NEC has unveiled its developing a new ultra slim type of battery it refers to as organic radical battery (ORB) that can be printed into 0.01-inch (0.3mm) thin circuit boards. The battery could be installed on credit cards and bendable screens, and is expected to be ready for rollout in 2013.

A 1.18-inch (3cm) square of the ORB battery will be capable of delivering a 3mAh charge. This is enough for updating a small display 2,000 times on a single charge. The charging capacity is around the same as the one on the currently massively used Lithium-Ion batteries.

Joint partnership NEC-Casio Mobile gave a preview Thursday of the Medias-badged devices it would have at Mobile World Congress as part of a major push into smartphones outside of Japan. Topping the group is an unusual dual-screen device, so far only known as the Best Cloud UX Device. NEC today introduced a new addition to AccuSync Series of value-driven desktop monitors, the 24-inch AS241W. The new panel joins the AS171, AS192, AS191WM, and AS221WM displays and shares some similar traits with its brethren, but it's the only one in the line to sport a 16:9 aspect ratio. NEC's other AccuSync models are split between square screens and 16:10 displays.

NEC to chop 10,000 workers from payroll

The axe is set to fall over at NEC Corp in Japan with just about one in 10 of its workers to be cut. NEC has announced that is set to lay off 10,000 workers as it attempts to claw its way out of the red and back into the black. One reason cited for the job losses is stiff competition posed from rivals from foreign countries such as Apple. NEC blames the poor performance and the job cuts on soft demand for its mobile phones.

Report: Quanta sues AMD over faulty chips

Quanta Computer has filed a lawsuit in a California court against Advanced Micro Devices over faulty chips used in some computers, an accusation disputed by AMD.
Quanta has accused AMD and its ATI Technologies subsidiary of selling chips that could not tolerate some heat levels, making the chips unfit for use in some NEC laptops manufactured by Quanta, according to a news report by Bloomberg. The faulty chips caused the NEC laptops to malfunction, the suit claims.
