Clemson researchers show how to print cells with your classic HP inkjet

Clemson researchers show how to print cells with your classic HP inkjet

Scientists have been taking inspiration from printers for everything from treating burns to recreating cardiac tissue. Researchers at Clemson University have perfected a way to use an ordinary inkjet printer to actually print living cells — and they've put together a how-to guide and video for the Journal of Visualized Experiments to show how it works. Starting with an HP DeskJet 500, researchers empty a normal inkjet cartridge, and then fill it with a solution of suspended cells and fluorescent matter, the combination of which they call "bio-ink." A platform is set up beneath the printer head and layered with slides to receive the output. Using a standard word processor to drive the printer...

Xerox Mobile Scanner

Xerox Mobile Scanner

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

Xerox and consumer aren't necessarily words that get thrown together a lot, but the company's Mobile Scanner could actually find a home with some -- provided they're willing part with $250. It's reasonably light-weight (only 22.5 ounces) and it can (almost) instantly beam any document you feed it to an Eye-Fi connected device. It'll survive 300 pages on a single charge and keep your Android phone full of docs. What makes it special is the ability to scan not just JPGs, but PDFs. You can also switch between JPG, black and white PDF or color PDF with just a few taps of a button. It can even create multipage PDFs if you just feed a second document through within five seconds. Around back you'll...

HP posts fix for LaserJet exploits

HP posts fix for LaserJet exploits

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Imaging DevicesHP

HP has posted a new driver update for its web-connected and networked LaserJet printers in an attempt to plug a malware explot. The was brought on after findings from Columbia University were revealed late in November. While no customers have reported attacks, HP claimed, the firmware upgrade would prevent them from happening in the first place.
HP still recommends common-sense tactics to lock down printers, such as securing putting them behind firewalls and disabling remote firmware uploads on exposed printers. Updating the drivers should make the printers secure against other currently known attacks as well.

Fuji Xerox to launch Dropbox-like cloud storage service for its copiers

Fuji Xerox to launch Dropbox-like cloud storage service for its copiers

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG15

Fuji Xerox will launch a new cloud storage service that hooks directly into its multifunction copiers next week, allowing documents to be uploaded by scan or fax, then edited or downloaded by computer or phone.

The "Working Folder" service will provide features similar to that of existing cloud services and standard file servers, with encryption, versioning and access control by user. But Fuji Xerox stressed its tight integration with a new line of copiers that will go on sale Monday, saving potential clients the hassle of linking up offerings from disparate companies or managing their own servers.

Researchers expose printer vulnerability, turn LaserJets into literal time bombs (update)

Researchers expose printer vulnerability, turn LaserJets into literal time bombs (update)

Your precious printer might seem innocuous but, in reality, it could be a ticking time bomb just waiting for some hacker to trigger it. Oh, and we mean that not just figuratively, but literally as well -- they could actually be caused to burst into flames by some ne'er-do-well half-way around the globe. Of course, the potential doesn't end at remote arson, an attacker could easily gain access to a network or steal documents, and hijacking the lowly device would require little more than printing an infected file. So far researchers at Columbia University have only managed to exploit the hole on HP printers, but it's possible (if not likely) that others are also affected. Most printers look fo...

HP LaserJet printers pose massive security risk, say Columbia University researchers

HP LaserJet printers pose massive security risk, say Columbia University researchers

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Imaging DevicesHP

MSNBC is reporting a security flaw that could affect millions of HP LaserJet printers. According to Ang Cui and Salvatore Stolfo of Columbia University, the issue stems from the fact that the HP LaserJet printers tested do not require a signature or certificate to identify the source of remote software updates. Knowing this, Cui and Stolfo are able to exploit the fact that every time a LaserJet accepts a new job it checks for an included software update.
One demonstration by the duo involved infecting a printer through a virus-laden print job. A tax return sent to the infected printer was then surreptitiously forwarded to a remote computer posing as a hacker's workstation. A second, more ala...

The MG4120 and MG3120 also can duplex automatically.

HP Made a 3D Scanner You Can Actually Afford

HP Made a 3D Scanner You Can Actually Afford

Posted on Sep 13, 2011 by MG1

Scanners are a bit of a running joke around the Giz office. "If you post a scanner, you're probably fired," our editors demi-joke. So it's sorta distressing news that HP's got a cheap 3D scanner that's actually kind of awesome.
HP's TopShot Laserjet Pro M275 works by taking six images of an object and compiling them into one 3D image. It also connects to wireless networks, so it can send the image wherever as soon as it's scanned, and it's got AirPrint, which lets you print directly from an iPad, Pod, or Phone.
But the price is the oh-hey-waitaminute bit: $400 is sort of nuts for a 3D scanner. The TopShot certainly won't have the same granular image quality as the models that go for tens of ...

Epson outs Stylus NX430 Small-in-One printer

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

Epson has rolled out a new printer that will go perfectly with that space saving AIO computer you have. The new Epson printer is the NX430 and while it is an all in one printer, Epson calls the printer a small-in-one because of its small size. The machine measures in at 15.4″ x 11.8″ x 5.7″ and it weighs 9 pounds. That makes the printer considerably smaller than other AIO printers on the market. The printer is fully featured as well.
It has integrated Epson Wireless connectivity to allow the user to print directly from their network. The wireless connectivity supports networks up to 802.11n speed. The NX430 also supports cloud printing and it can print email sent from a smartphone as well as...
