Sony Xperia Play Android 4 update canceled, gaming to blame

Sony Xperia Play Android 4 update canceled, gaming to blame

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG2

Sony Mobile on Friday confirmed that it no longer plans to update its Xperia Play smartphone to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich due to compatibility issues with the device’s gaming features, Phone Scoop reported. “Ice Cream Sandwich demands more from the phone hardware than Gingerbread,” a Sony spokesperson said. “Android 4.0 is a more powerful OS and thus, more resource intensive – applications require more RAM, CPU power, and network bandwidth. From internal testing and feedback from the developer community on the beta ROM software release, we have seen a significant decline in user experience when running high performance games, as they are more demanding on the hardware. As gaming content...

Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Blimey. After a concerted effort to right its wrongs has had us retracting our previously harsh words about Sony and its Android updates, things are all starting to unravel once again. A bagful of Sony Ericsson handsets are still destined for an Android 4.0 upgrade, but has the Xperia Play just fallen off the wagon?
The Sony Mobile website’s list of upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates is missing one key player. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seems to have slipped off the list, which still includes the likes of the Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc and Xperia Ray.

Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaks for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaks for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

The official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY will not be out until later this spring, but if you are eager to have a taste of Google's latest and greatest, you can try out this early ICS ROM that just surfaced on the web, courtesy of the guys at XDA Developers. The ROM is based on Android 4.0.3 and retains most of the looks and feel of the stock Ice Cream Sandwich experience. Judging by what the folks are saying in the comments, albeit being an early build, the ROM is still stable enough to be taken for a quick spin. Of course, there are things that don't work yet, such as the smartphone's camera, the touchpads, and the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, bu....

OnLive heads to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

OnLive heads to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play may have debuted to lukewarm reviews in 2011, but game streaming king OnLive has given it a reprieve by making its service available on the smartphone.
OnLive has managed to show the world that cloud gaming can actually work – especially on the big screen, where all you have to do is plug in its receiver to stream content.
Its launch on handheld devices earlier this month, however, was a harder sell. Yes you play premium games on a tablet but you have to use either fiddly virtual controls or and external joypad, which is decent but not perfect when your screen is no bigger than 10 inches.
Enter the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the only smartphone around with analo...

Xperia Play now has 200 games available to download, some are free for the holidays

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

When the Xperia Play smartphone / gaming console hybrid launched in March, there were 60 games available for download; eight months later, Sony Ericsson has reached 200 games optimized for the device. We're glad to see the company's stayed devoted to the product and platform, but the 200 number might be a bit misleading — it includes a number of standard Android games that have been only slightly adapted for Sony Ericsson's device, and the number of Xperia Play-exclusive games is still quite small, though it includes good games like FIFA 12 and Dead Space. The company's made some strides toward getting PlayStation games onto the device, but those strides have been few and far between.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY sales "meeting expectations"?

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG3

Well what do you know – despite lacking a dual-core processor, it seems Sony Ericsson managed to move enough Xperia Play units to say it is “meeting expectations.” Since we don’t have their figures, we can only speculate what that phrase exactly means.

Sony Ericsson scores exclusive launch deal for FIFA 12

Posted on Aug 25, 2011 by MG15

Sony Ericsson proudly announced a limited time exclusive agreement with EA Mobile to deliver the much anticipated EA SPORTS FIFA 12 on Android. Obviously the game will be optimized for the Xperia PLAY, allowing players to use the smartphone’s gamepad instead of virtual on-screen controls.
Then, after that exclusive launch period ends (we’re most likely talking about weeks here), FIFA 12 will also be available on the “regular” Android Market.

Vodafone lists Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray as ‘coming soon’

Posted on Aug 19, 2011 by MG3

Not exactly a release date, but news nonetheless. Vodafone has just launched a sign up page for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray. The not-so-Neo Xperia Ray had us stumped in June, but we’ve found much to love in the bite-sized handset since. With a 3.3-inch FWVGA resolution touch screen and Gingerbread on-board, this could be one of Android’s finest value handsets to date.

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, arc, neo and pro to get updated to Android 2.3.4 soon?

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Sony's quartet of high-end Android smartphones including the Xperia arc, play, neo and pro might just have gotten updated to Android 2.3.3, but the engineers over at SE are already testing and working on delivering the latest version of Android Gingerbread, 2.3.4, according to an unspecified source quoted by SE-centric Semcblog. The update will bring bug fixes, but it will also patch some security holes and add new functionalities like Sony's audio filtering xLOUD technology to the handsets. It's expected to roll out widely in October.
The latest Gingerbread is not coming to earlier models like the X10 mini, X10 mini pro or the X8, but we already know that an unspecified version of Gingerbre...
