Tablet shipments up 200 percent as netbook demand tanks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Tablets
Tablet shipments soared 200 percent over the past years, according to research company Canalys, but Apple didn't ship enough iPads in Q1 to retain the No. 1 position for the most client PCs shipped. The distinction went to HP, which has bounced back from a rocky 2011, spurred in part by an improving global economy that helped push notebook shipments up by 11 percent and desktop shipments up by 8 percent.
The future of netbooks, meanwhile, doesn't look particularly bright. Shipments for that breed of computing hardware were down 34 percent year over year, marking the sixth successive quarterly decline.
"Most of the leading PC vendors have done a reasonable job of offsetting the declines in th...

The Samsung Galaxy S III Revealed: 4.8" HD SuperAMOLED, Exynos 4 Quad, Available 5/29 in Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
Apple is a bit infamous for its tight control over new products, particularly iPhones. Development mules are often updated internals stuffed into nondescript previous generation designs. And talk of new products is forbidden, until the official reveal. Samsung, seems to have taken a different tack with their latest flagship device, the Galaxy S III. In the weeks leading up to today's announcement there were positively dozens of leaked images and specifications lists. And each one seemed so pointedly different than the last to leave the tech press exhausted with confusion and anticipation. All those leaks are put to the test, now, though; as Samsung has just revealed their most advanced phone...

Microsoft breaks down Windows 8's Media Center upgrade path, Dolby codec support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Many in the Windows Media Center community were afraid that Windows 8 would mark the end of Media Center, while others thought it would be like Notepad -- present, but unchanged. In the end both were wrong as Microsoft announced Media Center would be available as an add-on to Windows 8. Until now though, we didn't know exactly how that process would work. Steven Sinofsky outlined on the Building Windows 8 blog how users will be able to use Add Features to Windows 8 in Control Panel and purchase the same great Media Center experience that was included in Windows 7 Premium and Pro. The price is still unannounced but is expect to be "in line with marginal costs" -- whatever that means. The pric...

Pirate Bay Sees Traffic Increase by 12 Million After UK Block
Like UnlikeEarlier this week the British courts ordered five UK ISPs to block access to popular file-sharing site The Pirate Bay. In a blog post published on Tuesday, the team behind The Pirate Bay dubbed western countries "the worst culprits" when it came to censorship. However, it seems someone at TBP has been talking anonymously about how the block has affected the site and this person has revealed that it has actually resulted in a massive boost in traffic for the site.
TorrentFreak quotes a TPB insider as saying news of the ruling would only serve as "free advertising" and this insider seems to have hit the nail on the head. The Pirate Bay has apparently seen a massive surge in visitors, proving t...

Logitech president celebrates end-of-year earnings with management cull
Like UnlikeFiled in: Logitech
Logitech's Q4 and full-year report makes for uncomfortable reading. Despite profits increasing by a factor of nine in the last quarter of the year, overall annual profit fell 44 percent from $143 million to $71 million. The company has already parachuted in former Whirlpool exec. Bracken P. Darrel to turn things around and recover the losses made when the company went big on Google TV. His first action has been to kick-start a restructuring operation that will save $80 million in costs, starting by cutting a whole management layer -- demoting current product VP Junien Labrousse and firing sales VP Werner Heid. Mr. Darrell is now working directly with his team on a new lineup of "stronger" pr...
