ASUS video hints of a possible dual booting Windows/Android tablet

A few days ago, ASUS released a video that teased an upcoming tablet that seems to be an addition to its Transformer line. The Transformer tablets can dock into a QWERTY keyboard and the video invited the viewer to join ASUS as it announces "the truly incredible next transformations". The manufacturer's next video was released on Thursday in advance of an announcement set for June 4th at Computex. Considering the message of the new video, that announcement could be very interesting indeed.

Google this week announced a second generation Chromebook model from Samsung, the Series 5 550, which dispenses with the previous generation Chromebook's Atom N570 processor and replaces it with a dual-core Celeron B867 chip sporting Sandy Bridge DNA. That's well and good if you're into Chromebooks, except that companies like Asus and HTC aren't tripping over themselves trying to launch second generation Chromebook models of their own.

Asus Google Nexus 7 outed - the first Jelly Bean tablet?

Rumours of a Google Nexus tablet have gathered pace and it's almost certainly going to be a 7-incher from Asus.
A benchmark test run using Basemark has revealed some interesting facts. Going by the codename “Grouper” - Google has a history of codenaming its Nexus devices after fish - the tablet is said to have the model number “Nexus 7” which hints heavily at two important details.

It's still only showing WiFi radios with no trace of a cellular connection, although if it's going to be the $249 standard bearer NVIDIA and ASUS were so excited about, that's to be expected. A juicier rumor that has surfaced in the intervening period however, suggests this device will actually be released as a Google Nexus 7-inch tablet (or just sold from a Google store), and could even feature the next version of Android, codenamed Jelly Bean. ASUS loves a good teaser, and its Computex 2012 promo is a fine example of the breed: ominous voice, vague mention of the cloud, and a hint of a new Transformer dockable tablet. “Don’t get set into one form, adapt it and build your own” the video – which you can see after the cut – suggests, in what’s almost certainly a reference to ASUS’ recent drive for tablets that can be slotted into battery-toting keyboards, and phones that dock into slates.

ASUS isn't known for offering its tablets to North American carriers with 3G or 4G; an FCC filing for a cellular-capable Transformer Pad TF300 could be a clue at a break in the WiFi-only trend. Along with the usual wireless, a TF300TL variant of the Android 4.0 slate has stopped by the agency with the 850MHz and 1,900MHz frequencies needed for HSPA 3G as well as, best of all, 700MHz and 1,700MHz support for LTE-based 4G. All four are what we'd look for in an AT&T-oriented tablet, so don't be surprised if Ma Bell carries a 4G Transformer Pad before long. Update for Asus Transformer Pad TF300 makes the device more stable

A minor software update for the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, which was disseminated to some tablets on Friday, is now being sent out to the remaining owners of the device. As an OTA update, it should be easy to install. The new software version is 9.4.3.29 and the Wi-Fi and camera versions get a bump up as well, giving you some idea of where to look for improvements. One build that doesn't change is the Android OS which remains at 4.0.3.

ASUS Transformer TF101 gets ICS update

ASUS has released an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the original Eee Pad Transformer. The Taiwanese company announced the update today, posting the release notes to its blog. The update will bring the firmware version to 9.2.1.21 and will start rolling out to users today.
The update will add several enhancements, such as improving system stability, email stability, AppBackup App, and MyLibrary stability. It will also bring support for WiFi Direct, the unzip function in File Manager, and the restore tab function in Browser.
