Scientists have been taking inspiration from printers for everything from treating burns to recreating cardiac tissue. Researchers at Clemson University have perfected a way to use an ordinary inkjet printer to actually print living cells — and they've put together a how-to guide and video for the Journal of Visualized Experiments to show how it works. Starting with an HP DeskJet 500, researchers empty a normal inkjet cartridge, and then fill it with a solution of suspended cells and fluorescent matter, the combination of which they call "bio-ink." A platform is set up beneath the printer head and layered with slides to receive the output. Using a standard word processor to drive the printer...

Nokia grabs well-known webOS, Java developer from Palm

Nokia grabs well-known webOS, Java developer from Palm

Posted on Mar 01, 2012 by MG1

Nokia for the past year or so has been on a crusade to dig the company out of irrelevancy in today’s super competitive mobile business. The Finnish-based phone maker teamed up with Microsoft to jazz things up on the operating system, shifting attention slightly away from its own OS Symbian. Now the company has its sights set on acquiring some talent on the development side.
On his blog this morning, Josh Marinacci, a developer/designer for Palm, announced that he would be leaving the troubled company after two years of service. He went on to explain himself as to why he came to the decision to leave, saying:

HP reportedly planning Windows 8 tablets using Intel and Qualcomm processors

HP reportedly planning Windows 8 tablets using Intel and Qualcomm processors

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

HP CEO Meg Whitman recently told investors that the company will be shipping Windows 8 products by the end of the year, and now CNET is reporting some possible details about its tablet plans. According to the site, HP is working on at least three different Windows 8 tablets, powered by chips from Intel and Qualcomm. The two Intel models are said to utilize the chipmaker's 32nm Atom Clover Trail platform, and will come in two distinct form factors. The first is reportedly a laptop / tablet hybrid — a device type that some of HP's competitors believe in — while the second is a more traditional tablet aimed at business customers. The third product is said to be powered by a Qualcomm processor, ...

HP's first quarter earnings down 38 percent year over year

HP's first quarter earnings down 38 percent year over year

Posted on Feb 23, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: HP

HP just announced a fairly brutal (though still profitable) quarter of financial results, anchored by GAAP earnings which were down some 38 percent to $1.5 billion versus the same quarter a year prior. Revenue, meanwhile, was off just 7 percent, and HP's lumping much of the downward trend in earnings into higher "cost of sales" (the company isn't taking any hit from the wind-down of the webOS business this quarter). Recently-installed CEO Meg Whitman says that they're "taking the necessary steps to improve execution, increase effectiveness and capitalize on emerging opportunities to reassert HP's technology leadership."

HP Z1 Workstation AIO has a 27-inch flip-up screen, lets you easily open its chassis

HP Z1 Workstation AIO has a 27-inch flip-up screen, lets you easily open its chassis

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG15

It looks like HP isn't satisfied with its current workstation lineup: the company has added an all-in-one to the powerful, business-class series. It's called the Z1 Workstation, and other than desktop-grade silicon, the AIO makes a bit of a statement with its chassis. Sure, it is a bit chunky, but it makes up for that by being easy-to-access and customizable. The Z1's 27-inch IPS 2560 x 1440 display snaps open like a lid, leaving its 4 PCI express card slots (one full-sized 16x), three hard drive bays, and four memory slots laid bare for you to tinker with. The base configuration is expected to arrive in April for $1,899 with a 3.33GHz Core i3-2120 and integrated graphics. Of course, being a...

HP CEO: We’re not done with WebOS yet

HP CEO: We’re not done with WebOS yet

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

At HP’s Global Partner Conference in Las Vegas, hardly a word was spoken on their WebOS efforts in 2011. And it’s not hard to see why: the few phones and single TouchPad tablet that sprang from the acquisition of Palm bombed so badly that the only wat to recoup losses was a massive fire sale. But surprisingly, HP’s new CEO Meg Whitman didn’t seem phased: at her keynote this morning, she reiterated HP’s commitment to the WebOS platform.
“What Apple is doing with iOS is great, but it’s a closed platform,” said Whitman, after highlighting the company’s decision in December to open source WebOS. “What Google is doing with Android is great, but with their acquisition of Motorola, I fear that it m...

HP releases Android kernel for TouchPad, makes hackers' lives easier

HP releases Android kernel for TouchPad, makes hackers' lives easier

You may remember that during the TouchPad fire sale, a few slates slipped out with a rather primitive Froyo build on them. Well, HP doesn't seem to know how the tablets hit shelves with Android on board, but its decided to release the source code for the OS nonetheless. Devs had previously called on the company to hand over the code, but the request was refused since HP had never intended for TouchPads to ship with Android, and thus were not obligated to abide by the open-source requirements. As a gesture of goodwill to the community (and under a certain amount of pressure from it) the former purveyor of all things webOS has reversed course though, and let the TouchPad-specific kernel loose ...

HP releases Android kernel source for TouchPad to CyanogenMod team

HP releases Android kernel source for TouchPad to CyanogenMod team

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

When the HP TouchPad was released in the summer of 2011 it did little to impress consumers, leading to the tablet being discontinued after a mere 49 days on the market. Remaining TouchPad stock received substantial price reductions, dropping to as low as $99 dollars during a huge fire sale. Shortly after inventory ran dry, crafty hackers had announced their intention to run the Android operating system in replace of WebOS on the TouchPad, and progress thus far has been slow, with alpha versions being released that are fairly stable but have serious bugs. In an act of good will, HP has now released an Android kernel source code to the hacking community. Read on for more.
The source code appea...

If you follow the tablet market closely, you’ll be familiar with HP TouchPad that launched packing webOS and met a quick demise when sales were not good, and the tablet received some poor review scores. Some will also recall that during the TouchPad blowout sale, a few of the tablets allegedly shipped and were running Android out-of-the-box. The version of Android that those tablets were running has now been gifted from HP to the open-source geeks of the world.

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman says the company's soon-to-be open source WebOS software will eventually be better than both the Android and iOS platforms.
HP will launch the first version of the reimagined operating system in September this year after deciding to commit the storied software to the open source community.
Whitman said the result will prove to be superior to the 'closed' Apple iOS ecosystem and the undeniably 'fragmented' Android platform.
She also confirmed that the company will re-enter the tablet market, following the HP TouchPad debacle of 2011.
An open and closed case
In an interview with CRN, she said: "There is a clear vision of what we're trying to accomplish.
"There w...

Now, it’s back on sale - it costs more, but the price is still very very low at just $219.99 for the 32GB HP TouchPad.

HP: Open webOS 1.0 arriving in September, Enyo 2.0 framework free to developers today

HP: Open webOS 1.0 arriving in September, Enyo 2.0 framework free to developers today

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG1

When HP announced last month that it would open-source webOS, the outfit seemed mighty pleased (and relieved) to have finally made a definitive decision regarding the fate of its $1.2 billion software experiment. In fact, though, the company's initial announcement was light on detail, other than the fact that webOS will live on with the help of developers both inside and outside HP. Now, the company's ready to talk specifics: HP says it expects the software will be fully open-sourced by September, at which point its official name will be Open webOS 1.0. The first piece of the puzzle is arriving today in the form of the second-gen Enyo framework, a free tool that lets developers write webOS a...

Some HP Envy 15 screens display orange where red should be

Some HP Envy 15 screens display orange where red should be

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG3

If you're completely satisfied with your HP Envy 15, you might want to stop reading now. There seems to be a problem with some of the 1080p Radiance Display screens, and we're afraid it's one of those things you may not be able to unsee once you know the truth. Okay, here's the news: certain screens don't seem to be able to properly reproduce red and violet colors. There's a lengthy forum thread over at Notebook Review discussing the issue, and we've also confirmed it on our review unit (see pictures below). Some users also claim they received notebooks with excessive keyboard flex and dented USB ports, but it's the red / orange issue that has the most Envy 15 owners up in arms.
