Sandia National Lab Starts Licensing Out Super Quiet, Hyper-Efficient CPU Cooler

Think your CPU cooler kicks ass? Some of the top minds in the country disagree. Researchers at the Sandia National Laboratories have been working on a novel new design for a rapidly spinning cooler, one that they say is up to 30 percent more efficient than traditional models AND virtually silent in typical use cases. Sounds crazy ambitious? Apparently, it isn't; Sandia's already looking to license the technology out to electronics suppliers, and one unidentified CPU cooling company has already hopped on the bandwagon.

NVIDIA details top-tier GeForce GTX 680M Kepler GPU for Ultrabooks, other laptops

Posted on Jun 07, 2012 by MG1

When NVIDIA took the wraps off its family of 28nm Kepler GPUs, it promised some mobile chips designed for Ultrabooks were soon to follow. Two and a half months later, we haven't seen that many laptops running the 600M series, save for the Acer Aspire M5, which isn't even on sale yet. Now, though, we're about to see a lot more: in advance of Computex, a computer-centric trade show about to be overrun by Ultrabooks, NVIDIA is spilling details on the GeForce GTX 680M. As the top-tier offering in the mobile Kepler lineup, it packs a 720MHz engine clock, 1,344 CUDA cores and a 256-bit memory bus powering up to 4GB of GDDR5 RAM. As a refresher, all of Kepler's GPUs make use of a new GPU Boost feat...

MSI Intros New Cost-Effective GeForce GTX 550 Ti Graphics Card

MSI Intros New Cost-Effective GeForce GTX 550 Ti Graphics Card

Posted on Jun 01, 2012 by MG3

MSI introduced a new cost-effective variant of its GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics card (model: N550GTX-Ti-MD1GD5-V2), which will allow the company to compete in price-points deep within US $150. The card features a similar cooling solution to that of NVIDIA reference design, backed up by a new PCB design. The GPU sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of 900 MHz (core), 1800 MHz (CUDA cores), and 3.80 GHz (GDDR5 memory effective). The GPU packs 192 CUDA cores, and a 192-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 1 GB of memory. The new PCB layout also allowed MSI to improve the display output loadout, which includes one each of dual-link DVI, D-Sub, and HDMI (standard-size). The N550GTX-Ti-MD1GD...

GeForce GTX 660 Photo Surfaces

GeForce GTX 660 Photo Surfaces

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

Well, hey now. The folks at vr-zone got their hands on a picture of MSI's GeForce GTX 660. This fifth GK104 based part might be introduced at next week's Computex:
While the image of the board is obviously photoshopped (the lower part of the bracket is not present, the heatsink has a six-pin connector slapped on top), we checked with our sources and the product appears to be legit. The highlighted single six-pin connector on the heatsink was positioned there to highlight that the board cannot pull more than 150 Watts, which the author of the leaked image made sure off.

GeForce GTX 690 passes P20000 in 3DMark 11

The GeForce GTX 690 might be expensive, but it certainly is sexy. In Taiwan there is this pro-overclocker called TIN and he applied some tender love adn care (TLC) to the card, with the result of setting a new 3DMark 11 record - P20962 points using a single GeForce GTX 690 graphics card (well okay 2 GPUs).

PowerColor Radeon HD 7970 X2 Devil13 Graphics Card Detailed

Posted on May 29, 2012 by MG3

Last week, we were teased with the first picture of PowerColor's Vortex III cooling solution. A little later that week, we also got reports that AMD's add-in board (AIB) partners are working on off-spec dual-GPU graphics accelerators, calling them "Radeon HD 7970 X2", even as AMD's own HD 7990 is on course. It turns out that the card the Vortex III is designed to cool is PowerColor's newest high-end creation, the Radeon HD 7970 X2 Devil13.

More graphics card 'gossip' today. It seems that the GeForce GTX 660 is scheduled to arrive this summer. i've heard gossip about Computex already, but that seems a little too soon to be honest. SweClockers got some info claiming that the card would become available for 2500 Swedish kronors, which is around $350 (including high VAT). Earlier leaks said that it will cost between $299 and $329.

Interesting news from TPU today, they noticed via Donim haber that dual-GPU based Radeon HD 7970 X2 cards from board parters might be in the works. That means that the board partners are working on their own dual-GPU solutions based on Tahiti GPUs.
AMD is expected to release a RadeoN HD 7990, but that one seems to be delayed.Initially we expected that one to be released during Computex 2012, but so far nothing substantial has surfaced. DonanimHaber now reports that manufacturers are tired of waiting for actual Radeon HD 7990 model from AMD, so they will come up with something new.

Nvidia CEO: GeForce Grid 'will do for video games what cable television did for video'

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

"The skiing industry would be a lot larger if you could just go do it," explains Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. There isn't a ski pole in sight: it's a metaphor for how he wants to expand the reach of video games to entirely new audiences. Two weeks ago, at the company's GPU Technology Conference, Huang introduced a new technology on stage: a GPU called GeForce Grid, specifically designed to stream video games to any smartphone, tablet, PC, or app-savvy TV. Today, however, at the company's annual investor meeting, Huang has revealed that his company is looking to make graphically potent games more portable and convenient for everyone, not just existing players. "The entire video game market is s...

Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 launches with high-end specs, $399 price

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

Been lusting after a GeForce GTX 680 at a more affordable price point? Nvidia has done the inevitable and trickled its Kepler GPU architecture down to a more wallet-friendly level with the introduction of the $399 GeForce GTX 670. The new card is based on the same DNA, in Nvidia's words, as the GTX 680, but nixes 192 CUDA cores and about a tenth off the base and boost operating speeds to arrive at 1,344 cores and 915MHz / 980MHz clocks. It retains the same generous 2GB video buffer, made up of 256-bit GDDR5 RAM, and in a standard configuration will ship with two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors. Nvidia rates the GTX 670's TDP at 170W, however if you run it in a completely stock config, the c...
