Back when it was unveiled at IFA 2011, Sammy's famed phablet was more of an attractive oddity than sure hit. Skip to now, and that 5.3-incher's not only taken the European continent by storm, it's also made inroads onto these American shores via AT&T. In keeping with the open source embrace begun last October, the OEM's once again offering up the device's kernel code, this time for the skinned ICS OS unlocked versions currently run. Android Malware Genome Project wants to fight malware by understanding it

Android malware is increasingly becoming a concern for users, but a team of researchers at North Carolina State University is hoping to help fight the problem by understanding it better. Lead by assistant professor Xuxian Jiang, the Android Malware Genome Project is collecting samples of Android malware in order to categorize them and release the code to other researchers. So far over 1,200 samples have been collected and organized based on features like how they're downloaded and activated. Remember the leaked images of Microsoft Office for the iPad we saw a few months ago? The ones that Microsoft claimed were fakes? We were suspicious about their denials at the time, and it turns out the only “fakers” may have been Microsoft’s PR team. According to “a reliable source” speaking to BGR, Microsoft will be releasing tablet versions of Microsoft Office not just for the iPad, but for Android as well this November.

Jury issues verdict in Android suit, finds that Google doesn't infringe Oracle patents

It appears that the jury has come to a conclusion in the Oracle v. Google trial, determining that Android does not infringe Oracle patents. Judge William Alsup of the US District Court for Northern California exonerated the search giant following a trial that lasted three weeks, ruling that Google did not infringe on six claims in US Patent RE38,104, along two claims in US Patent 6,061,520. Jurors were dismissed following today's ruling, with the trial's damages phase reportedly set to begin on Tuesday.

Good news if you own an Amaze 4G smartphone from HTC. For those of you who do, HTC just released an update to Android 4.0, the latest and greatest open source mobile operating system from Google more deliciously known as Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). Owners of HTC's Thunderbolt and Desire HD smartphones aren't as lucky, having to wait perhaps until August, or longer, receive an ICS upgrade, according to HTC's newly published Android 4.0 roadmap.

Mobile security researchers present Android Malware Genome Project at IEEE

Android's openness, combined with its popularity, has lead a few of the developer faithful astray -- with malware being a legitimate concern for the mobile operating system. Motorola recently updated its Android release timeline and revealed that certain devices will remain on Android 2.3 rather than receiving an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The handsets in question are both modern and more than capable of running the latest Android operating system, however the vendor claims the latest software won’t “improve” the devices, and that’s why updates will not be released. Both the DROID 3 and DROID X2 will remain on Android 2.3, despite the fact that both handsets run dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors and were released not even a year ago.

That the LG Optimus 2X is going to get Ice Cream Sandwich eventually is something that we know already. After all, the company itself made the announcement of an upcoming ICS update quite a while ago. However, we didn't have much information as to when the said update was going to be released... until today.
As stated by LG Mobile Singapore on Facebook, the LG Optimus 2X Android 4.0 update will start rolling out in Q3 of this year. In other words, there will be no Ice Cream Sandwich for LG Optimus 2X owners for at least another one and a half to three and a half months. Or at least not for those located in Singapore and the surrounding markets.

You know how many Android developers complain about fragmentation? Yeah, this is what fragmentation looks like.
Animoca, a Hong Kong mobile app developer that has seen more than 70 million downloads, says it does quality assurance testing with about 400 Android devices. Again, that’s testing with four hundred different phones and tablets for every app they ship!
The photo above is just a sampling of Animoca’s fleet of Android test units. Yat Siu, who is CEO of Animoca’s parent company Outblaze, snapped and posted it from Outblaze’s headquarters today. In total, Siu says their studio has detected about 600 unique Android devices on their network.

If you play games on the iPhone, you are probably familiar with the Game Center, the social hub and that links players together so they can compete for high scores, show off trophies, invite people to multi-person games, and otherwise knits together the iOS game ecosystem. Windows Phone, while having a smaller gaming ecosystem, likewise has Xbox Live to provide a similar service. Google raises concerns over browser restrictions in Windows 8

Google has agreed with Mozilla's stance that Microsoft is blocking browser choice in the next-generation Windows platforms. The search giant says that it shares "the concerns Mozilla has raised regarding the Windows 8 environment restricting user choice and innovation." Mozilla's complaint was specifically targeted at the ARM-based Windows RT, and its not clear if Google's mention of "Windows 8" is simply poorly worded or if it has broader issues with the Metro environment. As part of its announcement of the new version of Google+ for the Apple iPhone, Google dropped a hint that an equally sexy new G+ client for the Android platform would be available in a few weeks. Google also noted that the Android version would have a few extra surprises in it. Considering how good the iPhone version looks, and the fact that the Android mobile client already has support for rich web snippets when sharing, we expect the new app to be very cool indeed.
