TP-Link launched its newest premium wireless home router, the TL-WDR4300 N750. This 802.11 b/g/n router is capable of running 450 Mbps over 5 GHz and 300 Mbps over 2.4 GHz bands simultaneously (dual-band), hence the number "750" in N750, derived out of combining the two bandwidths. With wired networking, the TL-WDR4300 provides four downstream 10/100/1000 Mbps (GbE) ports, and a GbE upstream (WAN) port.

Five US cable providers join forces to offer 50,000+ wireless hotspots

Five cable companies have announced a joint effort to provide wireless Internet hotspots across the US. Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable have agreed to let their high-speed Internet subscribers access each other's Wi-Fi networks. The effort, dubbed "CableWiFi," is similar to a deal signed between Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner in early 2010, which allowed cross-provider hotspot access throughout various northeastern US markets.

IEEE 802.11 Publishes 4th Revision, Adds Greater Throughput

IEEE said that 802.11-2012 integrates defined MAC and PHY modifications for "much higher throughputs up to 600Mb/s", direct-link setup, fast roam, radio resource measurement, support for the 3650 - 3700 MHz band and vehicular environments, mesh networking, security, broadcast/multicast and unicast data delivery, interworking with external networks as well as network management.

Netgear has today announced the world’s first 802.11ac WiFi router, the R6300, capable of speeds over 1Gbit/s on wireless. The new router is powered by Broadcom’s 5G WiFi chip, which is backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n. The R6300 is also dual band, with speeds potentially reaching 1300Mbit/s over 5Ghz, and 450Mbit/s over 2.4Ghz.

Thousands of broadband subscribers in the United Kingdom who illegally downloaded pornography will soon have their identities exposed. The United Kingdom’s High Court has ordered O2, a large U.K.-based Internet service provider, to hand over personal details identifying more than 9,000 subscribers to Golden Eye International and Ben Dover Productions, two companies run by British porn actor and producer Lindsay Honey. First ‘Super Wi-Fi’ network has deployed in North Carolina

‘Super Wi-Fi‘ has been in the works for years now, and the first in the nation has finally deployed in Wilmington, North Carolina. This new network is running on the currently bare “white space”. In 2010, the FCC had reported their approval for devices to run over this spectrum. At this same time, the FCC had required manufacturers to install special equipment into devices that would benefit from Super Wi-Fi.

MediaTek lays groundwork for gigabit WLANs

Semiconductor company MediaTek has introduced a system-on-a-chip (SoC) that will be used to power wireless routers based on the 802.11ac wireless networking standard, which promises gigabit speeds, the company said on Monday.
The upcoming 802.11ac standard will offer higher speeds than what is currently possible using 802.11n thanks to the use of more spectrum and more advanced antenna technology.

We'll be meeting with Buffalo later this week to get the details on its upcoming 802.11ac gear, but we just learned that it'll be launching its gigabit wireless router in the second half of 2012. The company expects to deliver 1300 Mbps speeds on this 5GHz wireless network, but it'll be backwards compatible with 802.11n as well. Range should be similar to other 5GHz devices, with the signal not expected to significantly penetrate the walls where it's in use.
