Anonymous China hacks government websites in protest
Like UnlikeLooks like those hacktivists are at it again. Anonymous has defaced even more websites, although the legion of hackers seems to be branching out, with this attack being perpetrated by Chinese Anonymous members. Hundreds of Chinese government websites have been defaced in the usual spectacular fashion. Dumps full of emails and phone numbers have also hit the internet via Pastebin, as well as instructions by the group on how to bypass the Great Firewall of China.

RIM finally finds someone crazy enough to buy it
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Prepare yourself for perhaps the greatest single press release ever unleashed onto the tech industry. "Self-proclaimed" Dr. Nono C. Pearson, a country-style rap innovator who reputedly has "the copyrights to prove that he is the owner of what he calls 'Corporate Hip Hop,'" is approaching RIM with a proposal to buy out its "Black Berry" assets. This is to be done by an all-stock acquisition following the upcoming IPO of his not-yet-public company called United Vision Marketing Firm.
That's right, a dude with more chutzpah than sense or money has published a press release announcing his intent to take over the entire BlackBerry business. The thing is, while we may find this amusing now — and i...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleNexus S 4GAndroid 4.0
A few weeks ago we told you Android 4.0 was coming to the Nexus S 4G soon, then just a few days ago we saw a leaked update based on Android 4.0.4. Sprint just let us know that the update is officially rolling out, starting now. The update brings a number of new enhancements from Ice Cream Sandwich, including Android Beam, a new camera interface with panorama mode and the new UI enhancements in Android 4.0 that we've come to love. Sprint's email says that the update will be automatically downloaded to the user's phone when it is available, so keep an eye out for a prompt to apply. It will be sent out in waves, and they make no mention of a manual download process. For those of you rockin...

Apple is reportedly planning to refresh its iMac family of computers with Intel’s 22nm-based Core i5 and Core i7 Ivy Bridge processors in June or July, How To Arena reported on Wednesday, citing a “reliable tipster” in Apple’s supply chain. The Cupertino-based company is also reportedly ramping up production in preparation for thinner 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models, which will use the same Ivy Bridge processors. Previous rumors have suggested that Apple’s redesigned iMac would feature an anti-reflective glass display, and it should be slimmer and lighter than the current units. Apple’s iMac lineup was last updated in May 2011 with Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors, a high-speed Thunderbolt...

Australian court holds Google responsible for misleading search ads
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
In a turnaround from a lower court ruling, three Australian Federal Court judges ruled yesterday that Google was responsible for its advertisers' content and that it breached the country's trade law by hosting misleading ads. The case centered on four ads in particular, in which the advertisers used the names of their competitors to ensure the ads appeared in search results for said companies. That, the court ruled, was likely to mislead folks searching for those competitors. While there's no fine imposed on Google with that judgement, the judges are asking Google to change its practices and to pay court costs. The ruling also, of course, sets quite a precedent if it is upheld. Not surprisin...

Apple can decode and access anything stored in iCloud
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Users of Apple’s iCloud service are protected by industry-leading protection – 128 bit encryption, data transmission via SSL, the whole nine yards. In short, it’s very unlikely that any outside party could ever access your iCloud data without your permission.
Unless they asked Apple.
A recent security analysis conducted on behalf of Ars Technica has demonstrated that Apple keeps a key that lets them decode anything stored in iCloud at any time. Moreover, the Terms and Conditions you sign when you elect to use iCloud show that Apple expressly keeps the right to do so at any time they see fit. Apple retains the right to “pre-screen, move, refuse, modify and/or remove” any content they deem obj...

Shortly after unleashing (and quickly pulling back) the PS Vita's v1.65 firmware update, Sony's rapidly rolling out a followup release. Version 1.66 brings with it a few UI tweaks, including tidbits such as the addition of a progress bar during app installs, notification alerts now only popping up for three seconds, plus the option to tap Retry / Cancel when running into troubles during location search. Games like Unit 13 and Gravity Daze will also see "functional improvements," while the Near app is getting a direct link to the PlayStation Store, making it easier to grab apps that other folks are toying with. The refresh is up for grabs now, so be sure to hit that System Software on your qu...

HTC EVO 4G LTE US bound, but not UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCEVO 4G LTE
Damn those Americans. They get all the good stuff.
Not content with Disneyland and oversized burgers, HTC has unveiled its latest member of the EVO series, the HTC EVO 4G LTE, and it’s only coming to the US.
The smartphone that packs a domineering 4.7-inch HD display will be available exclusively from Sprint for $199.99, despite the fact the US network doesn’t currently have LTE capabilities.
However, as the phone won’t be out until the summer we assume this will give Sprint time to get its house in order.

Apple finally releases Java patches for Flashback malware
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple silently released security patches for Java, addressing 12 separate flaws yesterday after their OS X operating system was found to be vulnerable to the Flashback Trojan. In fact security experts were so worried about the potential for damage from the malware that they recommended ditching Java until it had been plugged.
While those using Microsoft’s Windows OS were at the highest level of risk initially, the Mac Security blog Intego found a new Flashback variant in the wild at the beginning of March, created to specifically target Apple OS X users.
The new update is available from the update manager for OS X 10.6 and 10.7 operating systems and is described by Apple as targeting “multip...
