LG halts tablet development to renew its focus on smartphones

LG halts tablet development to renew its focus on smartphones

Like its competitor HTC, LG is turning away from tablets and focusing on smartphones for its mobile strategy. Ken Hong, a spokesman for the Korean manufacturer, told Bloomberg that “We’ve decided to put all new tablet development on the back burner for the time being in order to focus on smartphones.”
LG has made a few tablets, including the Optimus Pad which launched alongside several high-profile Optimus-branded smartphones. Sales figures for LG’s tablet line are not known, but they are likely low. Apple’s iPad dominates the tablet market and companies like IDC predict the iPad’s lead will only grow in 2012. As a result, there’s not a lot of room for new products to compete.

While we learned quite a lot about the upcoming Microsoft Surface tablets, there were still plenty of questions that remained unanswered after the official announcement was over. One of them was what processor the Windows RT model will come with. All that was mentioned was that an ARM chip of some kind will tick under the tablet's hood.
However, NVIDIA was quick to acknowledge that the Windows RT Microsoft Surface tablet will sport a Tegra processor. Exactly which processor will be used is still unclear, but the quad-core Tegra 3 is the first that comes to mind. One possibility is that the chip will be implemented using the NVIDIA KAI platform, which promises fluid performance at a competiti...

Certain InterDigital subsidiaries will receive a $375 million cash payment from Intel in exchange for handing over roughly 1,700 patents and patent applications related to 3G, Long Term Evolution (LTE), and 802.11 wireless technologies. Intel plans to use its newly acquired wireless patents to help support its strategic investments in the mobile segment, the Santa Clara chip maker said. By adding to its already large and diverse patent portfolio, Intel also puts itself in better position to avoid costly lawsuits.
It's an obvious win for InterDigital, which develops, markets, and licenses all kinds of advanced wireless technologies. InterDigital has built up a portfolio of around 20,000 paten...

Nokia Lumia 900 finally available on O2 Germany

Posted on Jun 20, 2012 by MG1

It has been a very long wait, but the Nokia Lumia 900 has finally become available on O2 Germany, weeks after we first expected it to arrive.
There is of course also no evidence of 32 GB of storage, just the usual 16 GB, with the handset available for 514 Euro contract-free.
With the handset arriving on the eve of the Windows Phone 8 announcement, we can only hope Microsoft has some good news for existing owners.
See the phone at O2 here.

Visa, MasterCard hacked -- 50GB of data stolen from more than 79 banks

Posted on Jun 20, 2012 by MG1

A hacker known as Reckz0r on Twitter announced that he has illegally accessed servers belonging to dozens of large banks. To prove it, the hacker released data relating to Visa and MasterCard credit cards. The data leaked includes full names, addresses, debit or credit card type, phone numbers and email addresses. Reckz0r claims this is only a portion of the data stolen, and the full amount is “about 50GB or bigger” taken from “over 79 large banks” that he has been targeting over the last three months. Global Payments, an international credit card processing company, confirmed in March that hackers stole credit card numbers belonging to as many as 1.5 million MasterCard and Visa customers. I...

Google’s security blog on Tuesday revealed new details on how the search giant is keeping Internet users safe from malware. The Mountain View-based company protects 600 million users through built-in protection for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari that warns users of dangerous websites. Every day the company encounters about 9,500 new websites that have been compromised or specifically designed for malware distribution. Approximately 12 million to 14 million Google Search queries, and 300,000 downloads, also trigger the company’s warning to caution users on a daily basis. “By protecting Internet users, webmasters, ISPs, and Google over the years, we’ve built up a steadily more sophisticated under...

Raspberry Pi gets initial Chromium OS support

Posted on Jun 20, 2012 by MG1

If you’re one of the geeks who gets giddy at the thought of getting your hands on the tiny and cheap little Raspberry Pi computer, you’ll soon have a new choice of operating system to run on the device. A Chromium OS hacker going by Hexxeh has been working the port the Chromium OS over to the Raspberry Pi board. The project is still a work in progress.
The good news is that the cheap little computer board has been approved by the official Chromium OS team to run the operating system. What that means for now is that the Chromium OS can boot on the Raspberry Pi board. That doesn’t mean the operating system is stable on the hardware though.

We were waiting for an announcement from Sony today, and here it is, straight from a side event the company is holding at CommunicAsia 2012 - the expo where it usually unveils new stuff.
It's just that this year there is nothing new, since the company announced a barrage of new handsets already in the last month or so, and has gathered all six of them for the world to see for the first time.
These include the global edition of Sony Xperia ion, the rugged Xperia go, the Xperia acro S, the recently announced Xperia miro and tipo, and the Xperia neo L. They will be soon on sale (Sony promises Q3), but what we are really waiting for is the global version of the Xperia GX, or that elusive Mint I ...

Flame malware developed by US, Israel to slow Iranian nuclear efforts

Posted on Jun 20, 2012 by MG1

It turns out that the massive Flame malware attack last month was a sophisticated computer virus developed by the US and Israel in an effort to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program. Citing unnamed Western officials with knowledge of the effort, the Washington Post reported that the attack involved the National Security Agency, the CIA, and Israel’s military as well as the use of the infamous Stuxnet virus.
The Flame virus was first discovered last month when Iran detected a series of cyber attacks on its oil industry. Although the attacks were allegedly carried out by Israel alone, the software used was developed in collaboration with the US, adopting much of the same code as the Stuxnet virus.

HTC EVO 4G LTE does not support Google Wallet?

HTC EVO 4G LTE does not support Google Wallet?

Posted on Jun 20, 2012 by MG1

Whether it has to do with the rumored Sprint 'Touch' mobile payment technology that the nation's third largest carrier is said to be developing, or just a case of gremlins invading the software, users of the carrier's new flagship HTC EVO 4G LTE have been unable to get Google Wallet to work. Members of Xda developers forum, resourceful as ever, found that tricking the software into thinking that it was running on the Samsung GALAXY Nexus would allow it to run perfectly.
If only the story ended here. But it didn't as soon the HTC EVO 4G LTE returned a message that "Google Wallet has not yet been certified in your country or on your device / carrier," leading many to believe that the service w...

Chirpify takes political donations to Twitter

Posted on Jun 20, 2012 by MG1

We hear expressions like “if everyone just gave a few dollars…” all the time for things like charitable donations, reducing the poverty level, etc. But in reality the one place where that mindset probably makes the most profound difference is in political elections. There’s been a paradigm shift in fundraising such that candidates now truly care about those $10 or $20 donations made by average voters. And the less friction there is, the better.
