Google today announced a tablet-specific version of its Google+ social network. Among other things the new tablet applications will feature Hangouts that automatically switch cameras based on which person in the Hangout is talking. The new app will be available on both the Apple iPad and Android-based tablets. Google is trying to end the debate over which mobile browser works best for Android by releasing the mobile version of its popular Chrome browser to the Google Play store on Wednesday. The Android version of the browser had been in Beta until Wednesday and is currently only available for devices that have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. This here is pure speculation, so we absolutely don't mind if you disagree with what you are about to read. Now that we've made that clear, let us present you with our (wild) hypothesis.
It is just that there is something about the Google Nexus 7 and its name. Think about it: it could have been named something else like the Google Nexus Tab, Google Nexus Slate, Google Nexus butter-on-toast, but no. We simply have a figure representing the device's display size. Why have a "7" at the end instead of some elegant moniker since there is no other Nexus tablet to confuse this one with?

CyanogenMod 9 RC1 brings near-final Android 4.0 ROM to 37 devices

The development team behind the popular CyanogenMod Android firmware is making the first wave of release candidates available for its Android 4.0 ROM, CyanogenMod 9. The list contains 37 devices, including older phones like the Nexus S, non-Android devices like the HP Touchpad, and newer phones like the international Galaxy S III —although there isn't yet an RC1 download for the HTC One X. From this point, the ROMs will enter the nightly build stage as developers work their way toward gold releases — more or less final versions.

Google pays out $11,500 in bug bounty for Chrome 20

Google has paid out $11,500 in bounty money to security researchers for spotting bugs in the latest stable version of its Chrome web browser, released yesterday. $7,000 goes to a single developer, named "miaubiz", who discovered seven separate bugs, including several problems with the browser's handling of SVG images. A further $4,000 goes to Jüri Aedla, who spotted two integer overflows, one threatening more than just the browser, potentially allowing an attacker to affect the underlying system on 64-bit Linux machines. Meanwhile, Nicholas Gregoire picks up a modest $500 for spotting a "wild read in XSL handling."

Google has launched Maps Coordinate in the US, a paid-for mobile app designed to help companies track and manage workers on the move.
The location service will allow a business to track and locate workers in the field but has an additional layer of functionality that allows a business to schedule work and set tasks for remote workers to follow.

Now this was a long wait. We did hear “VLC coming to Android” stories back in 2010, but now the launch is imminent, with VideoLAN turning to Twitter to spread the good news. Their tweet simply says “Android, here we come!” which seems enough for some users, whereas some others are still asking for the exact date. Larry Page Sick? Missed events make Google CEO's health questionable

The health of Google co-founder and chief executive Larry Page has been called into question following the CEO’s absence from Google’s shareholders’ meeting on Thursday. Chairman Eric Schmidt stated that Page skipped the meeting due to a voice condition, but Google also said Page would not be present at the Google I/O developer conference next week, or at the company’s second-quarter earnings call in July while his voice recovers. JP Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth on Friday pondered to clients whether or not the CEO’s health problem is being downplayed by Google.

Google sued: Texas AG antitrust investigation

Google has apparently decided to mess with Texas. Per the Wall Street Journal, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has filed suit against Google in an attempt to lasso some runaway documents that Google claimed were covered by attorney-client privilege. In all, Google has claimed attorney-client privilege on more than 14,500 documents and the Texas AG is alleging that Google hasn’t even come close to clearly demonstrating that they’re all privileged. Abbott is investigating Google for allegedly using its monopoly search power to harm rival Internet companies. Antitrust regulators in both the United States federal government and the European Union have launched similar investigations.

Google TV launches in UK with Sony

Google TV will launch in the UK in the third week in July, with pre-orders of the £200 Sony NSZ-GS7 set top box opening today.
A £300 NSZ-GP4 Blu-ray player is set to follow later in the summer, but there's no date on when an integrated television set will arrive for the UK.
The two offerings from Sony bring the second generation of Google TV – hugely overhauled from the much-maligned original and deemed suitable for a global audience.
There's also a nifty new remote with a laptop-like multitouch touchpad on the front and a QWERTY keyboard on the rear.

Last night, it seems that word had slipped out that the Android 4.0 update was available for the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II via Kies. Unfortunately, it turned out that the update was available only for a limited time. For those unfamiliar with the process, Kies allows users to connect their Samsung-made device with a PC or Mac using a USB cable. One use of Kies is to install software updates such as Android 4.0 as an alternative to an OTA update.

Android Jelly Bean revealed as version 4.1 on Galaxy Nexus checkout page

We have yet to get any confirmation from Mountain View, but it looks like Jelly Bean just got a touch more official. The as-yet-unannounced Android OS was outed as version 4.1 on the Galaxy Nexus Google Wallet checkout page. 4.1 does in fact make Jelly Bean a more incremental update than the potentially more significant Ice Cream Sandwich, from a classification perspective, at least. The operating system also, based on the checkout page above, will be coming to the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ version first -- which handsets will follow is yet to be seen.
