The HP TouchPad was the most sought after tablet after the company kicked off a fire sale bringing its price down to just $100, but if you didn’t act quick chances are you couldn’t find it anywhere. Now, it’s back on sale - it costs more, but the price is still very very low at just $219.99 for the 32GB HP TouchPad.
This is a one-day deal on Woot! so again, you’d better make up your mind and get it soon, as it won’t last.
The TouchPad is originally running on webOS, but if you don’t like the platform that is about to get open sourced soon, you can use the efforts of the CyanogenMod team and get ICS on it. The custom ROM got released in its early alpha version, but most of the things are wor...

HP: Open webOS 1.0 arriving in September, Enyo 2.0 framework free to developers today

HP: Open webOS 1.0 arriving in September, Enyo 2.0 framework free to developers today

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG1

When HP announced last month that it would open-source webOS, the outfit seemed mighty pleased (and relieved) to have finally made a definitive decision regarding the fate of its $1.2 billion software experiment. In fact, though, the company's initial announcement was light on detail, other than the fact that webOS will live on with the help of developers both inside and outside HP. Now, the company's ready to talk specifics: HP says it expects the software will be fully open-sourced by September, at which point its official name will be Open webOS 1.0. The first piece of the puzzle is arriving today in the form of the second-gen Enyo framework, a free tool that lets developers write webOS a...

Some HP Envy 15 screens display orange where red should be

Some HP Envy 15 screens display orange where red should be

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG3

If you're completely satisfied with your HP Envy 15, you might want to stop reading now. There seems to be a problem with some of the 1080p Radiance Display screens, and we're afraid it's one of those things you may not be able to unsee once you know the truth. Okay, here's the news: certain screens don't seem to be able to properly reproduce red and violet colors. There's a lengthy forum thread over at Notebook Review discussing the issue, and we've also confirmed it on our review unit (see pictures below). Some users also claim they received notebooks with excessive keyboard flex and dented USB ports, but it's the red / orange issue that has the most Envy 15 owners up in arms.

HP Mini 1104 insists the netbook isn’t dead

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG1

The netbook isn’t dead, HP reckons, but it is getting marginalized into business and education environments, with the new HP Mini 1104 targeting schools and suits rather than home users. A 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 machine running Intel’s 1.6GHz dual-core Atom N2600 processor with GMA 3600 graphics and up to 2GB of RAM, the Mini 1104 promises durability and performance for those who may be frustrated by text-entry on a tablet.

HP updates webOS for TouchPad, Pre 2 and 3

HP updates webOS for TouchPad, Pre 2 and 3

Posted on Jan 14, 2012 by MG1

HP has released new OS updates for its TouchPad tablet and Pre 2 and Pre 3 smartphones. The TouchPad gets webOS v.3.0.5, which offers faster switching in Calendar views, IM indicators, and quicker scrolling in Email. It also gets support for HTTP Live Streaming, the ability to toggle auto-correct on and off, and a handy typing shortcut - two consecutive spaces will now be entered as one space and a period, something that we have seen on many other smartphone and tablet systems. The update is going out now over-the-air.
As for HP's smartphones, the Pre 2 (unlocked and AT&T/Verizon variants) and the unlocked Pre 3, the company has bumped up its OS to v2.2.4. The update brings improvements with...

HP TouchPad getting Ice Cream Sandwich soon, courtesy of CyanogenMod

HP TouchPad getting Ice Cream Sandwich soon, courtesy of CyanogenMod

Posted on Jan 14, 2012 by MG1

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread port for the HP TouchPad, courtesy of CyanogenMod, breathed some new life into an otherwise dying tablet. It turned it into a fully working Android slate and blessed it with the multitude of apps available on the Android Market. However, team Cyanogen is not done with the HP TouchPad just yet.
What you will see in the video below is a demonstration of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich working on an HP TouchPad. And for an early build, it runs pretty good, we must say. Almost every single one of the tablet's features are in a working state at this time, with the camera functionality and video playback being the only major things that need to be made functional. Once t...

HP's Got a Crazy-slim Laptop Called the Spectre

HP's Got a Crazy-slim Laptop Called the Spectre

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

It's hard to go back to work after a few days off, but HP is sure coming back with a bang. The company this week leaked a video to Engadget that shows an incredibly thin laptop that's believed to be the newest Envy and the latest notebook to join HP's Ultrabook line. The video itself gives away little in the way of information, however, with CES only a week away, it's likely that HP plans to share more about this device in Las Vegas in just a few day's time.

HP outs Compaq L2311c docking monitor, LV1911 and LV2011 budget displays

HP outs Compaq L2311c docking monitor, LV1911 and LV2011 budget displays

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

The last time HP unveiled a monitor it was chasing gamers looking for a little 3D on a budget, but this time around, it's got business users on the brain. Specifically, the kind of workers who spend a lot of time away from the office, or perhaps share a workspace with others. That's the idea behind the 23-inch Compaq L2311c Notebook Docking Monitor, which connects to laptops via USB. That same cable will also transmit video, though even HP will admit you'll get far better results if you use USB 3.0 instead of 2.0. Taking a tour of the monitor itself, you'll find a four-port USB hub and VGA socket, along with a 720p webcam, which should pair nicely with HP's bundled MyRoom software. The 1080p...

HP Unwraps Omni 27 All-in-One PC and HPE h9 Phoenix Gaming System Ahead of CES

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

Most vendors are using the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as a launchpad for new products, but a select few are tipping their hand ahead of the convention. Hewlett-Packard is one of them, presumably because it's saving CES for its big Spectre Ultrabook reveal. In the meantime, HP has decided to share a handful of new systems, including its first 27-inch all-in-one (AIO) PC and a Phoenix gaming system the OEM claims is the "most powerful HP Pavilion PC to date."

Leaks: webOS struggled with poor staff, fundamental design

Leaks: webOS struggled with poor staff, fundamental design

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

New scoops both public and private have suggested that Palm, and later HP, may have ultimately had hurdles at the corporate level, not just technical, to ever challenging Apple or Google. WebOS didn't have either the needed management or engineers to bring it to completion, a New York Times source said, and there were few WebKit-savvy developers weren't already working on iOS or Android. This was compounded by a rush to finish the OS in nine months, which required taking shortcuts such as skipping proper APIs (app programming interfaces) until later, hurting the ability for third-party developers to sign on.

HP's supposed asking price for Palm and webOS? a laughable $1.2 billion

HP's supposed asking price for Palm and webOS? a laughable $1.2 billion

Posted on Dec 29, 2011 by MG1

According to Venture Beat, HP tried to sell webOS and Palm, but couldn’t find a buyer willing to pay HP’s exorbitant asking price of $1.2 billion. HP apparently wanted to reduce its losses by selling Palm at the same price it paid for the company back in 2010.
This value might be reasonable if HP actually did something to improve the platform, but, sadly, the company failed to do anything significant with webOS. HP released the Pre 3 and the Veer, two lackluster handsets that failed to excite consumers. The Touchpad took the retail world by storm, but only after HP dropped the price of the tablet to a rock bottom $99. The Touchpad launched with a starting price tag of $499 for the 16 GB mode...

HP posts fix for LaserJet exploits

HP posts fix for LaserJet exploits

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Imaging DevicesHP

HP has posted a new driver update for its web-connected and networked LaserJet printers in an attempt to plug a malware explot. The was brought on after findings from Columbia University were revealed late in November. While no customers have reported attacks, HP claimed, the firmware upgrade would prevent them from happening in the first place.
HP still recommends common-sense tactics to lock down printers, such as securing putting them behind firewalls and disabling remote firmware uploads on exposed printers. Updating the drivers should make the printers secure against other currently known attacks as well.

HP Pre 3 gets updated to webOS 2.2.4 to iron out some annoying bugs

HP Pre 3 gets updated to webOS 2.2.4 to iron out some annoying bugs

Posted on Dec 22, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesHPPre3

It’s hard to imagine how many units of the HP Pre 3 are in existence throughout the world, but nevertheless, those fortunate enough to own a piece of webOS history are being treated to a rare software update.
Updating the handset to webOS 2.2.4, the maintenance update brings nothing more than some of the customary bug fixes to improve its usability. From the sound of it, the new update sizes up at 29MB for European Pre 3 owners, 10MB for the AT&T capable one, and 9MB for those who managed to scoop the Verizon one. Also included in the list for the update, are those who sport the unlocked version of the GSM Palm Pre 2.
