Google snags the webOS Enyo team, HP says open source plans are still on schedule

Google snags the webOS Enyo team, HP says open source plans are still on schedule

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG2

At one time the Enyo app framework was supposed to help webOS run faster and on a wider variety of devices, but as HP continues to struggle, reports have surfaced from The Verge and AllThingsD that much of the team behind it, including leader Matthew McNulty, has been hired away by Google. Numbering a half dozen or so, the immediate danger is the effect this might have on HP's efforts to open source webOS, but in a statement the company indicated it remains on track and will stick to the roadmap it announced in January. Less clear is what these employees might end up working on for Google, although Enyo's focus on web apps and HTML5 suggests the possibility they'll end up working on ChromeOS...

HP’s open-sourcing of webOS continues today, with the release of the underlying Isis web browser along with a governance model and more of the Enyo components developers will need to create their own webOS devices and apps. Enyo has already been downloaded 40,000 times in the three weeks since its release, the team says, and now there’s the Isis Project, “a fast, standards-compliant web browser engine,” to go along with it.

HP: Open webOS 1.0 arriving in September, Enyo 2.0 framework free to developers today

HP: Open webOS 1.0 arriving in September, Enyo 2.0 framework free to developers today

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG1

When HP announced last month that it would open-source webOS, the outfit seemed mighty pleased (and relieved) to have finally made a definitive decision regarding the fate of its $1.2 billion software experiment. In fact, though, the company's initial announcement was light on detail, other than the fact that webOS will live on with the help of developers both inside and outside HP. Now, the company's ready to talk specifics: HP says it expects the software will be fully open-sourced by September, at which point its official name will be Open webOS 1.0. The first piece of the puzzle is arriving today in the form of the second-gen Enyo framework, a free tool that lets developers write webOS a...

HP blew $3.3 billion killing Palm and webOS

HP blew $3.3 billion killing Palm and webOS

Posted on Nov 22, 2011 by MG1

HP released its Q4 2011 financial results this afternoon, and while the company did better than Wall Street expected it to in total, it still managed to lose billions of dollars on the webOS platform. Last year, HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion, and today the company admitted how much more money it sunk into webOS this year, only to leave it high and dry halfway through.
According to the company figures, HP spent $3.3 billion on the remainder of Palm and webOS this year, even though it decided that it would discontinue webOS smartphones and tablets this summer. The company did bring in $200 million from the firesale of the TouchPad, but all of those sales were at a loss, so that can't really ...

HP may decide fate of webOS tonight

HP may decide fate of webOS tonight

Posted on Nov 09, 2011 by MG1

HP is reportedly holding a meeting Tuesday night during which it may decide the fate of its webOS mobile platform, The Verge reported on Tuesday. The meeting will take place after the market closes and will be led by CEO Meg Whitman at 4:30 p.m. PST. According to Reuters, HP has been toying with the idea of selling the unit and possible suitors include Amazon, Intel, Oracle, Research In Motion and IBM. The potential sale will likely fetch far less than the $1.2 billion that HP paid to acquire Palm in 2010. HP originally said it was killing off webOS hardware in August, and recent reports have suggested HP will soon put the final nail in the webOS coffin and subsequently lay off 500 webOS emp...

Amazon Reportedly Interested in Buying Palm

Amazon Reportedly Interested in Buying Palm

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

Amazon reportedly has Palm in its sights and is super close to pulling the trigger on a deal that could benefit both it and Hewlett Packard. Let's face it, HP screwed the pooch with its Palm acquisition with its 180 on webOS hardware, and even though the company claims it's committed to focusing on webOS software, that was never the sole intention. It's not surprising HP is shopping Palm, but will Amazon make a move?

HP cutting over 500 webOS jobs, hopes to make money off webOS

HP cutting over 500 webOS jobs, hopes to make money off webOS

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

Earlier this month a pair of HP memos surfaced saying that the world’s largest PC maker is going to split the Palm team. The software folks will join the Office of Strategy and Technology under Shane Robison, while the hardware guys would join Stephen DeWitt in the Personal Systems Group that we’re all expecting to either be spun off or sold. Today HP announced that they’re going to lay off some webOS people, and “sources close to the company” have told The Wall Street Journal that the number of people who will have to find a new job will be somewhere around 525. Here’s the exact wording an HP spokesperson used:
“As communicated on August 18, HP will discontinue the development of webOs devi...

Samsung will 'never' buy webOS, CEO says

Samsung will 'never' buy webOS, CEO says

Posted on Sep 05, 2011 by MG1

During the IFA trade show in Berlin on Friday, Samsung Electronics CEO Choi Gee Sung addressed rumors and speculation that Samsung was considering purchasing webOS from HP. Choi said Samsung would “never” make the purchase, according to Bloomberg. “It’s not right that acquiring an operating system is becoming a fashion,” he said. Samsung Mobile already has its own mobile operating system called bada and just released version 2.0. It also sells smartphones running Android and Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. HP, which recently announced that it is ostensibly killing off the mobile operating system, has been working with other technology firms to license webOS. While Samsung may not buy web...

HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS, Rubinstein to focus on product innovation

HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS, Rubinstein to focus on product innovation

Posted on Jul 13, 2011 by MG1

Things haven't been exactly flourishing at HP's webOS division in the last year since the company acquired Palm as reception for both the HP Veer and the HP TouchPad has been lukewarm. And now a major shuffle at the top executive level aims to bring change: HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS replacing Jon Rubinstein, who will now “assume a product innovation role.” But that's not all – HP seems to be also ditching the name Palm completely by renaming the division to “webOS Global Business Unit.”
DeWitt is a sales guy – he has been credited for improving sales and profitability of HP's Personal Systems Group, but he will also be responsible for overseeing R&D and marketing. HP will also try...

HP confirms it's in talks about licensing webOS, Samsung tipped as a possibility

HP confirms it's in talks about licensing webOS, Samsung tipped as a possibility

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

HP CEO Leo Apotheker has already indicated that he's totally open to licensing webOS to other companies, and he's now confirmed that HP has, in fact, been in talks with a "number of companies" about that possibility. Not surprisingly, he didn't get much more specific than that, and went some way to dampen expectations a bit, saying that "there is no time pressure to do this." According to Bloomberg, however, "three people with knowledge of the discussions" say that Samsung is one of the companies HP has had talks with, and one said that the company is specifically interested in possibly using webOS for its Galaxy Tab tablets. HP's Jon Rubinstein also dished a bit more on the subject to This ...

2 reasons why HP and Amazon should team-up to drive webOS forward

2 reasons why HP and Amazon should team-up to drive webOS forward

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

I’ve been thinking a lot about the webOS prospects recently. You may’ve read my rant on why Nokia should’ve picked Palm/HP’s rather than Microsoft’s mobile platform and now I want to make a case why HP should pitch Amazon to make a webOS-based tablet and how the two companies can help drive webOS forward. I have two reasons why a strategic deal between HP and Amazon could be beneficial for both companies.
