China more aggressively blocking users who try to circumvent its Great Firewall

Posted on Apr 05, 2012 by MG1

Internet users in China have long used the Tor anonymity network as a method to get around the country's notorious firewall, but a few Swedish researchers have discovered that China is making it more difficult to surf anonymously by increasing the sophistication of its Tor-blocking tools. Tor essentially works by encrypting and randomly routing traffic through a series of relay servers around the globe. Additionally, Tor uses unlisted "bridge relays" for users to gain an additional level of anonymity when browsing — thanks to these unlisted bridges, ISPs won't be able to block them even if they are blocking other Tor links.

When the Android 4.0 slates were announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress, the company said both devices would arrive in U.K. stores in March ahead of a global rollout. According to a Samsung spokesman, complications with Ice Cream Sandwich caused the delay is due to Ice Cream Sandwich, which both Samsung and Google need more time to work on. This isn’t the first time Samsung has run into problems with Android 4.0. Last month the manufacturer delayed its original upgrade plan for the Galaxy Note from the...

Have you ever sat there, watching transfixed as your phone fell out of your grasp into the nearest source of water (or other liquid)? For smartphone connoisseurs that probably ranks up there with the sickening crunch that comes when your wife’s car backs over something you were sure you placed on the seat.
There’s no way to recover a phone from physical destruction, but occasionally a quick-acting individual can save their phone from a water damage death. Nokia has your back here, and has released a set of instructions for you to follow if you happen to drop a Lumia Windows Phone device into your nearest puddle (it’s probably good advice for any phone…physics doesn’t alter in the presence of...

Yamaha RX-V573 and RX-V473 receivers include AirPlay integration, 4K passthrough

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

We don't spend a whole lot of time focusing on home theater receivers 'round these parts, but we do like AirPlay, and we're especially fond of audio devices that boast compatibility with the iOS wireless streaming tool out of the box. Yamaha's RX-V573 and RX-V473 are two of the latest mid-range audio mixers to ship with AirPlay integration -- a feature lacking from the company's past offerings -- along with compatibility with the AV Controller app, available for iOS, Android and the Kindle Fire. There's also a nifty 4K video pass-through feature, which won't do you much good at present, but may go a long way to future-proofing both devices. There's not much differentiating the models, save f...

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

MetroPCS LTE data plans just got a little less confusing, but users may not be happy with the changes. The company is adding a new tier to its plans, raising the rate for unlimited LTE data (along with unlimited voice, SMS, Rhapsody music, and Video On Demand) to $70 a month. The extant $60 plan will now offer 5GB a month, slowing users' speeds when they exceed that amount. "Customers will remain on the 4G LTE network but receive a reduced speed similar to what they might experience on MetroPCS' 3G networks," a company spokesperson told FierceWireless. Users of the cheaper $40 and $50 plans, which offer 250MB and 2.5GB of data respectively, will see the same thing happen after hitting their ...
