John Carmack says PS4, Xbox 720 nothing to be excited about
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyMicrosoftPlayStation 4XBOX One
Game development expert John Carmack believes that the next generation of video game consoles won’t be anything to write home about. Carmack said in a recent interview that he was admittedly optimistic about the increased rendering power of an Xbox 720 or PS4, but beyond that he has no grand vision of what to expect. We may be hitting the point of diminishing returns.
“Any creative vision that a designer could come up with, we can do a pretty good job representing on current generation and certainly on PC. In many ways I am not all that excited about the next generation. It will let us do everything we want to do now, with the knobs turned up,” Carmack said.
He continued, “If you take a curr...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
Microsoft has rolled out its latest firmware update to everyone. But don’t expect any monumental change to your Xbox Live experience. Yet. This is mainly an update to prepare your system for future major updates. Micosoft’s Larry Hryb, also known as Major Nelson, confirmed on his blog that the update is now mandatory for all users.
“What’s in it, you ask? Behind the scenes foundational improvement that will not be visually noticeable, but will help enable an easy update this Fall,” Hryb confirmed. There is only one real update, and that’s for Australia and New Zealand users – Bing-powered Kinect voice search has been added for those regions. Hryb also noted that a weird issue in the update m...

'Minecraft' creator claims Xbox 360 version is the best-selling Live Arcade game ever, with over two million sold
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
It didn't take long to see that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition would be a huge hit. The game set a new single-day sales record on the Xbox Live Arcade last month, and now Minecraft creator Markus Persson (perhaps better known as Notch) has tweeted that the Xbox 360 version his game is the best-selling Xbox Live Arcade game ever, less than a month after launch. Apparently, the game has already sold over two million copies, according to a follow-up tweet by Daniel Kaplan, who serves as business developer for Minecraft publisher Mojang. Hitting the two million milestone isn't a huge shock — after all, the game managed to sell a cool million in less than one week. If Persson's claim is to be believ...

Sony Playstation 4: includes optical drive, not download-only
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 4
Sony considered removing the optical drive from its next-generation Playstation gaming console, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Japanese electronics maker decided against a download-only model, however, because “Internet connectivity is too inconsistent around the world.” Removing the optical drive would have also hurt the adoption of Blu-ray, which Sony heavily pushed with its Playstation 3. The next-generation PlayStation, codename Orbis, is rumored to launch during the holiday season of 2013. It has been reported that the system will feature an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU capable of running games at a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels.

Sony to reveal PS3, Vita ebook platform
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3PSVITA
If you like the idea of ebooks, but hate the fact that you can’t read them from 10 feet away on the living room sofa, Sony might have the solution to your problems. Okay, we’re exaggerating a bit. There’s a rumor that Sony is working on a digital books section to the PlayStation Store, but it is hardly going to try to be a competitor to the Kindle, iBooks, or Nook.

Sony PlayStation 4 tipped for 2013
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 4
With games such as Doom 3: BFG Edition still making waves in the industry of what some would call a fading wave for console gaming, Sony’s PlayStation 4′s release in 2013 is sure to be a hit. That’s what “sources close to the matter” speaking with the Wall Street Jounral are saying in hopes that the news this week that an ultra-slick disk-less cloud-based PlayStation was being released was bashed by early critics. This situation reflects essentially what happened when the PSP Go was released, failure that it was with downloadable content only, ditching physical game units altogether.

Amazon Instant Video streaming is now live on the Xbox 360
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftAmazonXbox 360 S
If Amazon's video store is going to compete with the other online sources like Hulu and Netflix, getting on as many platforms as possible is key and it made a major expansion today by launching on the Xbox 360. The app launched on the PS3 back in April, and just like that version, this one includes access to Amazon's video on-demand and Prime all-you-can-eat subscription based streaming. Unique to the Xbox 360 app is support for the console's Kinect peripheral and its ability to recognize control by gesture or voice, plus a brand new feature for Amazon -- a queue. The Watchlist (for now only available on the Xbox 360, Kindle Fire and via the web) lets customers preselect programming they're ...

Skype for Xbox 360 unlikely until 2013
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXbox 360 S
Microsoft bought Skype in May last year for the large sum of $8.5 billion, but not much has come of the acquisition so far. A Skype application has made the jump to Windows Phone, which was met with mixed reactions, but so far the VOIP service hasn’t found its way into Microsoft’s ecosystem. Skype is said to be coming for the Xbox 360, but the crucial detail is when. Turns out you may not see it until next year.

Sony PS4 to have game-freezing adverts? Welcome to gaming hell
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 4
Sony’s got a track record for doing adverts rather well. Its Bravia ads in particular are pretty awe-inspiring. You know the ones with the bouncing balls and the exploding paint? Yeah. That. Thing is, that doesn’t mean that the company gets it right all the time. In fact, we’d say the power’s gone to Sony’s head, as it’s just filed a patent application to bring game-freezing adverts to its consoles. And maybe the Sony PS4…

If you have a hankering to download a new game or movie from the PlayStation Store during the day tomorrow, you might be out of luck. However, if you have logged into the PlayStation Network within the last four days, you will still be able to play online games as well as access online video streaming apps including Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. It’s a consolation from Sony so that gamers can still access some PSN services.
