Cisco CEO says Huawei doesn't 'always play by the rules' of IP and security

In a discussion with the Wall Street Journal, Cisco CEO John Chambers identified his company's biggest competitor: Huawei. Piling on to concerns that have already been expressed — and acted on — by the US government, Australian government, and even Symantec, Chambers said Huawei was a company that doesn't "always play by the rules, but you have to adjust to the markets that you're in." Huawei's image has been increasingly under fire of late, and Chamber's suggestion that both customers and governments "know who who they can trust and where there are challenges" looks like he's taking an opportunity to capitalize on concerns that Huawei can't be trusted when it comes to respecting intellectua...

Toray unveils new self-repairing film for devices, fixes scratches in under 10 seconds

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Toray's advanced film department has finished its new self-cure coating and is set to start using it as a decorative layer on a series of as-yet unannounced notebooks. Fortunately, the company is already chasing down more pervasive uses on smartphones and touch-panels. The science involves a wet coating method that adds a special recovering layer to PET film. Alongside that mutant healing factor, the layer responsible also throws in some elastic and cushioning properties. During Toray's demonstration (what, no video?) scratches made with a metal brush apparently repaired themselves, resulting in the rehabilitated glossy surface you see above. According to the Japanese manufacturer, the abili...

Anonymous says it is behind an attack which brought down the government's official Home Office website this weekend.
The Hacktivist group is said to have used a simple denial of service attack, which it had first announced via Twitter on Wednesday, proclaiming it would be attacking UK Government websites every Saturday.
Following the successful take-down, a triumphant Anonymous wrote on Twitter: "TANGO DOWN - http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk For your draconian surveillance proposals! Told you to #ExpectUs!"

IMDb for Android update adds 720p trailers

IMDb for Android update adds 720p trailers

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

The official IMDb app for Android has been updated to support streaming high definition trailers. Users can now choose between 720p, 480p, and "standard resolution," and have the option to set independent quality rates for Wi-Fi and mobile data. There's not much else going in the update other than the new streaming options, but IMDb does say its taken care of a few bugs as well. Either way, it makes a fine alternative to iOS's iTunes Movie Trailers app for Android users. So, what will be the first trailer you check out on the new app? We know what our choice was.

The MegaUpload execs who were jailed in New Zealand have hired law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan along with lawyer Andrew Shapiro to represent them in their upcoming legal defense, CNET revealed on Friday. Shapiro, part of the law firm, is known for successfully defending YouTube from Viacom in a high-profile case back in 2010. The firm is one of the best in the country, according to MegaUpload attorney Ira Rothken. The new hires will have their hands full as they try to defend their clients against criminal conspiracy charges that are said to have cost copyright owners over $500 million in damages.

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Security researcher Gareth Wright "stumbled into" a way to make one iOS or Android device think it's logged into the Facebook account of another. Apparently, the method also works with Dropbox, The Next Web reports. By simply copying a "plist" from your iOS or Android device and pasting it into the same directory on another device (using a free Mac app like iExplorer), anyone can easily make Facebook and Dropbox (and presumably some other apps) think they are you. It's that easy. Facebook released a statement on the matter:

Google founder snapped wearing augmented reality glasses

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been photographed wearing the company’s much talked about Project Glass Augmented Reality specs.
Confirming they are very much the real deal, Brin posed for pictures with blogger Robert Scoble, at a charity dinner for, somewhat ironically, the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
Brin was quick to inform Scoble that the glasses were very much a prototype, though Scoble said he saw a blue light flash to the right of Brin’s eye which he deemed to be Brin reading his Google+ profile. We assume he was joking.

In exchange for $168, 544 in kickbacks, a 46-year-old former researcher at Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) has been arrested in Korea, and 11 other employees detained, for leaking Samsung's "small mask scanning" AMOLED display tech to the competition.
Everybody wants in on the AMOLED gravy train, and the researcher, who left for a rival company in November after being passed for promotion, reportedly also tried to shop the goods to Chinese display makers.
That might explain the sudden accomplishments of a few Chinese screen manufacturers we told yo about not long ago, resulting in not only ramped up AMOLED production, but reportedly also building factories for next-gen OLED technologies, which...

Microsoft is still directly funding app developers

Microsoft is still directly funding app developers

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

Microsoft might already have over 80,000 applications in the Windows Phone Marketplace, but when the number grows past a couple of tens of thousands, what starts to matter is not quantity, but quality. And for some of the must-have apps that could make or break a Windows Phone handset, Microsoft is still directly funding developers.
It could cost Redmond somewhere between $60,000 and $600,000 for some of the most popular apps out there. For example, Microsoft approached Foursquare and offered it funding to make its app available on Windows Phone. Foursquare business development head Holger Luedorf admits that if it wasn’t for that incentive, the company would “probably not” have built a vers...

Google activating 850,000 Android devices every day

Google activating 850,000 Android devices every day

Filed in: Google

It has been a year since Larry Page took over as CEO of Google. In a letter he posted recently, Page listed off a number of figures pertaining to the performance of several Google products, including Android. Page revealed that there are now over 850,000 Android devices being activated on a daily basis, saying that the OS was "on fire." Don't confuse that with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's famous "burning platform" letter, though.
850,000 daily activations represents an increase of 150k activations per day from the 700,000 figure that Page revealed in January of this year.

Internet Explorer trumps Chrome, Firefox, Opera in battery test

Internet Explorer trumps Chrome, Firefox, Opera in battery test

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Internet Explorer isn't the fastest or most featured-packed browser around, but it might be the most power efficient. Hoping to determine which software would give his aging desktop replacement the longest battery life, Ciprian Adrian Rusen put IE9, IE10, Chrome 18, Firefox 11 and Opera 11.62 to the test, and both of Microsoft's offerings had a clear edge on competitors.
All of the browsers were benchmarked with Peacekeeper in their default state on a fresh copy of Windows 7 -- except the IE10 beta, which is only available for Windows 8. The machine in question is a two and a half year old HP Pavilion dv7 2185dx with a 2GHz Core 2 Quad Q9000, a Radeon HD 4650 and 6GB of DDR2 RAM. It was conf...

Touted to create a “free signature hub experience for catch-up TV services,” Nokia TV will be introduced to the Lumia users in the coming weeks, allowing them to browse or search through the available catalogues of catch-up TV services from major local broadcasters and then stream a chosen show directly to their phone. Best of all, sign up and/or registration won’t bre required with the Finnish company relying on the broadcasters’ existing internet TV business models (and user base).

Apple makes second attempt at Trojan Java block

Apple does not specify what changes have been made between the two versions, and in fact the related support documentation still refers to the initial release. Still, if you’re running Lion then you should update to the latest iteration as soon as possible.
The other suggestion is that Mac users – and their Windows counterparts, for that matter – disable Java on their computers. F-Secure gives instructions on how to do that in OS X, but it’s generally a case of going to Applications > Utilities > Java Preferences and then deselecting anything showing up under the “General” tab.
