Apple has served more than 30 billion downloads globally from its App Store, and while payments to developers leveled in recent months, more than two dozen launches open a range of new opportunities for Apple’s software partners. As noted by chief executive Tim Cook during the company’s Worldwide Developer Summit earlier this month, the App Store is now available in 32 new countries beginning immediately. A full list of new markets in which the App Store has launched follows below.

Apple employees get $500 off Macs, $250 off iPads and raises

Apple employees get $500 off Macs, $250 off iPads and raises

Fulfilling a promise it made in January, Apple has reworked its employee discount program to include $500 off Mac computers and $250 off of iPads. According to 9to5Mac, this discount stacks with an existing 25 percent off which Apple employees already enjoy. Apple employees, rejoice!
While certainly a very generous offer, there do exist some specific limitations. Each employee may only use their discount once every three years and must have been employed at least 90 days. Despite those stipulations, this sounds like a solid way for those who work for Apple to maintain a modern computer throughout their years of service.

Mozilla Firefox Junior iPad browser

Mozilla Firefox Junior iPad browser

iPad fans disappointed with their browsing experience could soon have a Safari alternative from Mozilla. Mozilla has taken the wraps off a new version of its Firefox browser that it has been designing specifically for the Apple iPad, dubbed “Junior,” that the foundation says “makes browsing more fun, more ergonomic and re-thinks browser user experience from the ground up.” While this sounds ambitious, the development team at Mozilla seems to have really created a browser that’s unique to tablets rather than just simply porting its browser over from desktop or mobile platforms.
Junior is immensely simplified compared with most browsers because it only has two buttons that are strategically pl...

The patent spat between Apple and Motorola Mobility is headed back to the US courthouse, with each company expected to fight its infringement corner on June 20. Justice Richard A. Posner confirmed the hearing date, despite earlier suggestions that the case would be dismissed altogether as neither Apple nor Motorola Mobility had sufficiently established a right to relief.

Apple: Most profitable company ever in 2012, analyst says

Apple: Most profitable company ever in 2012, analyst says

Posted on Jun 18, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

As Apple’s stock price continues its roller coaster ride after topping $600 earlier this year, one industry watcher believes the stock is currently in the bargain bin. Apple can already lay claim to the most profitable quarter in history among technology companies, and Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White on Monday wrote in a note to clients that Apple is currently on track to record the most profitable year ever among publicly traded companies.
“In CY12, we believe Apple is poised to generate the highest annual net income of any publicly traded company ever,” White wrote. “On average, we estimate Apple’s net income in CY12 will be over 6x higher than the three tech companies on an ind...

HTC drops federal appeal of ITC complaint exonerating Apple, more arrows remain in the quiver

HTC drops federal appeal of ITC complaint exonerating Apple, more arrows remain in the quiver

Posted on Jun 15, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: AppleHTC

HTC was understandably upset when its first ITC complaint against Apple was tossed out. The company must have since decided that it has bigger fish to fry, as it was just granted a motion to dismiss its federal-level appeal. The choice isn't a defeat so much as an acknowledgment that other disputes are underway which stand a better chance of surviving scrutiny. As it stands, HTC already has more appeals either on deck or in progress that it will more likely want to pursue, such as the dispute over using Google's patents as well as its off-again, on-again acquisition target S3 Graphics' loss at the ITC last year. Apple, naturally, hasn't been waiting around.

Steve Wozniak Siri criticism Apple iOS 6

Steve Wozniak Siri criticism Apple iOS 6

Posted on Jun 15, 2012 by MG1

Steve Wozniak, who seems to relish needling the company that he co-founded, told Albany’s Times Union that he liked Siri a lot better before Apple purchased it in 2010. “I start telling everyone I knew and speaking around the world about how this was the future of computing, speaking things in normal ways, feeling like you’re talking to a human,” Wozniak said of the original Siri program. When asked for an example of how Siri used to be better when it was just a third-party iOS app, Wozniak said that he used to be able to get Siri to list prime numbers greater than 87, but when he asks Siri to do that now it thinks he’s talking about prime ribs. This is not the first time that Wozniak has sl...

Apple to shutter Ping in next iTunes release

Apple to shutter Ping in next iTunes release

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

According to AllThingsD, Apple is set to shutter its Ping social network with the next release of iTunes. Ping was first introduced back in September of 2010 but the music-focused social network never gained much traction. Even Apple CEO Tim Cook recently admitted that the platform wasn’t something that users “want to put a lot of energy into.”
When Apple debuted Ping, it didn’t have any integrations with other platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and users could only access it through iTunes or iOS and not through the web. It was also difficult for users to find and connect with other users, making the platform feel much more commerce-oriented than social.

Droid RAZR MAXX sales: iPhone 4S no longer king at Verizon

Droid RAZR MAXX sales: iPhone 4S no longer king at Verizon

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Given the iPhone’s popularity, it must be the top-selling smartphone on the top three major U.S. wireless carriers, right? Not so fast, says William Blair analyst Anil Doradla, who penned a note to investors this week stating that the Droid RAZR MAXX is now the best-selling smartphone on Verizon even though the iPhone maintains its top spot at AT&T and Sprint. This doesn’t mean that Doradla is down on Apple as a whole, of course, as Barron’s reports that the analyst is “unfazed” by slipping sales at Verizon and still maintains his Outperform rating on shares of Apple stock. There are some good reasons that the iPhone might not be selling as well as high-end Android handsets on Verizon, with ...

You Won't Believe How Dumb These iOS 6 Maps Mistakes Are

You Won't Believe How Dumb These iOS 6 Maps Mistakes Are

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

When you're ironing out a whole new mapping platform, like Apple is, some small details are sure to slip through the cracks. Names of streets, wrong turns, confusing oceans and deserts thousands of miles apart, the spellings of some small to... Hold it.
Yep. Apple's new Maps app confuses Greenland for the Indian Ocean, the Indian Ocean for the Arctic Ocean, the middle of Africa for the North Pacific, and the southern ocean for the North Atlantic. Which, you know, not minor details. They'll be ironed out shortly, no doubt, but those are delightfully idiotic mistakes to have gone live, especially considering some of the small details Apple has in there. Let us know if you spot any others!

Google dismissed from location tracking lawsuit, but Apple must defend itself

Google dismissed from location tracking lawsuit, but Apple must defend itself

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: AppleGoogle

Google and a handful of other defendants in a mobile location data tracking lawsuit in California have been dismissed from the case. However, the court has ruled that Apple must defend itself from certain alleged consumer rights violations in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit is the product of last year's news that Apple and others were tracking the location of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad customers and storing the data without consent. The discovery led to an uproar from users and privacy advocates. It prompted Apple to alter its software so it no longer stored the data. Apple also started asking users for permission before it could access a device's location.

iOS 6 blocks jailbreak, breaks Cydia

iOS 6 blocks jailbreak, breaks Cydia

Posted on Jun 13, 2012 by MG1

At least one hacker says iPhone fans will have to wait a while before getting an iOS 6 jailbreak. Cult of Mac reports that a member of the iPhone Dev Team says that iOS 6 is a trickier nut to crack than previous editions and that users shouldn’t “expect a jailbreak beta for a while.” Among other things, the Chronic Dev member says that iOS 6 actually breaks Cydia, the application that lets jailbroken iOS devices find and download unauthorized software and applications. The iPhone Dev Team also joined with the Chronic Dev Team and pod2g to jailbreak the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S earlier this year.
UPDATE: TechCrunch notes that iOS 6 has indeed already been jailbroken by iPhone Dev Team member Musc...

Apple announces first Retina display in a MacBook, 220ppi with 2880 x 1800 resolution

Posted on Jun 13, 2012 by MG1

Apple just announced its next-generation MacBook Pro, and it comes equipped with a gorgeous 220 pixel-per-inch 2880 x 1800 display. That's quite a bit shy of the 326 ppi LCD on the iPhone 4S and the 264 ppi density of the new iPad's display, but it's still a massive improvement over the 1680 x 1050 pixels found on Apple's previous-generation clamshell. The new Retina is, as Apple marketing head Phil Shiller not-so-modestly pointed out during this morning's WWDC keynote, the "world's highest-resolution notebook display." It's also soon to be the highest-res LCD in any household, offering three million more pixels than your 1080p HDTV. It's a bit hard to determine just how impressive this next...
