Apple announces first Retina display in a MacBook, 220ppi with 2880 x 1800 resolution

Apple just announced its next-generation MacBook Pro, and it comes equipped with a gorgeous 220 pixel-per-inch 2880 x 1800 display. That's quite a bit shy of the 326 ppi LCD on the iPhone 4S and the 264 ppi density of the new iPad's display, but it's still a massive improvement over the 1680 x 1050 pixels found on Apple's previous-generation clamshell. The new Retina is, as Apple marketing head Phil Shiller not-so-modestly pointed out during this morning's WWDC keynote, the "world's highest-resolution notebook display." Intel launches Ivy Bridge laptop chips, changes ultrabook requirements

MSI has announced it is now shipping Nvidia's fastest graphics card in its GT70 gaming notebook and introduced two more value-oriented gaming notebooks.

Google this week announced a second generation Chromebook model from Samsung, the Series 5 550, which dispenses with the previous generation Chromebook's Atom N570 processor and replaces it with a dual-core Celeron B867 chip sporting Sandy Bridge DNA. Intel Ultrabooks Will Get Free Wi-Fi Almost Everywhere and Auto-Update from Your Bag

The "ultrabook" designation doesn't mean too too much, since manufacturers constantly look for ways to skirt around Intel's sorta-arbitrary specs. But just being on Team Intel's gonna get a few new perks, with its new deal to get all ultrabooks free, automatic, no-login access to 5.6 million Wi-Fi hotspots.
The deal with Devicescape will use a custom DNS query to let ultrabooks log in without going through the whole process. That'll allow Intel's autoupdating Smart Connect tech to, say, refresh your email or RSS or Twitter feed while you're at a coffee shop, without ever taking your laptop out of your bag. Pretty cool!

Gigabyte is clearly hoping to carve out a name for itself in a very crowded ultraportable space; it sent us word of a media event for a new X11 laptop in its native Taipei on May 31st, just a few days ahead of Computex. The PC designer claims that the X11 will be the "lightest notebook on Earth," a pretty audacious claim considering the featherweight competition. Intel Hopes New Batteries Can Reduce Ultrabook Cost

According to a report out of Taiwan, Intel is apparently looking at Sanyo's and BAK's 16650 cylindrical battery as well as prismatic lithium-ion batteries.
The cylindrical battery seems to be the device of choice due to its low cost, but its diameter of 16 mm makes it a challenge to be built into Ultrabooks, which, by Intel's definition, need to be less than 21 mm thick. A problem may also be that the market for these batteries is controlled by Sanyo and BAK and the supply is very limited. Prismatic are more expensive, but are only 5 to 6 mm thick, while using a greater footprint of 60 x 80 mm.
