John Carmack says PS4, Xbox 720 nothing to be excited about

John Carmack says PS4, Xbox 720 nothing to be excited about

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 by MG1

Game development expert John Carmack believes that the next generation of video game consoles won’t be anything to write home about. Carmack said in a recent interview that he was admittedly optimistic about the increased rendering power of an Xbox 720 or PS4, but beyond that he has no grand vision of what to expect. We may be hitting the point of diminishing returns.
“Any creative vision that a designer could come up with, we can do a pretty good job representing on current generation and certainly on PC. In many ways I am not all that excited about the next generation. It will let us do everything we want to do now, with the knobs turned up,” Carmack said.
He continued, “If you take a curr...

Sony Playstation 4: includes optical drive, not download-only

Sony Playstation 4: includes optical drive, not download-only

Posted on May 31, 2012 by MG3

Sony considered removing the optical drive from its next-generation Playstation gaming console, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Japanese electronics maker decided against a download-only model, however, because “Internet connectivity is too inconsistent around the world.” Removing the optical drive would have also hurt the adoption of Blu-ray, which Sony heavily pushed with its Playstation 3. The next-generation PlayStation, codename Orbis, is rumored to launch during the holiday season of 2013. It has been reported that the system will feature an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU capable of running games at a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels.

Sony PlayStation 4 tipped for 2013

Sony PlayStation 4 tipped for 2013

Posted on May 31, 2012 by MG3

With games such as Doom 3: BFG Edition still making waves in the industry of what some would call a fading wave for console gaming, Sony’s PlayStation 4′s release in 2013 is sure to be a hit. That’s what “sources close to the matter” speaking with the Wall Street Jounral are saying in hopes that the news this week that an ultra-slick disk-less cloud-based PlayStation was being released was bashed by early critics. This situation reflects essentially what happened when the PSP Go was released, failure that it was with downloadable content only, ditching physical game units altogether.

Sony PS4 to have game-freezing adverts? Welcome to gaming hell

Sony PS4 to have game-freezing adverts? Welcome to gaming hell

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Sony’s got a track record for doing adverts rather well. Its Bravia ads in particular are pretty awe-inspiring. You know the ones with the bouncing balls and the exploding paint? Yeah. That. Thing is, that doesn’t mean that the company gets it right all the time. In fact, we’d say the power’s gone to Sony’s head, as it’s just filed a patent application to bring game-freezing adverts to its consoles. And maybe the Sony PS4…

This week we’ve got several sources speaking on what will be happening later this year when the two titans of console: Sony and Microsoft, go head to head with reveals of their next-generation gaming systems. One source speaking with vg247 this morning about the situation is noting that fans “should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.” Meanwhile our own source corroborates this possibility saying that the keynotes revealing these next two systems “may be happening on the same day.”

PlayStation 4 Concept Design, Edgy and Eco-Friendly

PlayStation 4 Concept Design, Edgy and Eco-Friendly

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Recent reports suggest that Sony’s PlayStation 4 may already be in the works with suppliers revealing that production could start by the end of 2011 with Foxconn and Pegatron at the helm of assembly. In the wake of the PlayStation Network disaster, many believe that Sony will need the PS4 to turn things around ASAP. But what might the PS4 look like?
Designer Joseph Dumary has conjured up a very futuristic-looking PS4 concept that’s also very eco-friendly—but what design concepts aren’t these days? He imagines the new console to be composed of 60% recyclable materials, to use 0 watts during standby mode, and to have a ECO Restart function that saves games, turns off the console, and can resum...
