The AMD processors can run high clock frequencies, this one it even beyond that, 8805.64 MHz, to be precise.
A Thai overclocker under the name "ksin" took dibs and was to able to run the chip using a base clock speed of 303.29 MHz, and multiplier of 29.0x. A scorching 1.86V core voltage was used.
On the motherboards side of things an ASUS Crosshair V Formula was used with 4 GB (2x 2 GB) of ADATA memory (1417 MHz). No details such as cooling has been shared, but you can betcha it was sub-zero.

Interesting news from TPU today, they noticed via Donim haber that dual-GPU based Radeon HD 7970 X2 cards from board parters might be in the works. That means that the board partners are working on their own dual-GPU solutions based on Tahiti GPUs.
AMD is expected to release a RadeoN HD 7990, but that one seems to be delayed.Initially we expected that one to be released during Computex 2012, but so far nothing substantial has surfaced. DonanimHaber now reports that manufacturers are tired of waiting for actual Radeon HD 7990 model from AMD, so they will come up with something new.

AMD to Push Out Power Friendly Processors for Windows 8 Tablets

AMD to Push Out Power Friendly Processors for Windows 8 Tablets

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

It hasn't been much of an ARM wrestle in the tablet space up to this point, and it's not because AMD and Intel haven't talked the talk. For the most part, they just haven't walked the walk, which has allowed ARM to dominate the category. That could change once Windows 8 comes into view in a few months, and if Microsoft's upcoming Metro infused OS proves popular on touchscreen tablets, you can expect a dogfight between AMD and Intel.

AMD FX-8150 Price Drops Like a Rock

AMD FX-8150 Price Drops Like a Rock

Posted on Apr 26, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: CPUAMDFX-8150

AMD's FX-8150 was only mildly competitive with previous-generation Intel processors such as the Core i5-2500K, but to make matters worse, Intel launched its new "Ivy Bridge" Core processors that promise small but sizable performance improvements over its predecessors. The Core i5-3570K, for example, will be priced on par with FX-8150, if its price is left to itself. AMD has apparently cut prices of FX-8150 in Europe. Price aggregator Geizhals shows that the FX-8150 is available for as low as 179 EUR (incl. taxes). The PIB chip is now packed in a more cost-effective paperboard box, instead of the tin box AMD launched the SKU with.

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

Even as NVIDIA is on the verge of unveiling its GeForce GTX 690 dual-GPU graphics card, at GeForce LAN Shanghai, AMD is in no hurry. Its competitive graphics card to the GTX 690, the Radeon HD 7990 "New Zealand", will be kept under the wraps till Computex 2012 (early June), DonanimHaber learned. Radeon HD 7990 will pack two completely unlocked 28 nm "Tahiti" GPUs, a total of 4,096 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, 6 GB of GDDR5 memory, and the ability to drive 6-monitor Eyefinity, out of the box.

AMD Launches its Radeon HD 7900M Series Mobile Discrete GPUs

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Graphic CardsAMD

AMD kicked off its Radeon HD 7900M series mobile discrete GPU family with the Radeon HD 7970M. Based on the 28 nm "Pitcairn" silicon, the HD 7970M is near-identical in specifications to desktop Radeon HD 7870, except for slightly lower GPU core clock speeds. The HD 7970M packs 1280 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, 80 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 2 GB of memory. Its core is clocked at 850 MHz, with 1200 MHz (4.80 GHz GDDR5 effective) memory clock speed, amounting to 153.6 GB/s memory bandwidth. The Radeon HD 7970M, apart from the ZeroCore technology carried over from its desktop counterparts, also packs a feature called AMD Enduro Technology, which "se...

The next "AMD Tuesday" is the coming one, on which the company plans to launch Radeon HD 7970M, its next high-end discrete GPU for notebooks. Codenamed "Thames", the HD 7970M will be based on the 28 nm "Pitcairn" silicon, on which desktop Radeon HD 7800 series, is also based. When launched, the HD 7970M could become the fastest notebook discrete GPU, since NVIDIA's fastest discrete notebook GPU, and the GeForce GTX 675M are based on previous-generation 40 nm GF114, over which Pitcairn already established a performance lead, in the desktop front. We are hearing that notebook vendors already have their designs based on this chip ready in the pipeline.

AMD Reports $590 Million Loss in Q1, Still Thumbs Nose at Wall Street

AMD Reports $590 Million Loss in Q1, Still Thumbs Nose at Wall Street

Scanning AMD's financial report for the first quarter of 2012, you would think the Sunnyvale chip maker is in big trouble. Revenue was $1.59 billion, a nice number if not for the fact that it represents a net loss of $590 million, or $0.80 cents per share, along with an operating loss of $580 million. That's a 6 percent sequential decrease and a 2 percent decrease year-over-year. Non-GAAP earnings were $0.12 a share. So why wouldn't investors want to hit the panic button?
For starters, AMD topped Wall Street's expectations. Wall Street was bracing itself for AMD to report non-GAAP earnings of $0.09 cents a share on revenue of $1.56 billion, so things didn't shake out as bad as they could hav...

Team Katana Japan Sets 3DMark 11 Extreme Record with 1747/7884 MHz @ 1.895V HD 7970

Posted on Apr 19, 2012 by MG1

Team Katana Japan set a new 3DMark 11 Extreme Preset single-GPU world record using their Radeon HD 7970 graphics card clocked at staggering clock speeds 1747 MHz (core) and 1971 MHz or 7.884 GHz effective (memory). These clock speeds were sustained using volt-modding (to maintain the right voltage stable), and liquid nitrogen cooling. The volt-mod was designed to override the OCP (over-current protection), and over-heat protection of the graphics card's VRM. The target core voltage was 1.895V.
The setup went on to bag a 3DMark 11 Extreme Preset single-GPU world record, where it scored X3757.69 points, bagging 1st Rank in HWBOT's "GLOBAL 1X GPU RANK" and "Radeon HD 7970 rank". Find the valida...

Just weeks after AMD's CTO of graphics Eric Demers left the company to pursue other opportunities, the company's Director of the Client Technology Unit, Godfrey Cheng, has also jumped ship after serving 12 years.
Cheng was recently part of AMD's high-profile Llano launch. But long before that, he was one of the principle players behind ATI's All-in-Wonder series of graphics cards and TV tuners which debut in 1996. He headed the project from 1998 to 2006, and then moved over to gaming technologies like Avivo and CrossFire for a year as ATI's Director of Marketing, Platform Technologies.

While Intel and AMD battle for the top two spots in the x86 microprocessor market, the third player, Via Technologies, saw a slip in its already-marginal market share, but it isn't ready to fold, research firm IDC said on Thursday.
Worldwide x86 processor shipments during the fourth quarter last year totaled 96.9 million, and Via's x86 shipments totaled only 80,000 units, IDC said. In the previous year's fourth quarter, Via had a market share of 0.3 percent and shipped 310,000 x86 PC processors.
