If you're getting sick of waiting for a slice of your very own Raspberry Pi mini-PC, fear not; the cavalry will soon be arriving thanks to an unexpected rival: Via, the longtime mobo makers. Yesterday, the company announced its Pi-like "APC 8750" board, a $50 Android-powered PC complete with processor, memory and a host of I/O ports.

While Intel and AMD battle for the top two spots in the x86 microprocessor market, the third player, Via Technologies, saw a slip in its already-marginal market share, but it isn't ready to fold, research firm IDC said on Thursday.
Worldwide x86 processor shipments during the fourth quarter last year totaled 96.9 million, and Via's x86 shipments totaled only 80,000 units, IDC said. In the previous year's fourth quarter, Via had a market share of 0.3 percent and shipped 310,000 x86 PC processors.

VIA Technologies is unleashing its legal beagles at Apple for allegedly infringing on three microprocessor-related patents and has filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) and the U.S. District Court of Delaware. The patent infringement allegations extend to Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Apple TV devices, as well as associated software.

Taiwanese chipmaker VIA Technologies has filed a patent infringement suit against Apple, Bloomberg reports. The case was submitted yesterday through a federal court in Wilmington, Delaware, and accuses Apple of violating three US patents related to microprocessors. "The products at issue generally concern microprocessors included in a variety of electronic products such as certain smartphones, tablet computers, portable media players and other computing devices," VIA court documents read.

Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC has made a move to purchase S3 Graphics from parent company VIA and an investment firm. S3 Graphics develops graphics visualization technologies that are used in PCs, video game consoles, and mobile devices.
S3 recently made the news in a patent lawsuit against Apple that ended with the court ruling in S3 Graphics' favor on two counts. The $300 million that HTC is spending on S3 Graphics buys it the entire company, with its experienced team of developers, along with a suite of patents and intellectual property relating to graphics development.
