Netbooks Alive and Well in MSI Country, New Wind U180 Follows Cedar Trail into Town
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksMSIWind U180
Who knew netbooks would prove so resilient? By all means, the growing popularity and falling prices of tablet PCs along with the rollout of Intel's Ultrabook bandwagon could have spelled doom for the netbook form factor. But along comes Cedar Trail and suddenly there's renewed interest in these pint-sized notebooks, at least for one more generation anyway. MSI, one of the driving forces in the netbook category, just unveiled its new Wind U180 for 2012. "The Wind U180, meticulously crafted by MSI for 2012, marks a new zenith in computer technology, offering both performance and esthetically pleasing looks," MSI says. Lenovo IdeaPad Y470p with Radeon HD 7690M Graphics Now Available for Pre-order
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksLenovoIdeaPad Y470p
Lenovo kicked off the new year by unveiling its new lineup of IdeaPad laptops at CES 2012. Despite as many as one-and-a-half dozen new Lenovo laptops being announced at the annual extravaganza, the company still managed to save one model for later. The IdeaPad Y470p may not have made it to CES, but it’s now up for preorder on Lenovo’s website. Unlike the GeForce GT 520M-toting Y470, the Y470p packs the much more capable Radeon HD 7690M GPU.

February 17th is again believed to bring forth the arrival of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.0.7473
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksRIM BlackBerryPlayBook 2
It’s not the first time we’ve heard a February 17th release date attached to the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 software, but yet again, the date is mentioned in the latest rumor that surrounds the highly anticipated software.
Well, we’ve heard various dates in February for the update’s release, though, the date of February 17th seems to keep on coming up more than anything else. Back at CES, we were fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at the upcoming software, but the PlayBook that we saw running the new software had versions 2.0.07116. However, it was reported that RIM was already testing newer versions back at the labs behind closed doors. Therefore, it’s very likely we’ll be seeing a ...

Your Next Laptop Might Have a Kinect Inside
Like UnlikeFiled in: Notebooks
The thinking heads at Redmond envision laptop users shaking their rumps and gyrating in front of their notebooks in the not-too-distant future. Imagine being able to raise your hand and manipulate tiles in Windows 8 or moving around documents (insert inevitable comparison to Minority Report). That's the path we're on as Microsoft flirts with the idea of integrating Kinect motion sensors into laptops.

Lenovo ThinkPad X130e now available, estimated ship date of February 9th
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksLenovoThinkPad x130e
The student-friendly ThinkPad X130e has completed the tech cycle: it has been leaked, announced, and delayed, and now it's available to order on Lenovo's website. In case you've forgotten, the system has an 11.6-inch, 1366x768 display and it comes in two base configs: one with AMD's E-300 APU and another with Intel's Core i3-2367M. Both systems have an estimated ship date of February 9th, and they'll cost you $429 and $549, respectively.
What makes the X130e different than other ThinkPads? Well, Lenovo says it's strengthened the system all around to make sure it will stand up to the rigors of being tossed around in a knapsack: there's a rubber strip around the entire system, a beefed-up hing...

Some HP Envy 15 screens display orange where red should be
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksHPEnvy 15-1110ea
If you're completely satisfied with your HP Envy 15, you might want to stop reading now. There seems to be a problem with some of the 1080p Radiance Display screens, and we're afraid it's one of those things you may not be able to unsee once you know the truth. Okay, here's the news: certain screens don't seem to be able to properly reproduce red and violet colors. There's a lengthy forum thread over at Notebook Review discussing the issue, and we've also confirmed it on our review unit (see pictures below). Some users also claim they received notebooks with excessive keyboard flex and dented USB ports, but it's the red / orange issue that has the most Envy 15 owners up in arms.

Sony Freshens Up Vaio Series with New Color and Hardware Options
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSony
Sony today announced a bit of a Spring refresh for its Vaio Z laptop line, which is really more like a post-CES refresh here in the States where Spring doesn't officially kick off for about another two months. Timing and verbiage aside, Sony's tweaked Vaio Z laptops represent a minor refresh that begins with a new color option -- Carbon Fiber Silver -- and continues with an optional 4G LTE mobile broadband upgrade.
The Carbon Silver SKU joins Carbon Black, Carbon Gold, and Premium Carbon Black (matte) as color options. Inside Vaio Z laptops are upgraded Core i5 and i7 processor options and RAID 0 solid state drives (SSDs). Sony's Vaio Z line is still highlighted by Sony's Power Media Dock dr...

Asus Intros 12.5-inch B23E Ultraportable Laptop for Enterprise Users
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksASUSB23E
Asus is already an ultrabook veteran, having been the first company to unveil an ultrabook. But at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where we saw dozens of new ultrabook models from almost all other major vendors, Asus seemed content with merely announcing two new color options for its existing Zenbook lineup of ultrabooks. That said, the company didn’t announce any new notebook models either. Now that CES is well behind us,though, the company seems to have found the time to launch a new enterprise laptop, the B23E.
The B23E is essentially a 12.5-inch ultraportable targeted at enterprise users. Asus claims that all its B series enterprise notebooks are way bett...

The netbook isn’t dead, HP reckons, but it is getting marginalized into business and education environments, with the new HP Mini 1104 targeting schools and suits rather than home users. A 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 machine running Intel’s 1.6GHz dual-core Atom N2600 processor with GMA 3600 graphics and up to 2GB of RAM, the Mini 1104 promises durability and performance for those who may be frustrated by text-entry on a tablet.

Asus B23E 12.5-inch laptop, Eee PC R051BX netbook quietly revealed
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksASUSB23E
With just about as little fanfare as possible, Asus has posted information on a new ultraportable laptop, the B23E. Coming in with a 12.5-inch, 1366 x 768 screen, it's available with a variety of configuration options from an Intel Core i3 with a 320GB hard drive on up to a Core i7, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB/7200rpm drive. Although the 3.4-pound design doesn't inspire, it is arrayed with a decent set of default ports and options, including USB 3.0, HDMI, Express Card, Bluetooth, fingerprint scanner, and an SD card reader. The battery is only a three-cell, 4,400mAh and the 2-megapixel webcam certainly isn't anything special, but they are at least encased in a magnesium-aluminum alloy body. A mi...

BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 to launch February 17th?

It seems like RIM has been promising to release the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 update forever. Now, a source described by Berry Review as being "solid" is telling the site that RIM is indeed committed to launching the firmware update and says that it will be launched on February 17th. The improvements in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 bring a new e-mail client to the device along with a calendar app and a contacts list that is integrated with LinkedIn. Additionally, some new enhancements have been made to the BlackBerry Bridge. When we show...
