HTC working on an Android-based media player?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid
File this under rumors but it seems HTC is working on an Android-based media player. Guess they like Apple’s iPod Touch sales figures and since Samsung is already doing it – why not give it a shot? Personally I don’t get the point of such devices — since my phone does all that plus allows me to make phone calls — but that’s me.

The Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 introduced at last year's IFA will be making a debut in the US sometime this year, Engadget has learned on a recent trip to Samsung's Korean offices. The device would once more compete with the likes of Apple's iPod touch. The design is relatively low-cost and carries a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, a 3.65-inch, 480x320-pixel LCD, and Android 2.3.

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.2 portable Android media player is announced
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersSamsungGalaxy S WiFi 4.2
Ladies and gents, introducing the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.2 – the latest Android-powered portable media player to join the company's portfolio. Just like the rest of the gang, it delivers the versatility and software variety of the Android platform with cellular connectivity being the only thing omitted.
As its name suggests, the display on the Galaxy S WiFi 4.2 measures 4.2 inches in diagonal. It is of the IPS LCD kind and has a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels. The processor inside the device, namely a single-core chip clocked at 1GHz, may sound like something one would find under the hood of a last year's smartphone, but let's hope that it will go easy on the gizmo's 1,500 mAh battery. A p...

Pictures of iPod nano with camera re-emerge
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersAppleiPod nano 6gen
Last year a number of leaks and photos suggested that Apple had a redesigned iPod nano with an integrated camera in the works. The new device wasn’t released last time Apple refreshed its iPod family, but now another round of pictures has surfaced that lends credence to the possibility that such a device may launch in the near future. The images show a camera-equipped iPod nano complete with its signature clip design, and the device appears to be the same size as the current-generation iPod nano. It remains unclear if Apple will ever release an iPod nano with a camera but the source, Apple.pro, has published early details surrounding Apple hardware in the past that ended up panning out. Whited00r lets you install iOS 5 look-alike on old-gen iPhones and iPod Touches
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesPortable Media PlayersAppleiPhoneiPod touch 2geniPod touch
If you're still rockin' an ancient iPhone or iPod Touch and are fed up with friends teasing you at every chance with their new-style multitasking and reminder features, we've got some good news for you. A new software, dubbed Whited00r, will let you install portions of iOS 5 on the first two generations of the iPod Touch, iPhone 3G and even your O.G. iPhone. Whited00r accomplishes this by simply acting as a custom firmware -- à la CyanogenMod 9 on Android handsets. There are, however, a few traits that devs haven't been able to mimic, which include core services like the App Store (though, you can install apps via iTunes on your home machine), Notification Center and iCloud. So, for those of...

Will Zune be renamed to Microsoft Music, completely abandoned, or what?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersMicrosoftZune HDZune 4Zune 8Zune 16Zune 120
It’s been rumored for a long time now that the Zune brand would eventually be killed off, considering the commercial failure of the Zune music players. But alas, Zune has lived on as the music service integrated into Windows Phone and Xbox, and the Zune desktop software is used to synchronize Windows Phones with PCs, suggesting that Microsoft was looking to retain Zune as a brand similar to Apple’s iTunes.
In all Windows 8 demos and previews to date, however, the Zune branding was notably absent, and Neowin is now claiming that they’ve seen a possible replacement for it, on Windows 8 devices shown at CES, that’s called Microsoft Music.

Sony Walkman Z Series gets official
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersSony
Last month we saw the Sony Walkman Z1000 Android-powered medial player cross the FCC. Sony has gone official with the new line of players at CES. The Z1000 has several model numbers in it that are differentiated by their storage capacity. The Z1040 is 8GB, the Z1050 is 16GB, and the Z1060 is a 32GB player.
All of them share the same features like integrated WiFi, Android operating system, xLOUD speakers, and the ability to connect with DLNA devices. The players have HDMI outputs to connect directly to your TV. The screens on the player are 4.3-inches and use low reflectivity tech. Powering the players is the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset.

CES 2012: Sony intros Android-based Walkman Z1000 to battle iPod
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersSony
Sony unveiled an interesting gem tonight at CES 2012, as it introduced the Android 2.3-powered Walkman Z1000 series Mobile Entertainment Player to go against the iPod touch and the Galaxy Player.
For what is primarily a music player, Sony wanted to make sure this thing has a great music experience. In terms of audio quality, the Walkman Z1000 boasts a “S-Master MX” digital amplifier to reduce unwanted noise and distortion. In terms of usability, there’s a dedicated W button on board. Tapping it instantly launches the music app from wherever you are.

Sony announces its Walkman Z Android PMP for the U.S.
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersSony
During its CES presentation, Sony announced it will bring its Android-based Walkman Z portable music player to U.S. markets. The device ships with a range of internal storage options, and the usual array of WiFi, DLNA, and Bluetooth connectivity.
While prior Sony PMPs did not officially reach U.S. shores; Sony has decided the time is right to unleash Android Walkman's on North American shores. Smartphones continue to eat into the PMP market – Apple’s iPod sales have contracted as iPhone sales increase – but there is probably a market for people who already have invested in the Android ecosystem who would like a touch-based music device that can use the apps they’ve already paid for.

iPhones, iPod Touches still on iOS 3.1.3 can't download new apps directly from the App Store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesPortable Media PlayersOperating SystemsTabletsApple
While fragmentation is a rare(r) problem on iOS there's still quite a few users rocking older versions on their devices. Unfortunately for them, ever since a recent update on the 16th they haven't been able to download any new apps from the App Store straight to their devices. While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. We were able to confirm the issue on one of our own devices, while there's a pretty lengthy thread in Apple's support forum about the issue, but no official respo...

Sony brings Music Unlimited service to Walkman PMPs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersSony
Sony's Music Unlimited subscription service was already available on a wide variety of products like its TVs and Blu-Ray players, and now it's available on its line of Walkman PMPs. Similar to Spotify and Rdio, Music Unlimited allows you to stream anything from Sony's library of 10 million tracks, with the requisite playlist creation and genre-specific music channels, but moving that music to your Walkman isn't the most straightforward process. First, users must install the "Music Unlimited Transfer" application and plug their Walkman into a Windows PC. After that, you can transfer playlists or channels you've created over to the Walkman, but note that Sony's application doesn't actually let...

New 'first-gen' iPod nano replacements now shipping
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersAppleiPod nano 5gen
Apple is now shipping replacement iPod nanos to customers who had Nanos from a certain batch in the first-generation production run that have been shown to have defective batteries that could, in rare circumstances, overheat or even catch fire. The new units are exactly the same as the replacements, and not brand new iPod nanos (which now hold 8GB or 16GB) as some had hoped. The original Nanos came in 1, 2 or 4GB capacities.
The replacement units are likely refurbished on the inside but include new shells and new batteries. They are otherwise identical to the original units, which debuted in late 2005 and replaced the iPod mini. They were quickly replaced with a second-generation version a y...

Creative Zen X-Fi3 gets covered in FCC fingerprints
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersCreativeZEN X-Fi3
Remember the Zen X-Fi3, that little, bitty portable media player that we spent a bit of hands-on time with, back in September? Well, the FCC has had its crack at the thing, and the agency wasn't quite as kind, ripping pint-sized music player apart and displaying its innards for all the world to see, which might be for the best, really. While the outsides of the device aren't particularly exciting, the player's got some stuff going on under the hood, like built-in Bluetooth, which the company claims can stream high-quality audio courtesy of the apt-X codec. See the X-Fi3 exposed to the world in the gallery below.

The iPod turns 10, celebrates a decade of destroying physical media
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersAppleiPod
It's hard to believe, but it's been exactly ten years since the iPod was first unveiled, ultimately changing the music industry forever. The iPod wasn't the first, it wasn't the smallest, it didn't have the largest hard drive, but it did have an iconic style and simple to use interface that led march away from CDs. When the history of Apple is written the iPod (perhaps more than the iMac, OS X or the iPhone) will be credited with helping spearhead the company's second coming. Over the years the music player has seen countless iterations and redesigns, and an expansion of the product line to include smaller devices and touch screens -- but for most it's the scroll wheel and white earbuds that...

Zune HD killed once again
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersMicrosoftZune HD
The saga of the Zune HD has taken another turn. The execution of the device heralded last week when all links to the Zune HD was removed from Microsoft’s Zune website, and the above announcement, saying “we will no longer be producing Zune players” was posted on Microsoft’s site.
There followed the removal of the notice and denials by the official Zune twitter account.
Now the notice has gone up again, and online stores shows the Zune HD is out of stock.
The writing has been on the wall for Zune hardware for some time now with the integration of much of the software in Windows Phone 7, and while no-one may have told the Zune support staff I think it is safe to write the obituary now.
