Rob Schmitz is the chief of American Public Media’s Marketplace China bureau and he recently got in the limelight by taking a big part in exposing the lies of Mike Dorsay in its “Agony and ecstasy of Steve Jobs.” He appeared on This American Life, and his involvement got him direct and very rare access inside Apple’s Foxconn factories.
Schmitz is preparing a bigger piece about the conditions of workers he saw and while generally he describes their job as very mundane and talks about some issues with supervisors, he reassures us that the Foxconn factory looks more like a college campus rather than a slave camp.

'Anonymous' plans bigger and more serious attacks on Chinese government

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

The hacker group “Anonymous operations” plans to launch further attacks on Chinese government-run websites to protest what it believes to be strict and unfair laws. The loosely knit group launched various cyberattacks on China’s goverment last week and warned that further attacks were on the horizon. “First we want to alert the Chinese government that we aren’t afraid, and we are going to show the truth and fight for justice,” Anonymous hacker “f0ws3r” said to Reuters, adding that more serious attacks are coming against Chinese websites. “Yes, we are planning more attacks, a few at a time,” the hacker said. Tim Cook received $378 million for 2011 but will have to stay at Apple to collect most of it

Sure, Apple CEO Tim Cook is rich, but you won't see him with the deep pocketed crew on Shark Tank; at least, not yet. According to the New York Times, $376 million of the $378 million that Cook received for his performance last year was awarded in the form of a one-time stock grant. But before Cook can start dialing his broker, the grant does not fully vest unless Cook stays with Apple for ten years. According to the Times, half the grant vests in 2016 while the remainder vests in 2021.
The CEO's 2011 salary of $900,000 would make most of us very happy, but is below the median pay for a CEO in the States which is a whopping $14.4 million. With other compensation, the Apple CEO took home $1.8...

After about 3 months of looking at a WAP-like mobile twitter web page, if seems our article from 2 days ago, provoked by Joshua Topolsky’s uninformed rant about the quality of IE9 Mobile, did generate some results.
A few hours ago we were contacted by Michael Ducker, Product Manager for Mobile Web at Twitter, asking about the issue. We explained what we knew of the CSS files having the incorrect MIME type, contrary to HTML standards, and it seems not long after all the problems have been fixed, as the page it now rendering properly not only on IE9 desktop but also in the mobile browser.

Walmart Nokia Lumia 900s now shipping

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

Its pretty annoying when you pre-order a phone and it arrives after it becomes available in stores. While AT&T buyers did not have this problem, and in fact had their handsets 2 days before general availability Amazon handsets only shipped today, suggesting arrival tomorrow.
Good news for buyers at WalMart, where the handset was also selling at extremely low prices, is that their phones are now also on the way, shipping from Texas. Hopefully they will also show up on your doorstep early tomorrow.

HTC One S to launch via T-Mobile on April 25th according to training slides

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

Carriers just don't throw a device on the floor and say to the reps, "go sell it." There is training involved as the reps learn all they can about a specific device. Apparently, T-Mobile reps have just through a presentation on the HTC One S and leaked shots of some of the slides used in the training session show that the nation's third largest carrier will be launching the device on April 25th. This dovetails with earlier reports that the phone would be launching late this month.

The TZ77XE4 plays nice with both 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) and 2nd generation (Sandy Bridge) processors in a socket 1155 package (don't try plunking your Sandy Bridge-E processor into one of these boards, they require a socket 2011 motherboard).

Apple is rumoured to be working on one. HTC and LG already have one. Yet it seems Samsung has no plans to follow suit by introducing 3D technology to its smartphone range.
Speculation had been rife that the new Samsung Galaxy S III might house some kind of 3D technology when it arrives later this year be it a display, camera or both.
In terms of a 3D display Samsung has vehemently denied working on one for the Galaxy S III or any other potential handset for that matter, which may put to bed any hope of a 3D camera too.

Intel has begun shipping its new 313 series of small-capacity SSDs that are Ultrabook-ready. They work alongside traditional hard disk drives to speed up boot times and load applications faster. Since SSDs are still quite expensive and offer less storage capacity, using smaller cache SDDs in combination with traditional HDDs is a cost effective method to get both speed and capacity into laptops.
