Facebook defends CISPA with talk of protection

Facebook defends CISPA with talk of protection

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Just like SOPA, Facebook has responded to the growing concerns rising around an internet “security” bill presented to the House of Representatives this week – only this time they’re taking the opposite stance. If you’ll recall, SOPA (and its twin PIPA) were bills that allowed the US Government to effectively shut down any website it saw illegally sharing content – this set of bills was much too broad and were relatively quickly axed amid a giant bit of outcry on the part of the greater web. Now that CISPA has arrived, Facebook is seeing things differently.

Apple CEO Tim Cook spotted at Valve offices

Apple CEO Tim Cook spotted at Valve offices

The head of Apple has reportedly been meeting with people at PC gaming giant Valve, right at a time when Valve has been the subject of rampant rumors. The company posted job ads for what appears to be a hardware initiative or at least something that sounds like a complete departure from its long-standing traditional business model. So Apple having some sort of position in that would be interesting to say the least.

Valve job listing points to potential hardware offering

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Last month, a rumor arose indicating that Valve was working on a “Steam Box” designed to rival console experiences. The company was said to be looking to use powerful PC hardware, like an Intel Core i7 and NVIDIA graphics card, and pairing it with a customized software experience. The box wouldn’t be locked down though, with Valve hoping to establish a hardware set of minimum hardware guidelines for developers. Engadget has spotted a job listing that adds further credence to the rumor, with Valve looking for an electronics engineer.

Whitespace Remover fixes new Google+ layout

Whitespace Remover fixes new Google+ layout

Filed in: Google

Google rolled out a refreshed user interface for Google+ on Wednesday, and predictably opinion seems to be split on the change. While we personally think it looks better, one thing that irks us (among other widescreen monitor users) is the large amount of wasted white space. Luckily, there’s a Chrome and Firefox extension that will remove the unnecessary void and tighten things up.
Whitespace Remover does exactly what it says on the tin. Rather than having everything shifted to the left of the screen, Whitespace Remover does away with the wasted space and centers all the Google+ elements, making for a much nicer experience on widescreen monitors. The extension also adds a gray box around con...

Nokia to announce its first manufacturing plant in Vietnam on April 23rd

Filed in: NOKIA

Over the last few months, Nokia has closed scaled back several of its Western factories and shed over 3,000 employees in a recent effort to cut costs. The Finnish handset maker will shift its manufacturing business to Asia and is planning to build a plant in Vietnam, a move that is expected to cost some $300 million according to Vietnamese news organization BaoMoi. “Shifting device assembly to Asia is targeted at improving our time to market. By working more closely with our suppliers, we believe that we will be able to introduce innovations into the market more quickly and ultimately be more competitive,” Nokia EVP of Markets Niklas Savander previously said. The company will reportedly hold...

AT&T to launch HTC One X within a week

AT&T to launch HTC One X within a week

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

We have been informed by a trusted source that HTC’s One X, one of the best smartphones ever to come out of Taiwan, will be available on AT&T as early as this week. We have also been told that AT&T may announce availability details tomorrow, and that the handset’s release should follow within five to seven days of the carrier’s announcement. AT&T’s version of the HTC One X swaps out the quad-core Tegra 3 processor for a dual-core Snapdragon CPU in order to accommodate 4G LTE connectivity, but unlike the complete redesign we saw on Sprint’s EVO 4G LTE, the AT&T version should be nearly identical to the international model.

Nokia Lumia 900 data connectivity fix available now, three days early

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Good news came late today for all those Lumia 900 owners out there. It appears that Nokia has officially released the software update to resolve the handset's data connectivity issues -- a full three days early, in fact. Users may download the software through either Zune on the PC or Windows Phone 7 Connector on the Mac. For those who'd prefer to swap out their handset at an AT&T store, you have between now and April 21st to complete the exchange. Naturally, the limited-time offer remains in place for all those who purchase a Lumia 900 before April 21st to receive a $100 credit to their AT&T phone bill, courtesy of Nokia. Quite the graceful recovery, indeed.

Google+ gets the biggest minor update ever

Google+ gets the biggest minor update ever

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

The Google+ app for Android got what appeared to be a pretty minor update today, but it is actually one of the best updates, and one that fixes an annoyance that we've had with the app since it was first launched. If you have been following our articles about the various Google+ app updates, we have frequently commented on one continuous problem: sharing links on mobile.
The option to share links has always been there, but the problem was that when you shared a link, it would post as a plain link and would not be expanded to the much more visually pretty posts that you would get if you shared the link on a desktop. That has finally been fixed, and is listed in the changelog as "improved shar...

Google reports $10.65 billion in revenue for Q1 2012, splits stock

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google just announced its earnings for Q1 of 2012 and the company did not disappoint. It raked in $10.65 billion, a full 24 percent higher than last year for the same time period and a hefty improvement over last quarter. Of that rather sizable chunk of cash, $10.2 billion came from advertising revenues -- $7.3 billion of that placed on Google's own properties. GAAP net income for the quarter was $2.89 billion, more than twice that of Q1 2011, which brings its total war chest to $49.3 billion in cash on hand. Perhaps the biggest news for investors, though, is the 2-for-1 stock split, which is a perfect accompaniment for the skyrocketing price. It's worth noting however, that this new stock i...

ICANN extends web suffix application deadline in wake of software glitch

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

ICANN's plan to allow companies to apply for new domain name suffixes has run into a bit of a snag, with a software problem forcing it to move the application deadline. Originally, the application period for the custom suffixes — such as ".theverge" — was planned to close this evening, but according to a post on its website, ICANN discovered what it describes as a "glitch" in its top-level domain application system (TLS). In response ICANN is shutting down the TLS until this Tuesday at 23:59 UTC. Accordingly, applications for custom domain suffixes will continue to be accepted until 23:59 UTC on Friday, April 20th.

The Federal Communications Commission has fined Google $25,000 for impeding a U.S. investigation into the data collection scandal surrounding its Street View project, in which the Internet giant allegedly accessed unsecured networks and collected personal information without users’ permission. The FCC said the Mountain View-based company did not cooperate with the investigation and refused to reveal the names of its engineers associated with the project. “Google refused to identify any employees or produce any e-mails. The company could not supply compliant declarations without identifying employees it preferred not to identify,” the FCC said. “Misconduct of this nature threatens to compromi...

Better Late than Never, Apple Fixes Flashback Vulnerability

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

As promised, Apple rolled out a Java update today designed to combat the Flashback infection afflicting some 600,000 Mac users.
The Java security update removes common Flashback variants and disables the auto-running of applets, which is how Flashback infiltrated systems. To ensure you're protected, simply download and apply the latest patches from Software Update.
In related news, Kaspersky announced today that the company is suspending its own Flashback removal program. Not because of Apple's official release but because Kaspersky found the tool itself was making unacceptable alterations to the system. The Flashfake Removal Tool reportedly took the liberty of changing auto-start configurat...

Apple sued by parents over in-app charges

Apple sued by parents over in-app charges

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple is being sued by parents of young Apple iPhone users who claim that the tech titan is unfairly profiting from in-app charges. While many apps are free, of course, some in-app purchases can cost hundreds of dollars. A recent study showed that the average U.S.developer is making $63,885.34 in revenue thanks to in-app purchases from Apple iPhone users, just in the first month of being listed in the App Store. The plaintiffs complain that the system makes it too easy for kids to run up huge bills without getting approval from their parents. Apple has asked for the court to throw out the case, saying that in-app purchasing can now be disabled. Judge US District Judge Edward Davila ruled tha...
