BlackBerry Curve 9380 hits the FCC, talking the T-Mobile talk

BlackBerry Curve 9380 hits the FCC, talking the T-Mobile talk

Posted on Nov 25, 2011 by MG1

RIM's first all-screen Curve has sashayed over to the FCC. Two models of the BlackBerry Curve 9380, the REA70UW and REB70UW, are included in the latest filing, which goes into typical laborious detail on radio frequencies and the like. Thankfully, those myriad charts and graphs reveal support for WCDMA band IV, meaning that the phone plays nice with T-Mobile's 3G network. Let's just hope that, if given the chance to strut its stuff in the US market, it follows the Curve family tradition of arriving keenly priced. We'll have to wait and see if it hits our wallet's sweet spot, but for those more interested in the phone's internals, the source link beckons below.

November DDoS attack the largest of the year, says Prolexic

Posted on Nov 25, 2011 by MG1

Information technology and services company Prolexic says it recently helped mitigate the largest DDoS attack of 2011 thus far, seeing bandwidth peaks as high as 45Gbps during the week-long ordeal. Stretching from November 5th through the 12th, the attack saw an Asia-based e-commerce company hit with packet volumes three times that of any event this year — 69 million packets per second at its worst — with the globally-coordinated incident using traffic primarily originating from China. While sabotage by competitors or frustrated employees are possible motives, Prolexic cites particular concern for online retailers during the coming holiday season. The company has seen e-commerce transactions...

Google has announced that it is getting rid of seven more services as part of an 'off-season' spring clean, with Google Wave to become a read-only site as of January 2012.
The complete closure of Google Wave should come as no surprise as Google had stopped development on the social-network experiment over a year ago, but now it is stopping users being able to create new Waves. The complete closure of the site is set for April 2012.
Say hello…
Wave isn't the only service shutting up shop – Google revealed on its blog that there are seven services in all to close and has given reasons behind each closure.
It is clear why it is getting rid of some – Google Friend Connect is to merge into Google...

Google Expands Auto-Complete Blacklist

Google Expands Auto-Complete Blacklist

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

It’s been a while, so you could be forgiven for letting it slip your mind, but Google is in the habit of censoring its auto-complete suggestions. Starting almost a year ago El Goog began removing suggestions for content relating to search terms like torrent, bittorrent, and RapidShare. According to TorrentFreak, a recent update to Google’s search tools has expanded the auto-complete blackout to include the names of file sharing websites.
Users that enter searches including terms like pirate bay, isohunt, and btmon are finding their searches pull up no suggestions. It’s just a few extra keystrokes, so what’s the harm? Statistics have shown that limiting auto-complete results negatively affect...

Feds deny hacking caused Illinois water pump failure

Feds deny hacking caused Illinois water pump failure

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Did a hacker or group of hackers, possibly in Russia, manage to physically destroy a water pump in Springfield, Illinois? That was the word last week, when reports spread that hackers had managed to take control of the water plant's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (or SCADA), which gave them the ability to repeatedly turn the pump on and off and eventually burn it out. Now, however, both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security say that their investigations have found no evidence of hacking or malicious activity, and that earlier reports were based on "raw, unconfirmed data." As you might expect, that explanation isn't quite being accepted by everyone, including Joe We...

A seven-page thread on the Nokia Support forum details battery life issues that many have had with the new Windows Phone handset, which has prompted Nokia into action. The company has today announced it'll deliver two software updates, one in early December and one in early January, both of which will aim to improve power efficiency and battery life. SOPA loses backing of tech giants amid policy concerns

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

After initially backing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the Business Software Alliance (BSA), which counts the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Intel, Dell, Symantec and 23 other tech companies among its members, has withdrawn their support saying that valid and important questions concerning the bill have been raised and need answers.
In a statement released on Monday evening, BSA president and CEO Robert Holleyman said the alliance agreed with the basic goals but wanted a House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether the hotly debated and controversial legislation will cause unintended consequences.

Barnes & Noble is celebrating Black Friday with a white border. The bookstore chain is offering up a limited edition of its excellent Nook Simple Touch reader this Friday, November 25th. Slight aesthetic differences aside, the real news here is the price -- the company is knocking $20 off the already low-cost device, making it the same as Amazon's ad-supported, touchscreen-free fourth gen Kindle. The $79 deal will only last one day, so get 'em while the e-ink is hot. Press info after the jump.

PlayStation Vita sends out its first tweet, keeps it meta

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Sony's PlayStation Europe team couldn't restrain themselves this morning, sending out a tweet from an actual PS Vita console. It's the first one out in the Twitterverse, as far as they're aware, though its content isn't the most exciting in the world. It's about as self-descriptive as the Arnold Schwarzenegger DVD commentary for Total Recall:
As far as we're aware, this is the first tweet sent via PlayStation Vita.
Perhaps the Vita is just building up steam and its second and third efforts will be superb RT candidates. Still, it's good to see its social aspects getting tested out, though there's one added curiosity to this particular tweet. It's listed as coming "via monologo," a Twitter cli...

Doom 3 source code available now, gory customizations welcomed

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Doom for everyone. It's not a particularly festive message, but as promised earlier this month, the Doom 3 source code is now out on a general public license. Programming types can meddle with the game's inner workings as wintery temperatures force them to huddle close to the warm hum of excessive gaming rigs. Doom dad John Carmack announced the release to his horde of Twitter followers, while doffing his cap to Timothee Besset, who helped sidestep some shadow rendering license issues that had dogged an earlier release. Peer into the source code at the link below, and know the true face of despair Doom.

Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year and Amazon is definitely going to be a part of it. It’s not just its physical goods though, as the company will also be discounting high-profile apps in its Amazon App Store.
The Amazon App Store will be offering apps up to 50 percent off and this should be available for multiple Android devices (just check the “unknown sources” box in the setting) as well as the just-released Kindle Fire. The deal will start at 12:00 a.m. PT on Friday and run through “Cyber Monday” and it includes:

iPhone 4S is already second most popular cameraphone on Flickr

iPhone 4S is already second most popular cameraphone on Flickr

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Six weeks after it hit the market, iPhone 4S has quickly risen to fame on Flickr. It’s now the second-most popular cameraphone on the photo-sharing site. The iPhone 4 reigns as the top cameraphone for now, but it’s safe to assume the iPhone 4S will take over eventually. The iPhone 4 is also the most popular camera overall, so that means the iPhone 4S would claim that title as well.
I don’t think the folks at Apple are losing too much sleep about the competition, though. The third most popular cameraphone on Flickr is the iPhone 3G from 2008 and behind that is the now-free iPhone 3GS. The only non-Apple product that made the top tier of cameraphones is the HTC Evo 4G, which is steadily mainta...

According to Bloomberg, today HTC issued a statement saying that it has cuts its revenue forecasts for the Q4 2011 fiscal period. The company's prior forecast had called for revenue in the $4.12 billion to $4.45 billion range, but that now it is expecting the figure to come in at the same level as Q4 of 2010: $3.4 billion. That equates to somewhere in the neighborhood of a 20 percent reduction.
The company's sales are expected to slow down, quarter over quarter, for the first time in nearly two years. The company cites the economic downturn and increased competition as the reason for the change in expectations.

Amazon may move 12 million Kindle Fire tablets in 2012

Amazon may move 12 million Kindle Fire tablets in 2012

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

We like the Kindle Fire’s odds, and we revealed as much in our review of Amazon’s new tablet published on Tuesday. Analysts have been betting on the Fire as well, with shipment estimates reaching as high as 5 million units for the fourth quarter alone. As detailed in a recent note to investors, Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney sees Amazon’s success in the tablet market spilling into the new year, with sales of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets reaching 12 million units for the full year in 2012. Increasing competition and falling prices could make 12 million tablets a tall order, but if Amazon can pull it off, it will manage to acquire 15% of the tablet market and roughly $3.2 billion in revenue th...
