Amazon Instant Video streaming is now live on the Xbox 360

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

If Amazon's video store is going to compete with the other online sources like Hulu and Netflix, getting on as many platforms as possible is key and it made a major expansion today by launching on the Xbox 360. The app launched on the PS3 back in April, and just like that version, this one includes access to Amazon's video on-demand and Prime all-you-can-eat subscription based streaming. Unique to the Xbox 360 app is support for the console's Kinect peripheral and its ability to recognize control by gesture or voice, plus a brand new feature for Amazon -- a queue. The Watchlist (for now only available on the Xbox 360, Kindle Fire and via the web) lets customers preselect programming they're ...

Skype for Xbox 360 unlikely until 2013

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft bought Skype in May last year for the large sum of $8.5 billion, but not much has come of the acquisition so far. A Skype application has made the jump to Windows Phone, which was met with mixed reactions, but so far the VOIP service hasn’t found its way into Microsoft’s ecosystem. Skype is said to be coming for the Xbox 360, but the crucial detail is when. Turns out you may not see it until next year.

Xbox 360 could face ban in US over Motorola patents

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft may have scored a victory against Motorola’s Android phones in the US, but Moto has just landed its own heavy blow. A judge has recommended that the Xbox 360 should be banned in the United States following the discovery that Microsoft has infringed on four of Motorola’s patents relating to H.264 and the use of wireless tech in controllers. Microsoft was found to infringe the patents last month, but the recommendation for the sales ban was issued on Monday.

Report: Microsoft revealing Xbox 'Woodstock' music service at E3

Report: Microsoft revealing Xbox 'Woodstock' music service at E3

Posted on Apr 26, 2012 by MG3

We are stardust. We are golden. And we've got to get ourselves back to the Xbox. According to some anonymous-type sources over at The Verge, Microsoft is set to continue its shift away from Zuneland into the world of Woodstock -- that's reportedly the codename of a new Spotify-like service set to make its debut at this year's E3. According to the reports, the tiny yellow bird of a service will work across platforms (think Windows 8, iOS, Android and, of course, the Xbox, amongst others), thanks, at least in part, to browser-based functionality. The service is said to be set to launch later in the year, around the same as some key MS operating systems.

Microsoft Xbox 360 found to infringe Motorola patents in preliminary ITC ruling

Microsoft Xbox 360 found to infringe Motorola patents in preliminary ITC ruling

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

A judge at the US International Trade Commission has just ruled that Microsoft's Xbox 360 infringes four of Motorola's patents. The ruling isn't unexpected, since many of the patent cover H.264 video encoding, which is a standard — the ITC wasn't persuaded by Microsoft's argument that Motorola will "kill video on the web" by failing its obligation to license the patents under fair and reasonable terms. In a statement, Microsoft said it "remains confident the Commission will ultimately rule in Microsoft's favor in this case and that Motorola will be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms."

NVIDIA's mobile GPUs to surpass Xbox 360 performance by 2014

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

NVIDIA sees its mobile system-on-a-chip graphics solutions surpassing the performance of the Xbox 360 in the coming years. A new graph the company shared with AnandTech highlights the performance of Tegra chips in comparison to those found within PCs and gaming consoles. The solid lines are estimated performance, while the dotted lines are trends. NVIDIA estimates that at some point in 2013, mobile graphic performance will match the Xbox 360 and by 2014, mobile performance will surpass that of the Xbox 360. Of course processor performance is hardly the only piece of the puzzle when it comes to gaming, and Microsoft and Sony will each have new consoles on the market in 2014.

Microsoft denies claims Xbox 360 has security issues

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft has questioned the validity of claims that credit card details can be retrieved even after an Xbox 360 has been reset to factory settings. A group of researchers has claimed that had managed to do just that with little more than basic modifying tools. Microsoft, which manufactures the Xbox 360, has come out guns blazing, strenuously denying that this is possible.

Game Developers Diss Wii U's Graphics System, Prefer PS3 and Xbox 360

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

Barring any last minute surprises, Nintendo will be the first of the big three console makers to come out with a next generation living room game system. It's the Wii U, and it will ship with HD graphics support, a funky new tablet controller, and updated guts that, in theory, should have developers excited. It is, after all, a new toy to play with. So why are a handful of developers dissing the Wii U?

It's the subpar graphics, or at least that's what developers supposedly familiar with the hardware told GamesIndustry International. The developers, who wish to remain anonymous, said the Wii U is "just not as powerful" as the PS3 or Xbox 360, a pair of consoles that have been around the bloc...
