Sony promised that its entire 2011 line of Android smartphones would be receiving an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, and while it’s been a long wait, the company is starting to deliver. Sony has taken to its user forums to announce that the rest of the 2011 line should be seeing the ICS updates very shortly, with Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo users already reporting that the upgrade has arrived.

Google tries again with a more PC-like Chrome OS

Samsung will launch this week two new Chrome OS-based computers, a laptop and desktop that have been designed to be significantly faster and more versatile than previous models. The new Samsung models will be available online today in the U.S. and May 30 in the U.K., and they will be for sale also at select Best Buy stores in the U.S. in June.
Along with the new Samsung computers, Google is announcing enhancements to Chrome OS and Google Apps, including tight integration with Google Drive and -- something previously promised -- the ability to edit Google Docs documents offline.

The 7-inch ASUS Eee Pad MeMO ME370T we saw in early prototype form during CES just passed through the FCC. It's still only showing WiFi radios with no trace of a cellular connection, although if it's going to be the $249 standard bearer NVIDIA and ASUS were so excited about, that's to be expected. A juicier rumor that has surfaced in the intervening period however, suggests this device will actually be released as a Google Nexus 7-inch tablet (or just sold from a Google store), and could even feature the next version of Android, codenamed Jelly Bean. Motorola is finally getting ready to unleash Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on its Droid Razr line of devices.
A series of videos released today from Motorola Japan show off the new OS running on a Droid Razr device.
Motorola provided its own skin for Ice Cream Sandwich, replacing most of the smartphone's icons and adding some useful new features.
The biggest change is that four shortcuts now appear on the phone's lock screen, with Motorola adding messaging and dialer shortcuts to the standard Android 4.0 camera and unlock options.

Users of the HTC Sensation XL, mostly in Europe and Asia, have received the Android 4.0 update over the air. To make sure you have received it, go to Settings > About phone > Software updates and hit that button. You will be downloading a 200MB package which means those with a strict data cap might want to wait for a Wi-Fi connection before installing it. The exact build that you will be updating to is Android 4.0.3 while HTC Sense remains at 3.6. This brings users some of the new ICS features like Face Unlock, the new app dock and the multi-tasking menu. What you won't be getting is the new UI found on devices carrying HTC Sense 4.0.

CyanogenMod Android hack hits 2 million installs

The hacked and completely fan-made Android-based ROM known as CyanogenMod has reached a massive 2 million installs this week, reminding us that it is far and away the most successful Android 3rd party system of all time. This update comes only a few months after CyanogenMod reached 1 million installs, the Google mobile OS-based hack growing now as what appears to be an exponential rate. The install rate is tracked by the CyanogenMod team’s own CM stat tracker which shows also that the last 24 hours have had an additional 11,294 installs as well.

Have we finally found a tablet match for the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note? ViewSonic sent around a teaser for its "Touch and Connect" series prototypes, including a 22-inch "smart business tablet monitor," powered by what appears to be Ice Cream Sandwich. The giant touch-enabled device will be joined by a Windows 8 multi-touch display, new cloud computing solutions, high-end laser projectors and some interactive electronic billboards -- all set to make their debut on June 5th at Computex. Blimey. After a concerted effort to right its wrongs has had us retracting our previously harsh words about Sony and its Android updates, things are all starting to unravel once again. A bagful of Sony Ericsson handsets are still destined for an Android 4.0 upgrade, but has the Xperia Play just fallen off the wagon?
The Sony Mobile website’s list of upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates is missing one key player. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seems to have slipped off the list, which still includes the likes of the Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc and Xperia Ray.

Android developers have gotten a nice surprise today: an Android 4.0 x86 image has been released for the platform's software development kit. For the vast majority of people developing on computers that use x86 processors, the update will let the emulator run at native speeds and with fewer bugs, since it will be running native x86 code rather than code from the ARM platform. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, the mobile operating systems held shares of 59.0% and 23.0% respectively of the 152.3 million smartphones shipped in 1Q12.

At one time the Enyo app framework was supposed to help webOS run faster and on a wider variety of devices, but as HP continues to struggle, reports have surfaced from The Verge and AllThingsD that much of the team behind it, including leader Matthew McNulty, has been hired away by Google. Numbering a half dozen or so, the immediate danger is the effect this might have on HP's efforts to open source webOS, but in a statement the company indicated it remains on track and will stick to the roadmap it announced in January. Android Malware Project to foster security collaboration
