If you look at the mobile industry, ARM designs and chips dominate the scenery with 28nm being the keyword for this year with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 leading the pack, but looking on the other side of things, there is Intel which is already a generation ahead of most mobile chip manufacturers with its 22nm Ivy Bridge lineup, but what’s interesting is that it wants to break further ahead and has already 5nm silicon in its plans.
A leaked slide of Intel’s plans details how the company wants to switch to 13nm manufacturing as soon as next year, and continue to increase the transistor density with 10nm and less projected for 2015 and later.

A slew of new Ivy Bridge processors isn’t the only thing Intel is announcing today. Slipped into the announcement of its third-generation Core architecture was the mention of the HD 4000 series of integrated graphics cards, which will replace the standard graphics currently on a huge assortment of laptops and desktops. According to Intel, the new integrated graphics chips will deliver up to double performance from the 3000 series, an impressive claim and a necessary advancement as Ultrabooks (most of which use Intel’s HD graphics) become a more popular PC segment.

NVIDIA: there's nothing 'Ultra' about Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks unless you add Kepler

NVIDIA: there's nothing 'Ultra' about Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks unless you add Kepler

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

This is a vaguely awkward message for NVIDIA to be putting out. On one hand, the company is best buddies with Intel and is hoping to see its next-gen GPUs bundled with a large portion of the Ivy Bridge notebooks that will ship this year. But to reach that target, it must risk irking Chipzilla by emphasizing the limitations of Ivy Bridge's integrated graphics. That's exactly what happened at a recent presentation, when NVIDIA told us there'll be "nothing Ultra" about the performance of a regular Ivy Bridge Ultrabook because the integrated HD 4000 graphics will only handle around 43 percent of current games.

According to a presentation caught by Liliputing, Intel has made it abundantly clear that current resolutions lack the necessary pixels-per-inch (PPI) to efficiently complete everyday media tasks. To solve this problem, Intel is supporting plans for “Retina”-like displays in the near future. The company specifically expects 5-inch Smartphones at a resolution of 1280x800, 10-inch Tablet devices at a resolution of 2560x1440, 11-inch and 13-inch Ultrabooks at 2560x1440 and 2800x1800 respectively, and 15-inch Notebooks and 21-inch All-in-one desktops at a resolution of 3840x2160.

Intel ships small 313 Series SSDs for Ultrabooks

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Intel

Intel has begun shipping its new 313 series of small-capacity SSDs that are Ultrabook-ready. They work alongside traditional hard disk drives to speed up boot times and load applications faster. Since SSDs are still quite expensive and offer less storage capacity, using smaller cache SDDs in combination with traditional HDDs is a cost effective method to get both speed and capacity into laptops.

While Intel and AMD battle for the top two spots in the x86 microprocessor market, the third player, Via Technologies, saw a slip in its already-marginal market share, but it isn't ready to fold, research firm IDC said on Thursday.
Worldwide x86 processor shipments during the fourth quarter last year totaled 96.9 million, and Via's x86 shipments totaled only 80,000 units, IDC said. In the previous year's fourth quarter, Via had a market share of 0.3 percent and shipped 310,000 x86 PC processors.
