Intel says Android not ready for multiple-core processors

Intel says Android not ready for multiple-core processors

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

There you are with your Android phone sporting a dual-core processor and you're wondering why sometimes the software isn't as snappy as you'd like it to be. According to testing conducted by Intel, not only is Android not ready for multiple-core processors, having more than one core could actually be harming Android performance.
Inet says that it wasn't until April 2011 when Android 2.3.4 became available that the OS was really ready to embrace dual-core processors. Before that, you had Android devices shipping with dual-core power that was not being taken advantage of by the OS. Mike Bell, GM of Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group, says that the thread-scheduler on Android is not ready ...

Intel releases native x86 Android 4.0 emulator for faster app debugging

Intel releases native x86 Android 4.0 emulator for faster app debugging

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Android developers have gotten a nice surprise today: an Android 4.0 x86 image has been released for the platform's software development kit. For the vast majority of people developing on computers that use x86 processors, the update will let the emulator run at native speeds and with fewer bugs, since it will be running native x86 code rather than code from the ARM platform. Developers can install it by refreshing the SDK Manager, then selecting the x86 image under Android 4.0.3. Downloading the image may take some time due to high demand, though. For developers, this means a better system for building and testing apps. Intel's x86 architecture is ubiquitous, and this upgrade will complemen...

HP reportedly planning Windows 8 tablets using Intel and Qualcomm processors

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

HP CEO Meg Whitman recently told investors that the company will be shipping Windows 8 products by the end of the year, and now CNET is reporting some possible details about its tablet plans. According to the site, HP is working on at least three different Windows 8 tablets, powered by chips from Intel and Qualcomm. The two Intel models are said to utilize the chipmaker's 32nm Atom Clover Trail platform, and will come in two distinct form factors. The first is reportedly a laptop / tablet hybrid — a device type that some of HP's competitors believe in — while the second is a more traditional tablet aimed at business customers. The third product is said to be powered by a Qualcomm processor, ...

Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets to struggle for sub-$600 pricing?

Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets to struggle for sub-$600 pricing?

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Microsoft has a big battle ahead to overcome the overwhelming popularity of the iPad on the tablet computing front, and its Intel-powered slates might be starting at a distinct disadvantage if a DigiTimes report is to be believed. The site indicates that neither Intel nor Microsoft are willing to cut their prices to help manufacturers, the former providing the Clover Trail hardware and the latter the Windows 8 software, which could see these machines starting at $599 and going way up from there. This could send manufacturers looking for lesser-expensive ARM-powered hardware, creating tablets incapable of executing the current gamut of x86 Windows software. Will users pay a premium for app co...

Intel promotes Windows 8 ultrabooks, touchscreen tech at CES

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG1

Intel has previewed the capabilities of Windows 8-based ultrabooks, some of which take advantage of touchscreen technology and voice recognition. The chip maker suggests more than 75 ultrabook designs will arrive on the market this year, as the company's third-generation Core-series processors become available this spring.
Intel vice president Mooly Eden demonstrated a unique ultrabook prototype, known as the Nikiski, that features a transparent touchpad that extends most of the way across the space below the keyboard. The transparent surface enables users to close the notebook and still view content, such as news feeds and calendar entries, on a portion of the display.

Atom chip on Android smartphones expected at CES

Atom chip on Android smartphones expected at CES

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

LG Electronics and Samsung are expected to unveil Android smartphones next week that use Intel's latest Atom chip, dubbed Medfield, analysts said. The move, if it pans out, could portend a shift away from ARM-based chips, which are in 95 percent of smartphones.
The arrival of Atom-based smartphones at the International CES show in Las Vegas would join Google and Intel at the hip, said Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates. With Google in the midst of acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, at least some Motorola smartphones could be soon running Atom chips, as well.

Intel Android smartphone and tablet prototypes tested by MIT, looking promising

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Intel's 32nm Medfield system-on-chip has been teased all year as the platform for the company's big leap into mobile devices, and now we finally have some real hands-on feedback to report about it. The MIT Technology Review team was allowed to have a brief play with a pair of Medfield prototypes running Android — a phone similar in size to the iPhone that was on Gingerbread and a tablet close to the iPad 2 in thickness running Ice Cream Sandwich — and came away impressed. Responsiveness, we're told, was pleasing on both devices, though it was the ICS-equipped tablet that invited the greatest praise in being evidently faster and smoother than its Honeycomb brethren. The phone was described as...

HTC rumored to work on Android devices with Intel chips inside

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

Just as there will be Windows 8 tablets with NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments ARM-based chips, so goes the other way around - we will see Android devices, powered by Intel silicon.
In fact, rumors suggest that Intel employees have been walking the floors at IDF 2012 with HTC-made devices in hand running Android, but powered by an Intel chipset, which will be previewed around CES or MWC time early 2012.
Google's Andy Rubin announced a strategic move the other day to support Intel's x86 architecture in the next versions of Android, and the announcement was scheduled for the same day when Microsoft introduced Windows 8 running on ARMed tablets.
Now what is HTC doing sniffing around and ...

Windows ARM support not an issue for Intel

Windows ARM support not an issue for Intel

Posted on Sep 16, 2011 by MG1

Intel CEO, Paul Otellini, remains bullish about the prospect of Microsoft supporting the ARM architecture in the upcoming release of Windows 8.
Down the coast in Anaheim Microsoft is hosting the Build Conference as Intel runs its IDF2011 conference here in San Francisco. There it was talking up its support for the ARM micro-architecture in the next version of the Windows OS.
Otellini though is unconcerned with the prospect of added competition in the Windows space.
"We've always had to have the best chip to run on Microsoft software," he said.
"When you have the best chip you win."
It's not just the architecture that's important though as there's a vast library of legacy applications out the...

Intel intros DeepSafe CPU security, will optimize Android for x86

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Putting its $7.68 billion acquisition to use, Intel has announced a new processor technology it's deemed "one of the biggest innovations" in the security industry's history. Called McAfee DeepSafe, the framework sits below your operating system and will allow McAfee to develop hardware-assisted security features.
Intel didn't provide many details, but the goal is to detect and thwart malware that can evade your OS-level antivirus. In one example, DeepSafe stopped a zero-day rootkit called Agony from infecting a system in real time. More details should arise soon as DeepSafe is expected to ship in products later this year.
"When you operate below the operating system level you get a unique ad...
