HTC One S drops to $99 at Best Buy and $49 at T-Mobile

HTC One S drops to $99 at Best Buy and $49 at T-Mobile

Posted on Jun 15, 2012 by MG1

Two pretty sweet deals are taking place right now for the HTC One S Android handset. The device has dropped in price significantly at both Best Buy and T-Mobile, selling for $99.99 and $49.99 respectively with a two-year contract.
Note that the sale at T-Mobile will require you to pay $99.99 up front for the phone and then get your $50 back via mail-in rebate. If you’re like me and absolutely despise rebates, Best Buy is the better option. The sale price of the One S at T-Mobile is part of an even bigger Father’s Day sale going on in which many of the Android smartphones are discounted or made completely free as long as you glue yourself to the network for two years.

HTC drops federal appeal of ITC complaint exonerating Apple, more arrows remain in the quiver

HTC drops federal appeal of ITC complaint exonerating Apple, more arrows remain in the quiver

HTC was understandably upset when its first ITC complaint against Apple was tossed out. The company must have since decided that it has bigger fish to fry, as it was just granted a motion to dismiss its federal-level appeal. The choice isn't a defeat so much as an acknowledgment that other disputes are underway which stand a better chance of surviving scrutiny. As it stands, HTC already has more appeals either on deck or in progress that it will more likely want to pursue, such as the dispute over using Google's patents as well as its off-again, on-again acquisition target S3 Graphics' loss at the ITC last year. Apple, naturally, hasn't been waiting around.

An alleged LulzSec hacker won’t be having many more lulz if he’s thrown in jail. Per the Los Angeles Times, 20-year-old British man Ryan Cleary has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles for allegedly hacking into several major media websites including the sites for the Fox reality show “The X-Factor” and PBS’s “News Hour.” Cleary hacked into the sites to either deface them or steal peoples’ personal data, the indictment alleges, and he could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. In all, Cleary faces one count of conspiracy and two counts of the unauthorized impairment of protected computers.

Steve Wozniak Siri criticism Apple iOS 6

Steve Wozniak Siri criticism Apple iOS 6

Posted on Jun 15, 2012 by MG1

Steve Wozniak, who seems to relish needling the company that he co-founded, told Albany’s Times Union that he liked Siri a lot better before Apple purchased it in 2010. “I start telling everyone I knew and speaking around the world about how this was the future of computing, speaking things in normal ways, feeling like you’re talking to a human,” Wozniak said of the original Siri program. When asked for an example of how Siri used to be better when it was just a third-party iOS app, Wozniak said that he used to be able to get Siri to list prime numbers greater than 87, but when he asks Siri to do that now it thinks he’s talking about prime ribs. This is not the first time that Wozniak has sl...

Anonymous member says group is hugely divided

Posted on Jun 15, 2012 by MG1

A seasoned member of the hacking collective known as Anonymous has spoken out about the huge split within the group.
The veteran, interviewed by The Daily Beast, says the group is not the well-oiled, single-minded machine, purely focused on sticking it to the man, as many believe it to be.
Instead he and many others want nothing to do with political agendas and wish simply to continue the notorious and crude 4Chan.org website's tradition of unrelenting online malice just for the "Lulz."
The subject William (not his real name) says the mask-wearing members of the hactivist movement, who have taken on big companies and government institutions are nothing but "a joke."

Nokia to acquire Scalado, build a better Lumia (Updated)

Nokia to acquire Scalado, build a better Lumia (Updated)

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Scalado has more than a few tricks squirreled away in its mobile imaging bag, tricks that have served the likes of HTC and RIM well. Now, Espoo want those tricks all to itself. After working with the Swedish firm for years, Nokia has decided to take its partnership with Scalado to the next level: acquisition. The imaging outfit will be turning over its developers, intellectual property, technology and moniker over to Nokia in the third quarter of 2012 -- although the terms of the deal are confidential. Finland's favorite smartphone manufacturer plans to use Scalado's technology to enhance "imaging experiences for Nokia Lumia devices." Sounds good to us. Check out the official (and brief) pre...

Google adds more detail to Hot Searches with related images and links

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Google has announced that it has updated its Hot Searches feature to provide even more detail on the most popular news of the moment. The refreshed page now includes both images and related news links for the most searched for stories in the US, as well as details on how many people have actually searched for that particular bit of news in the last 24 hours. In addition to the increased level of detail provided, Hot Searches has also cut back on the number of results it shows — instead of showing exactly 20 results each day, the page now displays "only the truly hottest news stories of the day," which so far is a lot less than 20. On Monday June 11th, for instance, only three stories were fe...

Nokia 808 PureView arrives fashionably late in India, 41MP in tow

Nokia 808 PureView arrives fashionably late in India, 41MP in tow

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

After initially announcing it would come in May, and then dropping a countdown red herring, the PureView is finally opening its big 808-eye in India today. The 41MP camera (and phone!) lands with a 33,899 Rupee ($600) MSRP, depending on your barter skills. The PureView might not be a spec heavyweight, with its single-core 1.3GHz chip, 512MB RAM and 360 x 640 display, but we still found it hummed along smartly with its nimble Symbian Belle OS. For those of you who've already set the cash aside, might be time to call that Indian friend.

Nokia has issued a release Thursday morning, actually it was more of a dire warning. The Finnish based handset manufacturer said that to 'sharpen its strategy, improve its operating model and return the company to profitable growth' the company would cut up to 10,000 jobs and close its Salo factory by the end of 2013. The company wants to reduce its operating expenses while at the same time increasing the location based services it makes available to Nokia customers. It also plans on bringing in revenue by offering its mapping and location-based services to other industries

Apple to shutter Ping in next iTunes release

Apple to shutter Ping in next iTunes release

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

According to AllThingsD, Apple is set to shutter its Ping social network with the next release of iTunes. Ping was first introduced back in September of 2010 but the music-focused social network never gained much traction. Even Apple CEO Tim Cook recently admitted that the platform wasn’t something that users “want to put a lot of energy into.”
When Apple debuted Ping, it didn’t have any integrations with other platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and users could only access it through iTunes or iOS and not through the web. It was also difficult for users to find and connect with other users, making the platform feel much more commerce-oriented than social.

Droid RAZR MAXX sales: iPhone 4S no longer king at Verizon

Droid RAZR MAXX sales: iPhone 4S no longer king at Verizon

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Given the iPhone’s popularity, it must be the top-selling smartphone on the top three major U.S. wireless carriers, right? Not so fast, says William Blair analyst Anil Doradla, who penned a note to investors this week stating that the Droid RAZR MAXX is now the best-selling smartphone on Verizon even though the iPhone maintains its top spot at AT&T and Sprint. This doesn’t mean that Doradla is down on Apple as a whole, of course, as Barron’s reports that the analyst is “unfazed” by slipping sales at Verizon and still maintains his Outperform rating on shares of Apple stock. There are some good reasons that the iPhone might not be selling as well as high-end Android handsets on Verizon, with ...

Anonymous hackers interview: Dark side of Anonymous, LulzSec revealed

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

It’s no mystery that the hackers behind notorious “hacktivist” groups Anonymous and LulzSec cause a tremendous amount of trouble for the companies and agencies they target, but thousands of young web users cheer them on with the belief that these groups are fighting for Internet freedom around the world. According to a recent profile, however, this isn’t always the case. In a rare in-depth interview with Anonymous members, The Daily Beast’s Parmy Olson uncovers the dark side of Anonymous, likening the divide between the group’s activist members and its pranksters to Batman and the Joker. While some Anonymous members indeed look to topple oppressors, others simply “try to cause chaos, lulz, w...

HTC One S deal: price down to $100 on Best Buy

T-Mobile’s HTC One S is one of the carrier’s best Android offers for the moment, and it’s likely to remain so for a couple of weeks until the Samsung Galaxy S III launches, but now there’s one more reason to buy the One S - it’s price dropped to $99.99 on a 2-year contract on Best Buy.
The One S deal is good for both new T-Mobile customers and for upgraders, and will run for a limited time.
There’s no catch if you don’t count the fact that you have to order online as most brick and morter Best Buy stores don’t have T-Mobile handsets for sale. Hit the source link below to get the One S for a good price while the deal lasts.

Comcast Refuses to Help Copyright Holders Sue Its Subscribers

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Copyright holders like the RIAA and MPAA think it's their god-given right to sue BitTorrent users into eternal poverty for illegal file sharing. Well Comcast has had enough. The company is refusing to comply with subpoenas for user data. That's right, Comcast is sticking up for the little guy.
In court documents (embedded below) the ISP says that the lawsuits over illegal file sharing have gotten out of hand and amount to court-ordered shakedowns of its customers. Indeed, as TorrentFreak points out, more than a quarter million people have been sued over file sharing in the last couple of years. The lawsuits are launched by copyright holders, but Comcast ends up aiding in the financial ruin o...
