Microsoft Detects New Malware Attacking Mac OS X

Jeong Wook Oh of Microsoft's Malware Protection Center reports that his team has stumbled across a new piece of malware targeting Apple OS X computers. It exploits a remote code execution vulnerability in the Office productivity suite which Microsoft actually patched back in June 2009 (MS09-027). Almost three years later, not all machines have the patch installed, thus leading to the spread of this new hacker tool.

Your contacts data to be safer with OS X Mountain Lion

Your contacts data to be safer with OS X Mountain Lion

Apple has released a new version of its OS X Mountain Lion developer preview, which adds a new feature that helps protect a user's contacts book from apps on the computer.
The OS now asks users to grant permission to apps that want to access their contacts book - be it an email client, Skype or some other service. They won't do so until the user says "yes" to data being shared with a third party.
The move has presumably been made in response to the debacle Apple has experienced with iOS apps, such as Path on the iPhone. It, and others, have been raiding iPhone users' address books to then market to a third party.

OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

Apple stated Friday that the launch of OS X Mountain Lion would be truly download-only. The Mac maker briefed Pocket-lint that it wouldn't stock versions preloaded on USB drives like it has with the current Lion release. Offering a physical option was an "interesting test," but the Mac App Store was "just fine" in practice for getting a copy, Apple said.
Not mentioned was whether or not users could still create their own disk image and load that on a USB drive or a disc. The options were never official and will likely still be an option given that the Lion installer was ultimately a package with a typical install image inside.

Mountain Lion ditches older Macs

Apple Mountain Lion will force many Mac models into legacy status, with no support for the upcoming OS X refresh for numerous pre-2007 MacBooks, MacBook Pros and desktops. The minimum hardware requirements of Mountain Lion - which we previewed comprehensively yesterday - apparently count out multiple models using integrated Intel GPUs, so TUAW‘s developer source says. That means, if you have a pre-unibody MacBook or the original MacBook Air, there’s no Mountain Lion for you.
Those notebooks using Intel GMA 950 or Intel GMA X3100 GPUs are apparently out of luck, but the list also includes the 8-core Mac Pro from 2007 and the mid-2007 Mac mini. However, if you have one of the following models ...
