Apple's updated MacBook Pro rumored to arrive this summer will feature Nvidia graphics alongside Intel's Ivy Bridge processors, a switch from the AMD GPUs in the current models. The news comes to us directly from a trusted source, and it's further corroborated by Joanna Stern at ABC News, whose sources also tell her that the new machines will indeed feature high resolution Retina Displays.
While we can't yet confirm what specific Nvidia chip Apple will use, a 9to5 Mac report from earlier today located references to the GeForce GT 650M, a 28nm chip built on the "Kepler" architecture that should offer similar power and performance efficiency to the well-regarded 28nm GeForce GT 640M. We recent...

What's black and white and red all over? One thing it's probably not is NVIDIA's Q1 2013 earnings report. That's why we're here to dig through the muck and tell you that the company saw both profits and revenue fall from last quarter. Revenue was down three percent to $924.9 million but, more shockingly, net income dropped 47.9 percent to just $60 million. With a slew of new product launches over the last few months NVIDIA is optimistic about the future and actually managed to beat Wall Street's expectations. Though it offers little explanation for the drop off in its earnings press release, we'd expect things to get back to normal soon. For all the fine financial details, check out the PR a...

Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 launches with high-end specs, $399 price

Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 launches with high-end specs, $399 price

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

Been lusting after a GeForce GTX 680 at a more affordable price point? Nvidia has done the inevitable and trickled its Kepler GPU architecture down to a more wallet-friendly level with the introduction of the $399 GeForce GTX 670. The new card is based on the same DNA, in Nvidia's words, as the GTX 680, but nixes 192 CUDA cores and about a tenth off the base and boost operating speeds to arrive at 1,344 cores and 915MHz / 980MHz clocks. It retains the same generous 2GB video buffer, made up of 256-bit GDDR5 RAM, and in a standard configuration will ship with two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors. Nvidia rates the GTX 670's TDP at 170W, however if you run it in a completely stock config, the c...

New Nvidia service will auto-generate optimized game settings

New Nvidia service will auto-generate optimized game settings

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: nVIDIA

Nvidia announced an initiative that should make it easier for PC gamers to find ideal graphics settings. Unless you're fortunate enough to have a powerhouse like the company's new dual-GPU GTX 690, you probably have to put some thought into your game's detail settings. Running everything maxed likely isn't an option, so you have to increase visuals until your hardware begs for mercy, then dial it down a notch.
Developers try to remove some of the trial and error by recommending system specs, that's mostly only helpful when determining if you can play a game. In-game quality presets are also helpful, but don't offer perfectly optimized settings. Publications like TechSpot provide more insight...

China Times: HTC wants to develop its own processors for low-end phones

China Times: HTC wants to develop its own processors for low-end phones

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

Encroaching into the semiconductor business might not seem the most obvious move for a phone manufacturer that's trying to unify its efforts. Nevertheless, China Times reports that HTC has signed a "memorandum of cooperation" with ST-Ericsson to co-develop a new dedicated chip for low-end handsets coming out next year. Since ST-Ericsson is a fabless chip designer, HTC won't risk getting silicon between its fingernails. Instead, if this agreement is what it seems, the Taiwanese manufacturer may simply want more direct control over its supply chains and to reduce its current reliance on ready-made designs from Qualcomm or NVIDIA. After all, it can't be easy for HTC's new CFO, looking on while ...

NVIDIA: there's nothing 'Ultra' about Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks unless you add Kepler

NVIDIA: there's nothing 'Ultra' about Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks unless you add Kepler

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

This is a vaguely awkward message for NVIDIA to be putting out. On one hand, the company is best buddies with Intel and is hoping to see its next-gen GPUs bundled with a large portion of the Ivy Bridge notebooks that will ship this year. But to reach that target, it must risk irking Chipzilla by emphasizing the limitations of Ivy Bridge's integrated graphics. That's exactly what happened at a recent presentation, when NVIDIA told us there'll be "nothing Ultra" about the performance of a regular Ivy Bridge Ultrabook because the integrated HD 4000 graphics will only handle around 43 percent of current games.

Asus Introduces Factory Overclocked GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP

Asus Introduces Factory Overclocked GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

It's still a challenge finding one of Nvidia's Kepler infused GeForce GTX 680 graphics cards in stock and ready to ship, but one thing the new GPU series doesn't lack is third-party variation. Nvidia's GPU partners are putting their own stamp on the GTX 680 with custom coolers and, in some cases like the new DirectCU II TOP edition from Asus, custom designed PCBs as well.
Asus went above and beyond the reference blueprint with the GeForce GTX DirectCU II TOP, adding 10-phase DIGI+ VRM digitally regulated power delivery with 30 percent noise reduction. The card also features 'Super Alloy Power' components that Asus claims will last 2.5 times longer than reference parts.

NVIDIA teases likely GeForce GTX 690

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

NVIDIA used its Facebook page late this week to offer a teaser for what's likely its next-generation, dual-chip graphics hardware. Although the text only shows that "it's coming," traces of a thick card with two sets of heatsinks point to it being a higher-end board rather than a mid-range model. With the GTX 680 already out, the component is likely to ba called the GTX 690.

NVIDIA's mobile GPUs to surpass Xbox 360 performance by 2014

NVIDIA's mobile GPUs to surpass Xbox 360 performance by 2014

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

NVIDIA sees its mobile system-on-a-chip graphics solutions surpassing the performance of the Xbox 360 in the coming years. A new graph the company shared with AnandTech highlights the performance of Tegra chips in comparison to those found within PCs and gaming consoles. The solid lines are estimated performance, while the dotted lines are trends. NVIDIA estimates that at some point in 2013, mobile graphic performance will match the Xbox 360 and by 2014, mobile performance will surpass that of the Xbox 360. Of course processor performance is hardly the only piece of the puzzle when it comes to gaming, and Microsoft and Sony will each have new consoles on the market in 2014.

Nvidia: Tegra 3+ ''Wayne'' Arrives Later This Year

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

On Thursday Michael Rayfield, general manager of Nvidia’s mobile business unit, confirmed during HTC's Frequencies conference in Seattle that the company plans to release an upgraded Tegra 3 SoC later this year in 3Q12.
A Tegra roadmap displayed during the conference named the new "Wayne" chip as "T3+" or "Tegra 3+," although that will not be the official title when the chip ships to device manufacturers later this year. Rayfield indicated that the SoC will bring better performance to smartphones and tablets, but it won't feature the integrated LTE modem as reported earlier this year.
