Cisco CEO says Huawei doesn't 'always play by the rules' of IP and security
Like UnlikeFiled in: CiscoHuawei
In a discussion with the Wall Street Journal, Cisco CEO John Chambers identified his company's biggest competitor: Huawei. Piling on to concerns that have already been expressed — and acted on — by the US government, Australian government, and even Symantec, Chambers said Huawei was a company that doesn't "always play by the rules, but you have to adjust to the markets that you're in." Huawei's image has been increasingly under fire of late, and Chamber's suggestion that both customers and governments "know who who they can trust and where there are challenges" looks like he's taking an opportunity to capitalize on concerns that Huawei can't be trusted when it comes to respecting intellectua...

The Pakistani government issued an open call for global companies to provide web filtering technology to filter the Internet.

Cisco blasts EC over Microsoft Skype openness
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftCisco
Cisco has taken time out from axing unpopular and overpriced teleconferencing systems to complain about Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype, challenging the EC with demands for greater priority for open video standards. Although Cisco doesn’t oppose the acquisition, video conferencing chief Marthin De Beer wrote on the company’s official blog, it does believe the European Commission shirked on insisting Microsoft must adopt open standards that won’t prevent rival services from intercommunicating.
“Imagine how difficult it would be if you were limited to calling people who only use the same carrier or if your phone could only call certain brands and not others” De Beer suggests. Cisco’s fear, it...

Cisco sees mobile data usage increasing 8-fold by 2016
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cisco
Cisco Systems, the company that wants to build “the human network” released their annual Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast today, and they foresee mobile users consuming data in 2016 at a rate 8x higher than they project for this year.
How much data is that? Cisco expects mobile data usage in 2012 to average 1.3 exabytes a month (an exabyte is a thousand petabytes, or if you prefer, a million terabytes of data). In four short years that number will balloon to an astonishing 10.8 exabytes of mobile data per month. Around that time Cisco also expects the number of mobile devices to eclipse 10 billion, at which point there will be more than one mobile device for every man, woman, and child e...

Cisco Predicts Cloud Traffic Will Increase 12-Fold by 2015
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cisco
The data meteorologists at Cisco say the upcoming forecast extending into the year 2015 calls for a 12-fold increase in global cloud traffic, compared to 2010. Cisco doesn't expect data center traffic to grow quite as steadily, but it will still zoom past 2010 levels and show a four-fold increase by 2015, according to data outlined in Cisco's latest study, "Cisco Global Cloud Index: Forecast and Methodology, 2010-2015."
Cisco's report is filled with staggering numbers, all of which revolve around cloud based traffic. According to Cisco, global cloud traffic will increase from 130 exabytes (EBs) in 2010 to 1.6 zettabytes (ZBs) in 2015 as businesses and consumers move into the so-called zettab...

Thought Cisco Was Out of Home Networking? Think Again
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cisco
Cisco seems to be in a very different place now than it was about six months ago. The networking and telecommunications giant recently hired a new general manager of its Home Networking Business Unit. That's the same division of Cisco that many predicted would be shuttered after CEO John Chambers announced the company would re-focus on its "core competencies," including enterprise networking, collaboration and video.
The announcement was made in wake of economic losses, perception Cisco had "disappointed" investors, and inevitably resulted in job losses, the killing of the Flip consumer video portion of its business, as well as endless speculation, much of it negative.
That was almost six mo...

Cisco to cut 6,500 jobs to boost profits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cisco
Cisco announced on Tuesday that it will layoff 9% of its workforce, or 6,500 jobs, in an effort to boost profits. That figure is lower than original speculation that the company would cut 10,000 employees. Cisco made the move as part of an effort to cut $1 billion in annual costs while spurring profit growth, Bloomberg reported. 2,100 of the 6,500 employees have agreed to an early-retirement program. Additionally, Cisco plans to sell a Juarez, Mexico-based manufacturing facility to Foxconn. The move will transfer 5,000 workers elsewhere but will not result in job cuts. Earlier this year, the company laid-off 550 additional employees when it announced that it was killing off its Flip camera a...

Cisco, RIM and the Lure of the Consumer Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: CiscoRIM BlackBerry
What is it about the mass-market consumer space that attracts so many business-savvy companies and ultimately hobbles or even dooms them? There are companies, like Apple, that obviously understand consumers and consumer marketing strategy and then there are companies like Cisco and Research in Motion (RIM), which clearly do not.
News that Cisco is laying off almost 9% of its workforce is black mark for CEO John Chambers, a man whom leaders at smaller companies have all but worshipped. I don't know for certain that the cuts will come primarily in Cisco's consumer business, but the missteps that have led up to this news have been in the consumer space.
Cisco and RIM's travails are most interes...

Cisco set to slash 10,000 jobs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cisco
Cisco is reportedly preparing to reduce its workforce by approximately 14 percent, a move that may eliminate 10,000 positions. The company is said to be planning 7,000 layoffs by the end of August, while early-retirement incentives will be offered to another 3,000 employees, unnamed sources have told Bloomberg.
The workforce reductions are said to be part of a broader strategy to bolster profits as the company loses market share to its competitors. The sources suggest CEO John Chambers is also planning to shift the company's focus away from business segments that are struggling to make profits.
Cisco recently killed its Flip efforts following lackluster sales of the small video cameras. Ana...
