Adobe's famous desktop browser plugin may be looking forward to a 2013 overhaul, but that doesn't mean it isn't out to improve itself in the here and now. Flash Player's 11.3 beta, for instance, rolls in low latency audio support through NetStream, designed specifically to cut back audio lag in cloud gaming. The beta also introduces support for complete keyboard control when in full-screen mode, background Flash updating on Macs, and a Protected Mode for Firefox that keeps rogue Flash files from compromising Windows PCs using Vista or later.
The AIR 3.3 beta, on the other hand, smooths the runtime's iOS experience, allowing compiled apps to run in the background more like their natively-comp...

Microsoft has hired 14 Yahoo researchers for its brand new New York research lab, AllThingsD reported. The hires come after Yahoo made significant layoffs last month to its research and development unit. According to Jennifer Chayes, who manages Microsoft Research in New England and New York, the researchers were’t hired as a package deal. “I don’t feel like we hired a group; I feel like we hired 15 amazing individuals, some of which became available because there were some problems at Yahoo,” she said. The software giant has an extensive research division that includes some 850 Ph.Ds, and the New York City lab will be the company’s 13th global office.

In what’s easily the highest-profile patent case so far this year, the jury is narrowing down its information while it prepares for a verdict. Judge Rules You Can't Be (Definitively) Identified by Your IP Address

Judge Rules You Can't Be (Definitively) Identified by Your IP Address

Posted on May 04, 2012 by MG1

Common sense dictates that an IP address is just a number associated with a connection, and not a human being. Copyright crusaders aren't exactly known for loads of common sense and rationality. Thankfully, a New York judge has ruled that an IP address alone is not enough to pin illegal downloads on a specific person.
The ruling comes in the context of mass torrent lawsuits that just dump thousands of IP addresses into the court and charge everyone associated with them. Cases like the Hurt Locker suit filed against 5,000 people for downloading the movie. Judge Gary Brown's ruling isn't the first to point out that these cases are idiotic, since there is no practical way to efficiently tie tha...

How Scientists Plan to Stop Nasty Side-Channel Attacks

How Scientists Plan to Stop Nasty Side-Channel Attacks

Posted on May 04, 2012 by MG1

Shafi Goldwasser at MIT and Guy Rothblum at Microsoft Research are proposing a technique that could alleviate the threat of such attacks, which often rely on an attacker being able to listen to the "noise" of computer processes. Side-channel attacks are frequently timing storage transactions and are measuring the power use of a systems to make conclusions of a system's activity and ultimately open a door to critical data.
According to Goldwasser and Rothblum, such an attack would only require a piece of code loaded on a cloud server, which could eavesdrop on the activity of applications. A side-channel attack is still a very sophisticated attack in secure server environments, as it would req...
