U.S government attempts to silence Megaupload's lawyers
Like UnlikeLawyers representing the six major Hollywood studios, the United States government and Megaupload met in District Judge Liam O’Grady’s courtroom on Friday, CNET reported. The appearance pertains to digital files belonging to as many as 60 million people throughout the world that are stored on Megaupload’s 1,100 servers. The files are currently located on servers owned by Carpathia Hosting, which is now housing them at its own expense, however the company is looking to delete the information or possibly sell off the servers. Carpathia claims the cost of hosting the data is a financial burden and has asked the court for relief. The U.S. government in January arrested and charged Megaupload’s f...

A recent job listing has revealed that an Ubuntu Phone OS is currently under development. Canonical, the major developer behind the Ubuntu OS, is seeking a Business Development Manager for its Ubuntu Phone OS project that will be responsible for establishing relationships with phone vendors and telecommunications companies to promote the platform.
This isn’t the first time that Canonical has attempted to adapt Ubuntu to smartphones. It had previously tried to push Ubuntu Mobile, which ended in 2009, as well as Kubuntu Mobile and an ARM version of Ubuntu. Fans of the platform have designed several concepts for a mobile Ubuntu OS, one of which designed by Musl1m is shown above.

Google's Brin: Apple and Facebook pose huge threat to Internet freedom
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleGoogle
Google co-founder Sergey Brin said during an interview published on Sunday that Apple and Facebook pose serious threats to Internet freedom because of their closed approaches to software. While speaking with The Guardian, Brin said there are ”very powerful forces that have lined up against the open Internet on all sides and around the world. I am more worried than I have been in the past. It’s scary.” The executive pointed to the “walled-garden” philosophy that sees companies like Apple and Facebook maintain tight control over third-party software on their respective platforms as the cause for his concerns. Sony Xperia S heading to Canada
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSonyXperia S
Sony announced that the Xperia S will soon be available at its stores across Canada. Beginning April 17th, fans of the Japanese company will be able to get the unlocked device and use it on Rogers’ network. Unfortunately we don’t know the price and can only speculate how much this powerful smartphone will cost — if I had to guess, I would say it will sell for some $650.
Now that’s all cool to see Sony bringing its new smartphone(s) to Canada, but it seems they failed to reach an agreement with local carriers. Let’s face it – most people buy phones with a contract and in that sense (without a carrier deal) I doubt the Japanese giant will be able to move enough units. Moreover, although the Xp...

Microsoft wins injunction in Washington against Motorola, can keep selling stuff in Germany
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftMotorola
Microsoft's been waging legal war against Motorola on several fronts for some time now, and today, team Redmond scored a victory in a federal district court in Washington that'll have repercussions in Germany. The judge granted Microsoft's motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction that prevents Motorola from enforcing any injunction it may obtain in the parties' parallel action in Mannheim, Germany. As a quick refresher, this litigation's all about a bundle of Moto-owned standards-essential WiFi and H.264 patents. Naturally, Motorola claims that Microsoft's infringing its IP, and has sought to stop sales of infringing products in Deutschland. Meanwhile, Microsoft co...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
Nokia is going to announce their Q1 2012 financial results on April 19th, today though they issued a press release that gives investors and analysts a hint of what sort of numbers they should be expecting. Here are the important figures: 83 million mobile phones were sold during the quarter, of which 71 million were feature phones and 12 million were smartphones. Of those 12 million smartphones, 2 million of them were Windows Phones. Just yesterday we predicted Nokia would sell 2.2 million Windows Phones, so we’re proud to say we were ridiculously close. As for profits … there simply aren’t any. Nokia says their operating margin in Q1 was negative 3%. The bad news doesn’t stop there, the Fin...

F-Secure provides free Flashback removal tool for Mac users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
F-Secure has come to the aid of Apple Mac owners infected with the Flashback malware, announcing a free removal script for OS X. At its peak on April 6, an estimated 600,000 systems running OS X were said to be infected.
Apple itself has said it is already working on a tool to remove the malware, but given the company's slow turnaround of the critical updates issued by Oracle in February it would appear security firms were unwilling to wait.
The new tool by F-Secure will detect and repair the damage done by all of the common types of Flashback malware. It is offered as a free stand-alone Apple script application and not part of their antivirus scanner. Using it will reverse the damage and th...

RIM's hardware department could be losing money
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
RIM is going down quickly and the latest financials made it obvious even for the most loyal ‘Berry fans. Adding salt to the wound, a bunch of top level executives started leaving the company, and to make matters even worse now, the Canadian company’s latest regulatory filing, reveals that RIM’s hardware department is probably losing money.
For RIM’s fiscal year ending February 2012 gross margins slumped to 20%, down from 36% on a GAAP basis. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek theorizes that after accounting for operating costs and inventory charges, this results in a loss.
According to the analyst, RIM’s hardware department is in the red: -8% on a GAAP basis, -3% on a non-GAAP basis, or -4% on an...

PS Vita firmware update 1.67 available now, as well as the handheld's first free-to-play downloadable
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
The PlayStation Vita just received its first free-to-play game, a match-three puzzler called Treasures of Montezuma Blitz, and we were curious to see how it plays, but when we fired up a Vita to see just how friendly Sony's made the platform for freemium titles, we ran into a required update. Yes, Sony's updated the PlayStation Vita's firmware to version 1.67, only one week after the last, and just like version 1.66, it's a 97MB download. There's no changelog, so we're not sure what it does quite yet, but we can hazard a guess: perhaps Sony's trying to successfully release version 1.65 yet again. We've reached out to the company for details. In the meanwhile, you can hear more about Montezum...
