Sprint's Palm C40: the Pre 2 that never made it

Take a look through the trousers of time at what might have been; a Palm Pre 2 on Sprint. WebOSNation managed to grab the very rare prototype from a Palm employee and it fortunately worked on the Now Network without the need for any screwdrivers or warranty busting. Despite its second-hand status, the phone cheerfully handled webOS 2.2.4, albeit without a licensed webOS Doctor. Aside from the swap to a CDMA radio, the rest of phone hardware chimes with the Verizon version that did arrive. Google snags the webOS Enyo team, HP says open source plans are still on schedule

At one time the Enyo app framework was supposed to help webOS run faster and on a wider variety of devices, but as HP continues to struggle, reports have surfaced from The Verge and AllThingsD that much of the team behind it, including leader Matthew McNulty, has been hired away by Google. Numbering a half dozen or so, the immediate danger is the effect this might have on HP's efforts to open source webOS, but in a statement the company indicated it remains on track and will stick to the roadmap it announced in January. Less clear is what these employees might end up working on for Google, although Enyo's focus on web apps and HTML5 suggests the possibility they'll end up working on ChromeOS...

Nokia grabs well-known webOS, Java developer from Palm

Nokia for the past year or so has been on a crusade to dig the company out of irrelevancy in today’s super competitive mobile business. The Finnish-based phone maker teamed up with Microsoft to jazz things up on the operating system, shifting attention slightly away from its own OS Symbian. Now the company has its sights set on acquiring some talent on the development side.
On his blog this morning, Josh Marinacci, a developer/designer for Palm, announced that he would be leaving the troubled company after two years of service. He went on to explain himself as to why he came to the decision to leave, saying:

Open webOS Iris browser released: 40k Enyo downloads to-date

HP’s open-sourcing of webOS continues today, with the release of the underlying Isis web browser along with a governance model and more of the Enyo components developers will need to create their own webOS devices and apps. Enyo has already been downloaded 40,000 times in the three weeks since its release, the team says, and now there’s the Isis Project, “a fast, standards-compliant web browser engine,” to go along with it.

HP updates webOS for TouchPad, Pre 2 and 3

HP has released new OS updates for its TouchPad tablet and Pre 2 and Pre 3 smartphones. The TouchPad gets webOS v.3.0.5, which offers faster switching in Calendar views, IM indicators, and quicker scrolling in Email. It also gets support for HTTP Live Streaming, the ability to toggle auto-correct on and off, and a handy typing shortcut - two consecutive spaces will now be entered as one space and a period, something that we have seen on many other smartphone and tablet systems. HP CEO Meg Whitman said a final decision will be made on what the company will do with webOS within the next two weeks. This won’t be like the last time she said they’ll make a decision on webOS, I’m guessing.
Asked by a French newspaper about when the company will make a decision on the mobile platform, Whitman reportedly said, “We should announce our decision in the next two weeks. This is not an easy decision, because we have a team of 600 people which is in limbo. We need to have another operating system.”

HP released its Q4 2011 financial results this afternoon, and while the company did better than Wall Street expected it to in total, it still managed to lose billions of dollars on the webOS platform. Last year, HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion, and today the company admitted how much more money it sunk into webOS this year, only to leave it high and dry halfway through.
According to the company figures, HP spent $3.3 billion on the remainder of Palm and webOS this year, even though it decided that it would discontinue webOS smartphones and tablets this summer. HP is reportedly holding a meeting Tuesday night during which it may decide the fate of its webOS mobile platform, The Verge reported on Tuesday. The meeting will take place after the market closes and will be led by CEO Meg Whitman at 4:30 p.m. PST. Amazon reportedly has Palm in its sights and is super close to pulling the trigger on a deal that could benefit both it and Hewlett Packard. Let's face it, HP screwed the pooch with its Palm acquisition with its 180 on webOS hardware, and even though the company claims it's committed to focusing on webOS software, that was never the sole intention. Earlier this month a pair of HP memos surfaced saying that the world’s largest PC maker is going to split the Palm team. The software folks will join the Office of Strategy and Technology under Shane Robison, while the hardware guys would join Stephen DeWitt in the Personal Systems Group that we’re all expecting to either be spun off or sold. Today HP announced that they’re going to lay off some webOS people, and “sources close to the company” have told The Wall Street Journal that the number of people who will have to find a new job will be somewhere around 525. During the IFA trade show in Berlin on Friday, Samsung Electronics CEO Choi Gee Sung addressed rumors and speculation that Samsung was considering purchasing webOS from HP. Choi said Samsung would “never” make the purchase, according to Bloomberg. “It’s not right that acquiring an operating system is becoming a fashion,” he said. Things haven't been exactly flourishing at HP's webOS division in the last year since the company acquired Palm as reception for both the HP Veer and the HP TouchPad has been lukewarm. And now a major shuffle at the top executive level aims to bring change: HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS replacing Jon Rubinstein, who will now “assume a product innovation role.” But that's not all – HP seems to be also ditching the name Palm completely by renaming the division to “webOS Global Business Unit.”
