Microsoft-branded smartphone rumor

Microsoft-branded smartphone rumor

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft’s first attempt at making its own mobile phones wasn’t exactly a success. In fact, it would be fair to say that the Microsoft KIN was one of the genuine flaming-bus-crash-into-an-orphanage disasters of recent mobile phone industry history. But Microsoft apparently thinks it’s older and wiser now, and it wants to try making its own phones again, according to Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund. Per Business Insider, Sherlund sent out a note today stating that Steve Ballmer and his merry band “may be working with a contract manufacturer to develop their own handset for Windows Phone 8.” What’s more, Sherman said that “it is unclear to us whether this would be a reference platform or whether...

Android Jelly Bean revealed as version 4.1 on Galaxy Nexus checkout page

Android Jelly Bean revealed as version 4.1 on Galaxy Nexus checkout page

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 by MG1

We have yet to get any confirmation from Mountain View, but it looks like Jelly Bean just got a touch more official. The as-yet-unannounced Android OS was outed as version 4.1 on the Galaxy Nexus Google Wallet checkout page. 4.1 does in fact make Jelly Bean a more incremental update than the potentially more significant Ice Cream Sandwich, from a classification perspective, at least. The operating system also, based on the checkout page above, will be coming to the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ version first -- which handsets will follow is yet to be seen. This could very well be a typo on the Wallet checkout page, but it's more likely to be an un-approved slip, giving us just a hint of sugar ahead of ...

Verizon Wireless announced that, starting today, it will bring its 4G network to new regions across the country.
The spread of 4G reaches 46 new markets this week, including cities in 22 states from Maine and Alaska to Texas, Indiana, and California.
The carrier is also expanding its existing 4G coverage in 22 of the cities where it already has a presence.
Those new coverage areas will get to enjoy Verizon's controversial new data plan.
Verizon's new offering scrapped nearly all of its existing plans in favor of the "Share Everything" plan, which caters to users who share data between up to 10 devices.

White HTC Evo 4G LTE appears in Sprint advertisement

White HTC Evo 4G LTE appears in Sprint advertisement

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 by MG1

HTC's smartphones are no stranger to white paint jobs, and it look like the new Evo 4G LTE will be no different. A silver and white version of the device has shown up in a Sprint ad, and while the carrier has not made any official announcement regarding the variant, Techno Buffalo recently reported that it is already listed in the company's inventory. The original Evo 4G was also released in white — as was the HTC One X, the Evo 4G LTE's close relative — so the new color scheme would come as no surprise. Then again, this could all just be the result of a slip up in Sprint's marketing department.

Google Play -- Android developer responses now supported in app store

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google on Thursday announced that it will begin allowing select developers to reply to users reviews on its Google Play store. “User reviews on Google Play are great for helping people discover quality apps and give feedback to developers and other potential app users,” Trevor Johns wrote on Google’s developers blog. “But what about when developers want to give feedback to their users? Sometimes a user just needs a helping hand, or perhaps a new feature has been added and the developer wants to share the good news.” The feature will be available today, initially to those with a “Top Developer badge,” and based off feedback, the feature may be offered to additional developers in the future. “...

Microsoft Xbox 360 firmware update goes live for all

Posted on Jun 21, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft has rolled out its latest firmware update to everyone. But don’t expect any monumental change to your Xbox Live experience. Yet. This is mainly an update to prepare your system for future major updates. Micosoft’s Larry Hryb, also known as Major Nelson, confirmed on his blog that the update is now mandatory for all users.
“What’s in it, you ask? Behind the scenes foundational improvement that will not be visually noticeable, but will help enable an easy update this Fall,” Hryb confirmed. There is only one real update, and that’s for Australia and New Zealand users – Bing-powered Kinect voice search has been added for those regions. Hryb also noted that a weird issue in the update m...

Google Plus low engagement beneficial

When Spinal Tap’s manager was asked whether the band was less popular because it wasn’t selling out large venues any more, he replied that the band was just as popular but that its appeal had simply “become more selective.” Google is apparently angling for something similar with its spin on Google+ engagement, as Google vice president of product Bradley Horowitz told The Guardian on Wednesday that Google actually wants there to be more friction that slows down users’ sharing over the social network.
“Friction can be a very good thing. We’ve introduced quite a bit of friction on our system,” he said, referring to the fact that users have to specify which circles they want to share with before...

Microsoft’s big week continues. The Redmond-based software — and hardware — giant on Monday unveiled its first foray into the tablet hardware market, the Microsoft Surface. Based on Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro, the Surface sets the bar high for Microsoft’s vendor partners as they prepare their own Windows 8 laptops and tablets, which will launch later this year. Moving on from tablets and pushing deeper into the mobile space, Microsoft on Wednesday took the wraps off the latest version of its smartphone operating system, Windows Phone 8.

WikiLeaks founder seeks political asylum at Ecuadorian Embassy in London

Posted on Jun 21, 2012 by MG1

The long running legal battle to extradite WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange to Sweden to face sex crime allegations took a turn on Tuesday evening after he walked into the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and requested political asylum under the United Nations Human Rights Declaration.
Assange stands accused by the Swedish government of raping one woman and sexually molesting another, both of which he has strongly denied. He was due to be extradited to Sweden in nine days after the UK Supreme Court ruled on May 30 that it was lawful and could go ahead.
Before walking into the Embassy he had been on bail and living with friends in Norfolk. The move comes just over a week after the court refused ...

Lumia 900 owner vents Windows Phone 8 frustrations, Stephen Elop responds

Posted on Jun 21, 2012 by MG1

If you've been following our Windows Phone 8 coverage today, you know that anybody who buys a Windows Phone today will not be able to upgrade to WP8 when it ships this fall. If you were an early adopter that's not such a bad deal, but if you bought a Lumia 900 oh, say, three weeks ago you might be upset -- and rightly so. And rightfully angry is Luke, who sent us an email he fired off to Nokia's Stephen Elop and AT&T's Ralph de la Vega in which he asks why he shouldn't, right now, turn around and return his phone.

Google to pay $0 in damages to Oracle, wait for appeal

After watching Judge Alsup strike down its patent and Java API infringement claims, Oracle seems to be cutting its losses, agreeing to accept $0 in damages from Google. Confused? So was the Judge, who reportedly responded to the proposal by asking, "is there a catch I need to be aware of?" No catch, but Oracle isn't giving up, stating that it's taking its case to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. If successful, the appeal could put the two firms back in Alsup's courtroom, perhaps asking for somewhere between the previously proposed $32.3 million and today's sum total of zilch. We'll let you know when the drama comes around again.

To address the immediate remarks about its Optimus laptop graphics system — which allows users to toggle between discrete and integrated graphics — Nvidia says that it has made changes in its R295 drivers that will make Linux driver developers' lives a little easier.
