Save your data! Netflix update for iOS brings Wi-Fi only option

Posted on Jun 01, 2012 by MG3

Remember the old days when unlimited data plans ruled the States and Apple iPhone users could watch Netflix movies to their heart's content? Now carriers like AT&T and Verizon have become so worried about clogging up their pipelines that they are even thinking about ways to charge Netflix for the bandwidth used by users of its app. Netflix has tried to make things easier for its iOS using fans by adding a Wi-Fi only option in an update to the app.

Nearly one million iOS devices jailbroken over holiday weekend

Nearly one million iOS devices jailbroken over holiday weekend

Posted on May 29, 2012 by MG3

Absinthe 2.0, the untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 5.1.1, has already been downloaded almost one million times. According to the Chronic Dev Team, 973,086 devices had been jailbroken as of Sunday evening, 211,401 of which were Apple’s newest iPad. The program, which was released to the public on Friday and runs on a computer connected to an iOS device, is compatible with A4 devices like the iPhone 3GS and iPad as well as A5 and A5X-powered devices such as the new iPad and iPhone 4. It is not compatible, however, with iPad 2 models powered by Apple’s newer 32-nanometer chipset, though this updated iPad 2 only became quietly available a few months ago.

Absinthe 2.0 hits the download wire, jailbreaks all iOS 5.1.1 devices but the 32nm iPad 2

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Absinthe's "so-easy-your-grandma-could-do-it" jailbreak tool just got an update to version 2.0, enabling support for a handful of Apple portables running iOS 5.1.1. Absinthe 2.0, which was developed by the "Jailbreak Dream Team" (Chronic-Dev and iPhone Dev) joins Redsn0w's tool, and will support all iPhone and iPad versions, with the exception of iPad2,4 -- the most recent iPad 2 variant, shipping with a 32nm A5 chip. The jailbreak tool can also be installed on iPod3,1 and 4,1 models. Assuming your iOS device is up and running with firmware 5.1.1, you can hit up the source link after the break to get your download on. AppleTV (second gen) users can get in on the fun too, with the latest vers...

Apple quietly rolls out revised iOS 5.1.1 build for GSM iPhone 4

Apple quietly rolls out revised iOS 5.1.1 build for GSM iPhone 4

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Apple updated iOS to 5.1.1 earlier this month with several minor feature additions, but the build for the GSM iPhone 4 may have needed some additional work: the company has begun distributing a new version of the upgrade. The Next Web reports that iPhone hacker iH8sn0w posted about the update on Twitter; the new version uses build number 9B208 instead of the 9B206 used in the prior version. It's not clear just what the update provides, though the timing is certainly interesting, with today's release of Absinthe providing untethered jailbreaks for all iOS devices on 5.1.1, including the new iPad. GSM iPhone 4 users that have already upgraded to 5.1.1 won't be able to receive the update over t...

Apple releases iOS 5.1.1 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad

Posted on May 08, 2012 by MG1

Apple released iOS 5.1.1 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad this afternoon. The 40-50 MB download appears to be a minor release with a handful of bug fixes, including improved reliability for taking HDR photos from the lock screen, improvements in the iPad’s ability to switch from 2G to 3G networks, bug fixes for AirPlay video playback, more reliable Safari bookmarks and Reading List syncing, and a fix for an unusual “Unable to Purchase” alert that appears after a successful transaction.
You can download the update over the air by going to Settings —> General —> Software Update or by connecting your iOS device to iTunes.

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Security researcher Gareth Wright "stumbled into" a way to make one iOS or Android device think it's logged into the Facebook account of another. Apparently, the method also works with Dropbox, The Next Web reports. By simply copying a "plist" from your iOS or Android device and pasting it into the same directory on another device (using a free Mac app like iExplorer), anyone can easily make Facebook and Dropbox (and presumably some other apps) think they are you. It's that easy. Facebook released a statement on the matter:

iOS 5.1 code shows references to LTE phone calls, FaceTime

iOS 5.1 code shows references to LTE phone calls, FaceTime

Posted on Mar 23, 2012 by MG1

Strings in the iOS 5.1 firmware make reference to 4G phone calling, and using FaceTime over 4G, notes Cydia developer Krishna Sagar. One message in the code reads, "Enabling 4G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to enable 4G?" Others refer to enabling and disabling 4G on FaceTime calls, as well as regular voice ones.
The code appears to back up regular reports that Apple is working on an LTE iPhone. More unusual is the reference to FaceTime, since even LTE-equipped iPads are still unable to make FaceTime calls over cellular networks. The restriction is typically blamed on wireless carriers, who are likely worried about bandwidth congestion as well as people opting out of higher-...

Congressmen ask devs of 34 iOS apps about user privacy

Congressmen ask devs of 34 iOS apps about user privacy

Posted on Mar 23, 2012 by MG1

In the wake of the Path address book fiasco, Congressmen Henry Waxman (D-CA) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) have followed up their initial query to Apple about privacy issues by contacting the people and companies behind 34 iOS apps. The list includes Tim Cook (again), concerning Apple's own Find My Friends, Mark Zuckerberg and Path's CEO Dave Morin, among others. The letters themselves are open for viewing on the Committee on Energy and Commerce's website, and include questions about exactly how many times the apps have been downloaded, what information they transmit back from user's devices and what happens to that data. The devs have until April 12th to respond, and while we're not sure what...

iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB

iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB

Posted on Mar 13, 2012 by MG1

While the new features found in the iOS 5.1 update were fairly minimal, one that snuck under the radar was an increase to the maximum download file size over 3G/4G networks. The new version of iOS allows downloads of up to 50 MBs to be conducted over cellular networks, a fairly sizable increase from the previous 20MB limit.
Accounting for the increase is Apple’s new iPad, which is slated to launch on Friday. The new iPad features an HD Retina display, which will drive application file sizes up as developers build more intensive programs to support the new display and the Retina graphics the devices are capable of providing. Users of the AT&T, Verizon, and upcoming Sprint variants of the iPad...

Redsn0w jailbreaking tool updated to support iOS 5.1

Redsn0w jailbreaking tool updated to support iOS 5.1

Posted on Mar 09, 2012 by MG1

It hadn’t even been 24 hours since Apple released iOS 5.1, and the hacking community has already let loose the first tethered jailbreaking tool for the updated OS. According to Redmond Pie, the iPhone Dev Team has updated Redsn0w to allow users to jailbreak their iOS 5.1 devices. The jailbreak is tethered, however, so users will be required to connect their devices to a computer each time they are powered on. The exploit works for all devices running iOS 5.1 with the exception of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Bug in iOS 5.0.1 allows bypassing of lock screen

Bug in iOS 5.0.1 allows bypassing of lock screen

Posted on Feb 23, 2012 by MG1

A flaw demonstrated in a YouTube video (seen below) demonstrates a difficult-to-access but reproducible bug in iOS 5.0.1 that can allow unauthorized users to bypass a lock screen on GSM-based iPhones and access recent contacts, make calls or even use FaceTime, iPhoneIslam reports. The hack revolves around trying to return a missed call while the sim card is taken out and re-inserted repeatedly (or in an area with no network coverage).
After multiple tries at returning a missed call without network coverage or the SIM, the iPhone will unlock itself to the phone application (and the SIM can be re-inserted or the phone taken to a location with network coverage). Once in the phone app, users can...
