Nokia 808 PureView with 41MP camera is headed for America

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

The Nokia 808 PureView smartphone is coming to the United States. It’s famous for having a 41MP camera sensor that snaps amazingly high quality photos and is sure to make photographers drool.
Later this week, buyers will be able to pre-order the device on Amazon. It won’t be tied with any carrier or contracts so you’ll have to purchase it at full-retail price. Nokia is pricing the PureView at $699, which won’t be an easy sell. It’s loaded with the Symbian OS and you’ll have to make sure you have a compatible AT&T SIM Card. It works with T-Mobile’s network, too, but only at sluggish 2G speeds.
The camera technology in the 808 PureView, which people have been so excited about, is a 41MP lens t...

Nokia 808 PureView arrives fashionably late in India, 41MP in tow

Nokia 808 PureView arrives fashionably late in India, 41MP in tow

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

After initially announcing it would come in May, and then dropping a countdown red herring, the PureView is finally opening its big 808-eye in India today. The 41MP camera (and phone!) lands with a 33,899 Rupee ($600) MSRP, depending on your barter skills. The PureView might not be a spec heavyweight, with its single-core 1.3GHz chip, 512MB RAM and 360 x 640 display, but we still found it hummed along smartly with its nimble Symbian Belle OS. For those of you who've already set the cash aside, might be time to call that Indian friend.

Nokia hints something BIG is coming this weekend, possible Nokia 808 PureView launch?

Nokia hints something BIG is coming this weekend, possible Nokia 808 PureView launch?

Posted on May 31, 2012 by MG3

"Something BIG is coming this weekend. What do you think it is, Nokianatics?" This is what Nokia Philippines enigmatically posted on its Facebook page along with a quartet of seemingly random images. No further teasers, no hints, nothing more. However, it is speculated that the Nokia 808 PureView is behind this mystery.
That is so because the Nokia Lumia 900 has already been released in that part of the world, and the 808 PureView is the only big thing that Nokia has left in its arsenal. Furthermore, the aforementioned four images that accompany Nokia's post suggest that whatever is to be unveiled might have superior photographic skills.

Nokia Pureview 808 available for pre-order on Amazon UK

Posted on May 31, 2012 by MG3

The Nokia Pureview 808 is an average smartphone with a plethora of ordinary features except for one: it has a 41MP Carl Zeiss lens. Photography enthusiasts can rejoice because it’s now available for pre-order on Amazon UK.
Now hold on just a second. Is this thing really capable of snapping photos with a 41 megapixel resolution? If you look closely at Nokia’s advertising, it says that the Pureview 808 has astounding 41MP “image quality.” This means that the photos it does take have quality comparable to a 41MP photo, but in a nutshell, no it does not take 41MP photos.

Nokia working on slimmer PureView smartphones, Windows Phone model hinted

Nokia working on slimmer PureView smartphones, Windows Phone model hinted

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG2

Few things that prevent the Nokia 808 PureView from being regarded as an excellent smartphone, not just an excellent camera phone, is that it runs Symbian and that it is quite bulky by today's norms. But the design experts at Nokia appear to be hard at work towards delivering a spiced up range of PureView devices.

Nokia 808 PureView enables NFC image share, mobile payment apps to come

Nokia 808 PureView enables NFC image share, mobile payment apps to come

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Rounding off a busy day of shooting with Nokia's new imaging mistress, the company's Vesa Jutila, Head of Symbian Product Marketing, hooked us up with some more developments for the 808 PureView, specifically to do with NFC. He told us that picture sharing would be possible across devices -- not limiting itself to fellow PureView smartphones, and differentiating it from another hotly anticipated future smartphone. We'd err against using it on those full 38- or 34-megapixel images though, as they will often measure over 10MB and it could take some time. Further, Nokia's already applied for Mastercard and Visa accreditation to get those mobile wallets up and working. We're curating our own exc...

Nokia 808 Pureview bound for US

Nokia 808 Pureview bound for US

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Nokia's powerful cameraphone, the 808 PureView, launched this month in countries around the world - but not the U.S.
In fact, Nokia previously stated that they had no plans to bring the Symbian-run 808 Pureview (or any other non-Windows Phone smartphones) stateside in the future.
So it comes as a pleasant surprise that Nokia's U.S. president, Chris Weber, said that the company is trying to "figure out a way" to bring the Pureview to North American shelves.
Weber said that the phone won't be picked up by any specific U.S. carrier, but that it will be AT&T-compatible.

Nokia 808 PureView coming to the US, but don’t ask for carrier subsidy

Nokia 808 PureView coming to the US, but don’t ask for carrier subsidy

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

The 41-megapixel Nokia 808 PureView is a device we can imagine people interested in mobile photography would be eager to get, and after Nokia disappointed us by officially stating in the product page that the phone won’t arrive to the US, now it’s backtracked a bit. The 808 PureView will come to the United States, but it won’t be subsidized by carriers. Rather, it will ship unlocked.
“We’ll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months,” Nokia US President Chris Weber said.
That’s already reassuring and nice, but we’re pretty certain that even without Nokia’s help unlocked 808 PureViews would have arrived on interested retailers.

New Nokia 808 PureView promo video filmed with the phone itself

New Nokia 808 PureView promo video filmed with the phone itself

Posted on Apr 20, 2012 by MG1

Nokia has a new promo video for its upcoming 41MP cameraphone, the 808 Pureview, and it says the PR footage was shot entirely with the phone itself.
The video details all photographic capabilities of the monster sensor inside the Nokia 808 PureView, and the photo samples used are once taken with the handset also. The silent lossless zoom, fine details and the rapid focusing speeds are being showcased in preparation for the phone's launch.
It is expected to arrive some time next month, so we can't wait to take it out for a spin, and dream about the times this mindboggling hardware will be stuffed into a Nokia Windows Phone handset heading for Verizon.

Sony claims Nokia 808 PureView 41-megapixel sensor is old tech

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Sony has called the Nokia 808 PureView phone a "development announcement" rather than a consumer product and claims that its 41-megapixel camera is old technology.
The Japanese manufacturer states that it has used similar pixel zoom technology in its cameras for about a year, but does give Nokia a nod for implementing it inside a mobile phone.

Nokia's 808 PureView won't come to North America

Nokia's 808 PureView won't come to North America

Posted on Mar 06, 2012 by MG1

This doesn't come as a major surprise to us, but Nokia has confirmed that it doesn't plan to bring the 808 PureView to US or any other nearby countries. Buried deep within the device specifications page, there's a note about "global" availabilty — excluding North America. That's just as well, since Nokia stopped selling unlocked devices directly in the US last year, and no US carrier would be wiling to pick up a Symbian phone at this point. That's not even to mention the fact that Nokia confirmed last year that it would not bring any more Symbian phones to the US. Still, this phone's incredibly unique camera design was sure to attract some interest, but those people who want to give it a sho...

Nokia 803 detailed, last of the Symbian Belles

Nokia 803 detailed, last of the Symbian Belles

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

What may very well be the final Symbian device on the market has been tipped and detailed, it having what sources are saying is the largest camera sensor on a mobile phone yet. This information comes from BGR who have an exclusive source speaking on what this device will hold: a full 4-inch AMOLED display, for starters, instead of the 3.5-inch display that’d been rumored before. Next there’s an HDMI-out port, a bit of the ol’ microSIM, and NFC built in. This could be the Symbian to bring back the OS or it could be one final fabulous blast before it’s all over forever.
