amazon profits down in Q4 2011 despite Kindle success

Amazon profits down in Q4 2011 despite Kindle success

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG1

Amazon has just announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011 and despite sales of Kindles nearly tripling over the Holidays, the company’s profits were down and profit margins were very tiny. Amazon’s net income stood at $177 million, down 58% year-over-year. Just as before, though, the company gave no hard numbers about Kindle sales, so that relative growth gives us little idea about actual sales.
With total sales growing by 35% to $17.4 billion that profit margin just looks very, very slim. Part of the reason is that Amazon is selling its Kindle Fire at about the price it manufactures it for, or at a slight loss. The outlook for the next quarter is not rosy either - the c...

Here's how to root your Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (hint: it's super simple)

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

The Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet is probably the most affordable 7-inch tablet offering you a decent amount of space, extendible via a microSD card, but that card slot there also opens up another possibility. Turns out, rooting the Nook Tablet is done easiest via a microSD card.
So how do you do it? All you need is a microSD card of 2GB or more, a computer running on Windows, and the Nook Tablet with its software version being 1.4.1 or earlier. There are also separate instructions for Mac and Linux.

We’ve heard plenty of speculation surrounding Apple’s upcoming event in New York City, where the company is expected to unveil an educational product. It’s believed to be a digital textbook publishing tool or a “GarageBand for eBooks,” a project that Steve Jobs himself worked on for several years before his death. And now, tips from AppleInsider reveal some more details about the project, including that it’s internally code-named “Bliss.”

Barnes & Noble considers selling Nook business

Barnes & Noble considers selling Nook business

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

Barnes & Noble conducted an unusual strategy Thursday that amounted to an attempt to sell its Nook e-reader business. Although its Nook sales spiked 70 percent over what they were last year, the company was considering both breaking out the Nook group both for separate reporting as well as a selloff. The company wanted to "unlock that value" in its digital business, it said, and was planning a review that by the end of the year would make a decision on the business.

Amazon HTML5 Kindle format may already be in graphic novels

Amazon HTML5 Kindle format may already be in graphic novels

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Amazon may be beta testing its new Kindle e-book format with selected publishers. The new format, referred to by Amazon as Kindle Format 8 (KF8), provides support for HTML5-based content. The Digital Reader, which revealed the testing, also reports that a number of graphic novels may already be available in the format and readable by the new Kindle Fire.
Amazon has developed the KF8 e-book format to optimize the capabilities of the recently released Android tablet and other full mobile platforms. It's said to be especially suited to children’s picture books, comics and graphic novels, technical and engineering books, and cookbooks. The KF8 supports many but not all HTML5 features. Kindle Touch jailbroken with simple MP3 hack

Kindle Touch jailbroken with simple MP3 hack

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Just because the Kindle Touch isn't Android-based doesn't mean that it wouldn't be fun and potentially useful to gain root on it. Developer Yifan Lu has managed to do just that and has released the jailbreak tool for the e-reader in a format that might surprise you: an mp3 file. It turns out that the Kindle Touch's operating system is slightly different from previous Kindles in that it uses significantly more HTML in its UI instead of Java, which apparently means that — for now — it's much easier to exploit. Lu was able to put the rooting commands in the ID3 comment tag of an mp3 file, complete with a "jailbroken' splash screen.

US Justice Department also investigating Apple and others for ebook price fixing

US Justice Department also investigating Apple and others for ebook price fixing

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Ebook ReadersApple

We heard just yesterday that the European Commission was investigating possible ebook price fixing by Apple and five major book publishers, and now the US Department of Justice has confirmed that it's investigating the situation. (To be clear, the news is the confirmation, not the investigation — that's been rumored since last year.) Like the European investigation, the DOJ is interested in the "agency model" of selling books, whereby the publishers set the final prices and Apple takes a cut; that's in contrast to the wholesale model used by Amazon in which the publishers sell the books to the retailer and Amazon decides the final prices at will. By agreeing to the agency model, Apple gave t...

Sony Reader WiFi officially drops to $129.99

Sony Reader WiFi officially drops to $129.99

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Love 'em or hate 'em, one thing's for sure -- e-readers just keep getting cheaper. The latest to see a dip in price is the Sony Reader WiFi, which debuted at $149.99 just a couple of months back, but has now received a permanent drop to $129.99. What's more, Sony is also running a trade-in program through the end of December that will give you an additional $50 off if you turn in any old e-reader. Not quite the instant discount that an ad-supported Kindle gives you, but certainly not a bad deal if you're looking to upgrade from an older model.

Power struggles amid display manufacturers, as E Ink Holdings (EIH) apparently suspends its fringe-field switching (FFS) LCD panel production agreement with LG Display and instead shifts manufacture to rival CPT. FFS displays are a key rival to the IPS panels that LG Display and others supply Apple for the iPad, promising wide viewing angles among other benefits. In addition to ending the FFS production agreement, EIH will buy back bonds in its Hydis display subsidiary, DigiTimes reports, which LG Display had bought as part of its original agreement back in January 2010.

Nook Simple Touch gets $79 limited edition for Black Friday, makes other e-readers vaguely jealous

Nook Simple Touch gets $79 limited edition for Black Friday, makes other e-readers vaguely jealous

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Barnes & Noble is celebrating Black Friday with a white border. The bookstore chain is offering up a limited edition of its excellent Nook Simple Touch reader this Friday, November 25th. Slight aesthetic differences aside, the real news here is the price -- the company is knocking $20 off the already low-cost device, making it the same as Amazon's ad-supported, touchscreen-free fourth gen Kindle. The $79 deal will only last one day, so get 'em while the e-ink is hot. Press info after the jump.

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 details leaked, may land November 16th for $250

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 details leaked, may land November 16th for $250

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Barnes & Noble is holding a press conference in New York City on Monday and it looks like the rumors surrounding a possible Nook Color 2 announcement could be true. According to Engadget, which recently published a purported image of the new device along with specs, the Nook Color 2 will look identical to the current model. The tablet reportedly sports a 7-inch IPS color display with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution, 16GB of storage, a dual-core TI OMAP 4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM and more. Interestingly, Barnes & Noble may charge $250 for the Nook Color 2, which is $50 more expensive than Amazon’s $199 Kindle Fire. Engadget says the unit will hit stores on November 16th but that ...

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 reportedly launching on November 7th

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 reportedly launching on November 7th

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Barnes & Noble may release the successor to its Nook Color Android tablet on November 7th, according to The Digital Reader. Reportedly, the bookseller is preparing an entire new “Nook” department of its brick and mortar stores, which will include LED TVs and point-of-sale systems for shoppers interested in buying the eReader on the spot. It is unclear what sort of specs the Nook Color 2 will feature, although we suspect the device will run Android and its screen will be similar to the 7-inch screen on the original Nook Color. Additionally, we wouldn’t be surprised if Barnes & Noble lowered the price of the $249 Nook Color 2 down to $199 so that it will compete better with Amazon’s $199 Kindl...
