Intel Spends $375 Million Beefing Up Wireless Patent Portfolio

Certain InterDigital subsidiaries will receive a $375 million cash payment from Intel in exchange for handing over roughly 1,700 patents and patent applications related to 3G, Long Term Evolution (LTE), and 802.11 wireless technologies. Intel plans to use its newly acquired wireless patents to help support its strategic investments in the mobile segment, the Santa Clara chip maker said. By adding to its already large and diverse patent portfolio, Intel also puts itself in better position to avoid costly lawsuits.

InterDigital, who does genuine research on wireless technology and then lives off the patent royalties, is going to sell roughly 1,700 patents to Intel for a cool $375 million. Said patents are “primarily related to 3G, LTE and 802.11 technologies.” Considering that Intel picked up Infineon’s wireless unit for $1.4 billion two years ago, it’s telling that Intel is blowing over a third of a billion dollars on what’s essentially legal documents. Intel’s Next Unit of Computing to cost around $400

Intel seems to be dabbling in a few different areas right now. The company has the desktop and laptop market locked down pretty tight, and is now attempting to breach the mobile space with Medfield, and may be looking to target miniature computers and HTPCs next. Back in April the company unveiled its “Next Unit of Computing” box, which packed a Sandy Bridge chip, Thunderbolt, HDMI, and USB all into a 10cm by 10cm box, and now rough pricing has been revealed.

Intel says Android not ready for multiple-core processors

There you are with your Android phone sporting a dual-core processor and you're wondering why sometimes the software isn't as snappy as you'd like it to be. According to testing conducted by Intel, not only is Android not ready for multiple-core processors, having more than one core could actually be harming Android performance.

Gigabyte Boasts 7.032 GHz CPU Clock Record on Ivy Bridge

In our recent overclocking review of the Core i7-3770K, we showed what Ivy Bridge can do on air and its limitations compared to previous Sandy Bridge CPUs. Gigabyte, with the help of overclocker HiCookie, set out to show what the Core i7-3770K can do on liquid nitrogen cooling and Gigabyte motherboards. HiCookie was able to surpass the 7.0 GHz milestone using a Core i7 3770K processor, while pushing the Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H motherboard to a fully validated 7.032 GHz using liquid nitrogen cooling. This is regarded as the current highest Ivy Bridge CPU frequency and a world record according to global overclocking website HWBot.org.

Intel launches Ivy Bridge laptop chips, changes ultrabook requirements

Those chips that launched last month were high-powered versions, not the power sipping, miserly chips that would make their way into notebooks and ultrabooks looking for performance and long battery life. Intel Core i7 3770K Breaks 7 GHz Mark

An overclocker from Taiwan by the name of HiCookie has overclocked Intel Core i7 3770K E1 (Ivy Bridge) past 7 GHz. He used Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard, Corsair memory, Corsair AX 1200 power supply and of course liquid nitrogen to achieve this. 3 cores were disabled while HT was enabled, FSB was 111.63 MHz, 63x multiplier was used and the core voltage was a whopping 1.956V. Before this, the record was held by nkdfactory from Japan who achieved the highest frequency of 6931.1 MHz.

Intel Ultrabooks Will Get Free Wi-Fi Almost Everywhere and Auto-Update from Your Bag

The "ultrabook" designation doesn't mean too too much, since manufacturers constantly look for ways to skirt around Intel's sorta-arbitrary specs. But just being on Team Intel's gonna get a few new perks, with its new deal to get all ultrabooks free, automatic, no-login access to 5.6 million Wi-Fi hotspots.
The deal with Devicescape will use a custom DNS query to let ultrabooks log in without going through the whole process. That'll allow Intel's autoupdating Smart Connect tech to, say, refresh your email or RSS or Twitter feed while you're at a coffee shop, without ever taking your laptop out of your bag. Pretty cool!

Intel details 14 dual-core Ivy Bridge processors ahead of Computex

Intel announced its quad-core Ivy Bridge processors in April, but we've known that dual-core CPUs must be on the way too. And alas, the chip maker does have some up its sleeve -- 14, to be exact. Core i5 and Core i7 versions will be the first to ship, with Core i3 processors launching later this year along with new Pentiums and Celerons. Of the 14 dual-core processors, six are desktop-grade. The rest are mobile, though four are ultra-low voltage (which will be denoted by a U at the end of their name). Orange has started sending out invites for its press event, when it will launch its first Intel-powered Android smartphone – Orange Santa Clara. The event takes place on Thursday, May 31st and the mentioned device already got a page at the carrier’s “coming soon” section.
Thus far Orange-branded phones were low-to-mid end devices, offering decent value for the money to folks on a budget. Will something change with the first Intel-powered smartphone?

Unreleased Mobile Ivy Bridge CPUs Spotted

CPU World published box numbers for the Core i7-3740QM and i7-3840QM, which will be positioned to support the current 2.6 GHz 3720QM and 2.7 GHz 3820QM models that are positioned on the high-end of the family.
There is not much room for clock speed tweaks for the 3740QM and 3840QM as the flagship model 3920XM already runs at 2.9 GHz. Still, it is pure speculation to talk about clock speeds at this time as Intel denied to comment on the unreleased CPUs. However, the 3840QM could ring in at 2.8 GHz.

Android developers have gotten a nice surprise today: an Android 4.0 x86 image has been released for the platform's software development kit. For the vast majority of people developing on computers that use x86 processors, the update will let the emulator run at native speeds and with fewer bugs, since it will be running native x86 code rather than code from the ARM platform. Intel Readies Core i5-3350P, Ivy Bridge Quad-Core sans Integrated Graphics

Intel is working on a strange new processor model based on its new 22 nm "Ivy Bridge" silicon, the Core i5-3350P. This part is reported to lack integrated graphics, much like the Core i5-2380P and i5-2450P, from the previous generation. The new i5-3350P will be a quad-core chip, with 6 MB of L3 cache. It comes with a base clock speed of 3.10 GHz, and 3.30 GHz Turbo Boost speed. Like every other Core i5 quad-core processor, it lacks HyperThreading. The lack of integrated graphics also takes a toll on its TDP rating, which is down to 69W. The new Core i5-3350P is expected to be launched in Q3, 2012.

Intel Hopes New Batteries Can Reduce Ultrabook Cost

According to a report out of Taiwan, Intel is apparently looking at Sanyo's and BAK's 16650 cylindrical battery as well as prismatic lithium-ion batteries.
The cylindrical battery seems to be the device of choice due to its low cost, but its diameter of 16 mm makes it a challenge to be built into Ultrabooks, which, by Intel's definition, need to be less than 21 mm thick. A problem may also be that the market for these batteries is controlled by Sanyo and BAK and the supply is very limited. Prismatic are more expensive, but are only 5 to 6 mm thick, while using a greater footprint of 60 x 80 mm.

Intel will see its processor house in 1 in 10 mobile devices by 2015, as it slowly claws into ARM's market. Intel is the new kid on the block when it comes to mobile processors, with British firm ARM Holdings all but dominating the market at the current time. However Intel is determined to produce mobile processors which are so good that Apple won't be able to resist using them in its iPhone and iPad ranges.
