E3 to reveal PlayStation 4 ‘same day’ as Xbox 720

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

This week we’ve got several sources speaking on what will be happening later this year when the two titans of console: Sony and Microsoft, go head to head with reveals of their next-generation gaming systems. One source speaking with vg247 this morning about the situation is noting that fans “should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.” Meanwhile our own source corroborates this possibility saying that the keynotes revealing these next two systems “may be happening on the same day.”

Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi's Japan Display merger begins production

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Japan Display, the merger between Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi's small and medium-sized touchscreen LCD manufacturing divisions, began operations on April 1st. The relationship between the three companies was announced in August last year, before being formalized in November. Each of the manufacturers has a 10 percent stake in the new firm, with the remaining 70 percent held by the largely government-funded Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). Including the 200 billion yen (around $2.4 billion) investment by INCJ, Japan Display currently holds 230 billion yen (just over $2.8 billion) in capital.

Over the weekend, Inno3D held a lavish GeForce GTX 680 launch event, in Hong Kong, even though it announced its GeForce GTX 680 products with other partners, on March 22. We know Inno3D has a custom-design liquid-cooled GTX 680 in the works, it obviously has an NVIDIA reference-design model, too; but at the launch event, Inno3D unveiled its third GTX 680 product, an air-cooled factory-overclocked model, called the Inno3D GeForce GTX 680 TwinFan.

HTC EVO One revealed, Sprint announcement coming Wednesday?

HTC EVO One revealed, Sprint announcement coming Wednesday?

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

PocketNow has got its hands on the first press shot of HTC's EVO One, which looks set to be unveiled for Sprint at an event being held by the two companies tomorrow. It's the middle phone in that shot you see above, and while we can't read too much into the picture it certainly seems to fit in right next to AT&T's One X and T-Mobile's One S, both of which we gave pretty glowing reviews to yesterday.
AndroidCentral's sources say that the phone features a 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED screen (which seems odd given the quality of the One X's 720p Super LCD 2), LTE, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, which at least on paper sounds like an offering unlikely to disappoint Sprint c...

ARM seeks better security for connected devices, teams up with Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient

ARM seeks better security for connected devices, teams up with Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

ARM is famous for its low-power chip designs, Gemalto is known for its NFC security features, and Giesecke & Devrient brings some nice nano-SIM notoriety to the table. As a trio, these companies are seeking regulatory approval for a new security standard that could be used on a wide range of web-connected devices, including tablets, smart TVs, game consoles and smartphones. There's little detail on the new technology itself, other than that it's based on ARM's TrustZone hardware-based security, which has been around for a while and is built into every ARM Cortex-A series processor. In any case, creating the technology is the easy bit these days -- it's the approval and licensing issues that'...

Canon EOS 60Da lets you shoot the night sky with its modified IR filter

Canon EOS 60Da lets you shoot the night sky with its modified IR filter

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Canon has announced the EOS 60Da DSLR, a modified version of its 60D exclusively designed for astrophotography. The camera uses an infrared filter that triples the transmission of light at the Hydrogen Alpha line wavelength, allowing for photographs of "red hydrogen emission" phenomena like the Horsehead and Rosette nebulae. Normal IR filters are tuned for the human eye, but block out wavelengths that many astral objects emit light along — while the 60Da's filter fixes this, Canon doesn't recommend its use for standard photography as your images will have a reddish color balance.

MPAA thinks Megaupload would restart if it reclaimed servers

MPAA thinks Megaupload would restart if it reclaimed servers

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

The movie industry watchdog MPAA has asked the court that is presiding over the Megaupload case to prevent the file locker site from buying the servers, and the data stored on them, from the hosting site where the equipment and data currently reside. The motion comes after Virginia-based Carpathia, which owns the servers, made an emergency motion to the court, complaining that it's incurring costs of $9,000 daily in order to maintain the data. The stored information takes up 25 petabytes of space.

Nokia Maps WebGL Beta gets stereoscopic 3D option

Nokia Maps WebGL Beta gets stereoscopic 3D option

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NOKIA

Last year, Nokia introduced a version of Nokia Maps that uses WebGL to render advanced graphics instead of a browser plug-in, which meant that it wouldn't require a separate browser plug-in for 3D views. That beta has recently seen a quiet and fun little update: a 3D stereoscopic toggle that gives you a 3D experience if you have the proper glasses to see it. Nokia hasn't said much (or anything, really) about the feature yet, so we don't know if the company has pulled off "true" stereoscopic separation from 3D data — but it certainly seems as though it's doing an accurate job presenting depth and distance based on scrolling around.

Sony HXR-NX30 camcorder: built-in projector, 96GB storage for $2,500 (video)

Sony HXR-NX30 camcorder: built-in projector, 96GB storage for $2,500 (video)

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Don't worry, lone gunslingers, today isn't just about the NEX-FS700. Sony's pro range has also been bolstered with the HXR-NX30 for videographers who need to travel light. This model sacrifices interchangeable lenses in favor of a palm-friendly form factor with a 26mm-260mm (35mm equivalent) Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T fixed lens. The camera sports Sony's 'Balanced Optical SteadyShot' technology, which means both the lens and the sensor assembly are floated as a single element to minimize camera shake. Unlike that of the larger NEX-VG20, the HXR-NX30's sensor is shrunken too: it's an Exmor R CMOS that's only slightly larger than 1/3-inch. The North American NX30U variant handles 1920 x 1080 at...

Qualcomm is preparing a quad-core version of its Snapdragon S4 chip for thin and light Windows 8 laptops, which the chip maker hopes will steal some thunder from Intel's second wave of Ultrabooks due later this year.
The S4 chips will go into laptops that are thinner and lighter than Apple's MacBook Air or today's ultrabooks, according to Rob Chandhok, senior vice president at Qualcomm. Ultrabooks are being promoted by Intel as a new category of thin and light laptops.
