HP confirms reorganization, PC and printer groups to merge

Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday confirmed earlier reports of a major reorganization within the company. The firm plans to merge its Personal Systems Group, responsible for PCs, with its Imaging and Printing Group. Clemson researchers show how to print cells with your classic HP inkjet

Scientists have been taking inspiration from printers for everything from treating burns to recreating cardiac tissue. Researchers at Clemson University have perfected a way to use an ordinary inkjet printer to actually print living cells — and they've put together a how-to guide and video for the Journal of Visualized Experiments to show how it works. Starting with an HP DeskJet 500, researchers empty a normal inkjet cartridge, and then fill it with a solution of suspended cells and fluorescent matter, the combination of which they call "bio-ink." HP posts fix for LaserJet exploits

HP has posted a new driver update for its web-connected and networked LaserJet printers in an attempt to plug a malware explot. The was brought on after findings from Columbia University were revealed late in November. While no customers have reported attacks, HP claimed, the firmware upgrade would prevent them from happening in the first place.
HP still recommends common-sense tactics to lock down printers, such as securing putting them behind firewalls and disabling remote firmware uploads on exposed printers. Updating the drivers should make the printers secure against other currently known attacks as well.

HP LaserJet printers pose massive security risk, say Columbia University researchers

MSNBC is reporting a security flaw that could affect millions of HP LaserJet printers. According to Ang Cui and Salvatore Stolfo of Columbia University, the issue stems from the fact that the HP LaserJet printers tested do not require a signature or certificate to identify the source of remote software updates. Knowing this, Cui and Stolfo are able to exploit the fact that every time a LaserJet accepts a new job it checks for an included software update.

Scanners are a bit of a running joke around the Giz office. "If you post a scanner, you're probably fired," our editors demi-joke. So it's sorta distressing news that HP's got a cheap 3D scanner that's actually kind of awesome.
HP's TopShot Laserjet Pro M275 works by taking six images of an object and compiling them into one 3D image. It also connects to wireless networks, so it can send the image wherever as soon as it's scanned, and it's got AirPrint, which lets you print directly from an iPad, Pod, or Phone.
