Lumia 900 owner vents Windows Phone 8 frustrations, Stephen Elop responds

Posted on Jun 21, 2012 by MG1

If you've been following our Windows Phone 8 coverage today, you know that anybody who buys a Windows Phone today will not be able to upgrade to WP8 when it ships this fall. If you were an early adopter that's not such a bad deal, but if you bought a Lumia 900 oh, say, three weeks ago you might be upset -- and rightly so. And rightfully angry is Luke, who sent us an email he fired off to Nokia's Stephen Elop and AT&T's Ralph de la Vega in which he asks why he shouldn't, right now, turn around and return his phone.

Nokia Lumia 900 finally available on O2 Germany

Nokia Lumia 900 finally available on O2 Germany

Posted on Jun 20, 2012 by MG1

It has been a very long wait, but the Nokia Lumia 900 has finally become available on O2 Germany, weeks after we first expected it to arrive.
There is of course also no evidence of 32 GB of storage, just the usual 16 GB, with the handset available for 514 Euro contract-free.
With the handset arriving on the eve of the Windows Phone 8 announcement, we can only hope Microsoft has some good news for existing owners.
See the phone at O2 here.

Nokia 808 PureView with 41MP camera is headed for America

Nokia 808 PureView with 41MP camera is headed for America

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

The Nokia 808 PureView smartphone is coming to the United States. It’s famous for having a 41MP camera sensor that snaps amazingly high quality photos and is sure to make photographers drool.
Later this week, buyers will be able to pre-order the device on Amazon. It won’t be tied with any carrier or contracts so you’ll have to purchase it at full-retail price. Nokia is pricing the PureView at $699, which won’t be an easy sell. It’s loaded with the Symbian OS and you’ll have to make sure you have a compatible AT&T SIM Card. It works with T-Mobile’s network, too, but only at sluggish 2G speeds.
The camera technology in the 808 PureView, which people have been so excited about, is a 41MP lens t...

Nokia Lumia 610 coming to China Unicom, Elop slips details in conference call

Nokia Lumia 610 coming to China Unicom, Elop slips details in conference call

Posted on Jun 18, 2012 by MG1

Chinese residents not willing to fork out for Nokia's flagship just got another option, the Lumia 610. China Unicom will be offering the littlest (and most recent) Lumia device, according to Stephen Elop, who managed to sneak the announcement into an at-times grim conference call held yesterday. While we knew the device was headed to all places Pacific, the device now looks set to join existing smartphone options on 3G (presumably low-price) plans. Interested? Then you may want to revisit our review for our thoughts on Nokia's humbly-priced handset.

Nokia to acquire Scalado, build a better Lumia (Updated)

Nokia to acquire Scalado, build a better Lumia (Updated)

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Scalado has more than a few tricks squirreled away in its mobile imaging bag, tricks that have served the likes of HTC and RIM well. Now, Espoo want those tricks all to itself. After working with the Swedish firm for years, Nokia has decided to take its partnership with Scalado to the next level: acquisition. The imaging outfit will be turning over its developers, intellectual property, technology and moniker over to Nokia in the third quarter of 2012 -- although the terms of the deal are confidential. Finland's favorite smartphone manufacturer plans to use Scalado's technology to enhance "imaging experiences for Nokia Lumia devices." Sounds good to us. Check out the official (and brief) pre...

Nokia 808 PureView arrives fashionably late in India, 41MP in tow

Nokia 808 PureView arrives fashionably late in India, 41MP in tow

Posted on Jun 14, 2012 by MG1

After initially announcing it would come in May, and then dropping a countdown red herring, the PureView is finally opening its big 808-eye in India today. The 41MP camera (and phone!) lands with a 33,899 Rupee ($600) MSRP, depending on your barter skills. The PureView might not be a spec heavyweight, with its single-core 1.3GHz chip, 512MB RAM and 360 x 640 display, but we still found it hummed along smartly with its nimble Symbian Belle OS. For those of you who've already set the cash aside, might be time to call that Indian friend.

Nokia announces major restructuring; 10,000 jobs could be lost by 2013

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia has issued a release Thursday morning, actually it was more of a dire warning. The Finnish based handset manufacturer said that to 'sharpen its strategy, improve its operating model and return the company to profitable growth' the company would cut up to 10,000 jobs and close its Salo factory by the end of 2013. The company wants to reduce its operating expenses while at the same time increasing the location based services it makes available to Nokia customers. It also plans on bringing in revenue by offering its mapping and location-based services to other industries
Nokia says it will invest in 'products and experiences' that will make Nokia handsets stand out and 'available' to more...

T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 now available on Pre-Paid

T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 now available on Pre-Paid

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

The Nokia Lumia 710 is now available on Pre-Paid on T-Mobile USA where it costs only $249.99 with $50 refill, bringing the actual cost down only to $199. The handset is also available in store on Bestbuy where it is retailing for $299.
The handset appears to be the best specced from the Pre-Paid devices in the price range, with most offering 3 megapixel cameras, WVGA screens and Android 2.3, and some even running 600 Mhz processors, which we all know is buttery smooth on Android.
Nokia has the logistic scale to be able to compete in the low-end and still make money, so hopefully their handsets will get the recognition they deserve for the great value for money they deliver.

Nokia shares soar 6% in Finland on rumor of Samsung bid

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungNOKIA

If Finnish investors could go back in time, they probably would have slapped some money down on Nokia's shares. The equity of the Finnish handset manufacturer rose 6% on Friday thanks to rumors that the company is about to get a takeover bid from Korean tech giant Samsung. This isn't the first time such rumors have appeared and exactly one year ago Friday, the same rumor hit the street. The difference is that back then, Nokia was worth $24 billion compared to the current market cap of $11 billion and the shares have dropped 40% over the last three months.

Google lashes out at Microsoft, Nokia over alleged patent trolling

Google lashes out at Microsoft, Nokia over alleged patent trolling

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Google filed a regulatory complaint with the European Commission accusing Microsoft and Nokia of using their arsenal of mobile patents to raise costs to consumers.
Google alleges that Microsoft and Nokia colluded to "patent troll" the industry by hiring a third company, Canadian patent holdings firm MOSAID, to rigorously enforce patents across the mobile industry.
Google also shared their filing with the U.S. Justice Department and the FTC.
In September last year, Nokia reportedly sold 2,000 wireless patents to MOSAID, a company that makes billions collecting royalties from such patents.
MOSAID takes a third of the royalties and gives the rest to the patents' original holders, in this case M...

Google lobs antitrust complaint against Microsoft, Nokia in EU, claims they're playing patent footsie (updated)

Posted on Jun 01, 2012 by MG3

The gloves just came off at Google: the company has just filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission against Microsoft and Nokia. Its gripe accuses the two Windows Phone partners of playing dirty pool through handing 1,200 wireless-related patents to Mosaid, a Canadian firm which spends most of its time suing the industry over WiFi rather than making products. Microsoft and Nokia are allegedly hiking the prices of devices by "creating patent trolls" that bypass deals preventing them from suing directly, possibly steering a few companies towards picking Windows Phone instead of Android.
