Mozilla Firefox Junior iPad browser

Mozilla Firefox Junior iPad browser

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

iPad fans disappointed with their browsing experience could soon have a Safari alternative from Mozilla. Mozilla has taken the wraps off a new version of its Firefox browser that it has been designing specifically for the Apple iPad, dubbed “Junior,” that the foundation says “makes browsing more fun, more ergonomic and re-thinks browser user experience from the ground up.” While this sounds ambitious, the development team at Mozilla seems to have really created a browser that’s unique to tablets rather than just simply porting its browser over from desktop or mobile platforms.
Junior is immensely simplified compared with most browsers because it only has two buttons that are strategically pl...

T-Mobile to conduct LTE-Advanced trials this summer in preparation for 2013 deployment

T-Mobile to conduct LTE-Advanced trials this summer in preparation for 2013 deployment

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: T-Mobile

Eager to get its LTE ducks in a row, T-Mobile announced today that it plans to begin trials of the next-gen network this summer. But here's the kicker: despite being tardy to the high-speed party, it plans on deploying true 4G in 2013, throttling ahead to the latest and greatest version known as 3GPP Release 10 -- also known as LTE-Advanced. Hitting this mark is crucial for T-Mobile, primarily because Sprint and AT&T have already announced their intentions to jump to the same speeds next year.
T-Mobile also discussed its mysterious deployment of 1900MHz 3G service in San Francisco this week. According to Dave Mayo, SVP of technology, this is part of the carrier's 4G network evolution plan: t...

Intel blows $375 million on 1,700 wireless patents from InterDigital

Intel blows $375 million on 1,700 wireless patents from InterDigital

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Intel

InterDigital, who does genuine research on wireless technology and then lives off the patent royalties, is going to sell roughly 1,700 patents to Intel for a cool $375 million. Said patents are “primarily related to 3G, LTE and 802.11 technologies.” Considering that Intel picked up Infineon’s wireless unit for $1.4 billion two years ago, it’s telling that Intel is blowing over a third of a billion dollars on what’s essentially legal documents. What’s the company going to do with all these patents? That’s a good question. Right now Intel is desperately trying to enter the mobile space. This month we saw an x86 based smartphone hit the market, but it was built by a company no one really cares ...

Facebook and Face.com have finally made an official announcement regarding their much rumored acquisition deal after nearly a month of speculation. The two companies did not disclose the cost of the deal, but insider sources previously revealed that the deal should cost Facebook about $100 million.
Israel-based Face.com specializes in mobile face recognition technology, which could be integrated into Facebook in such a way so that users can easily upload and tag photos while on the go. This feature would certainly help boost Facebook’s mobile offering, which the company is apparently hard at work to improve.

Study finds internet behaviors that could indicate depression

Study finds internet behaviors that could indicate depression

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

New research from the Missouri University of Science and Technology suggests that certain internet behaviors may indicate depression. Soon to be released in IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, the study tested participants for symptoms of depression and then monitored their internet use — not the content, but the manner in which they used the web. This data helped researchers identify behaviors (e.g. high levels of email use, file sharing, video watching, gaming, and chatting) that correlated to symptoms of depression. For example, depressive users switched between applications often, which the researchers say could "indicate difficulty concentrating."
